Re: [slim] Should I Buy a Harmony Remote

2012-10-16 Thread Soulkeeper

The lastest software update made my Harmony 600 practically useless.

As I've had the exact same problem before, I contacted support by
replying to the mail from Logitech where they had told me that the
problem was fixed last time. Soon after, Logitech support told me that
I'd contacted the wrong department. Quite interesting in itself.
Anyway, they promised that the right department would contact me
promptly, to get the problem fixed. This was maybe two weeks ago. Then:
Crickets.

I sent a reminder. More crickets.

I sent one more. Even more crickets.

It's not long now, before my Harmony goes in the bin.

Would I recommend that you buy a harmony? Short answer:
* N O . *

It can also be a simple mechanical failure in the plug, so don't toss it

[slim] Product idea

2012-04-17 Thread Soulkeeper

This night I dreamt that I was browsing a second-hand shop, and I found
a SB Radio as big as an old-fashioned 17 CRT monitor. The shop owner
told me it was some obscure limited edition product, but it didn't cost
me much second-hand.

It looked and worked like a SB Radio; same design, same buttons, same
screen (maybe a bit bigger than the normal one), but the unit as a whole
was huge. I remember being overjoyed and wondering how it would sound
when I got it home to plug it in.

So there's my idea for the next-gen SB: A Big Baby, seven kilos of raw
power with a 12 bass driver and enough watts to shake the house. :D

(And how about a battery apartment for a 12 V lead-acid car battery, in
case you want to take it to the park?)

The issue is purely academic. The data is not being corrupted. And EMI
is not only properly suppressed in the Ethernet standard, it can also
easily be eliminated altogether (by using wireless).

Re: [slim] For sound quality, how important is the computer that connects to Touch?

2012-04-11 Thread Soulkeeper

There are two conceivable ways in which the computer can affect sound
quality. In tha vast majority of cases, both are negligible.

The ethernet cable can transmit noise, but ethernet is designed not to
do that. Anyway, a switch or other component between the computer and
the Squeezebox would isolate the SB further from the computer. Using
wireless would eliminate that potential problem altogether.

The power supply unit of the PC may be bad and noisy, and inject noise
into the mains. This could be picked up by the amp or other analog
component in the analog sound signal chain. But your house is probably
full of electronic equimpent with the potential to do the same thing, so
it doesn't necessarily make sense to focus especially on the PC in this
regard.

You'll probably gain much more, with a lot less effort, by focusing on
the acoustic properties of the room, and your speakers. And/or consider
digital room correction.

A small but probably important detail that I forgot: After installing
Greasemonkey in Firefox (and restarting Firefox), paste the script into

[slim] How to hide forum threads

2012-03-26 Thread Soulkeeper

I found a Greasemonkey script 'on this page'
and made a single modification (the @include parameter) to make it work
on forums.slimdevices.com.

With this script, every forum thread comes with a Ignore link, so if
it annoys you, you can simply hide it, and it won't come back. (As a
bonus, you can now also hide all those sticky threads that fill up the
top of each subforum, and that you never read anyway.)

Unfortunately, the thread will still show on the index.php page, but
when you enter the subforum itself, the script kicks in.

The script runs in Greasemonkey which in turn runs in Firefox. If you
have several computers (or Firefox user profiles), you'll need to
install the script on each one.

passive speakers in order to get better (or equivalent) sound?

cheated a week later when Touch 2 hits the stores.

He'll just have to gamble. Logitech never announce new products in
advance. In fact, they're pretty good at keeping it secret.

So either he buys a Touch, or he doesn't. There's really not much more

Re: [slim] Dear Squeezebox, still love you

2012-03-02 Thread Soulkeeper

The moment I saw a SB3 at a friend's place, in 2009, I knew that this
was it. This was the solution that I dreamt about in the 1990s, but
eventually pushed to the back of my mind because I thought nobody else
was interested, and that it wouldn't become a reality in my lifetime.

I was astounded by the elegance of the UI, how well engineered the
whole thing was, and that it wasn't a cheapo low-end plastic gizmo from
Hong Kong, and that it wasn't an unreasonably expensive steel brick
weighing 20 pounds. Small, elegant, and there it sat between two
Magnepans, sounding great. I was sold.

I had a hard time figuring out what model to buy, what suited my needs.
The marketing information was confusing as heck. It was almost like
Logitech wanted to dazzle potential customers until they gave up. But
my mind was made up. I ended up with a Duet, pretty much at random. I
figured that as long as it didn't have speakers, it would probably suit
my needs. Which was about right. The Controller, despite all its awkward
neither-fish-nor-fowl-ness, melted my heart with its undocumented geek
port and IR transmitter. I played around with using it as a second
player instead of a remote, but never found a comfortable use for it.

Then I found a second hand Boom for $180. So I sold sold my Tivoli
model 3 bedside radio for $180, and put the boom in its place. The
sound quality was superior, and now I could wake up to my own music
instead of irritating garbage pop on the radio. Plus, I suddenly had a
wealth of radio stations to choose from, some of them actually not that
bad. And I could leave the Controller in the cradle, to serve its
intended purpose for pausing and changing volume, and to be available
when my SO or guests wanted to browse my music collection.

Two Radios and a Touch later, and the house is full of music. I sort of
want one more Touch for my headphone setup at the office, but my USB
soundcard is more practical when I'm sitting by the computer anyway, so
I can't allow myself that expense. Since there's no room for more
squeezeboxes in my life atm, I'm content with evangelizing to my
friends. I'm certain that I'm starting to drive some of them crazy by
now. ;)

Re: [slim] (Non-touch) Squeezebox with larger color display or video out

You can probably get a second hand 15 LCD monitor for less than $100,
maybe less than $25. If you connect that to a cigarette pack sized mini
computer, and run the web interface on it (at your desired zoom level),
or SqueezePlay, would that perhaps fit your need?

Re: [slim] SB3 : 24/96 capable?

2012-02-23 Thread Soulkeeper

The SB3's DAC can do max 24/48, and I suspect this also applies to the
digital out. SC/SBS/LMS will transparently transcode 24/96 files to
24/48 via SoX when playing them on your SB3.

So if you want the benefits of 24/96, you'll probably need a Touch,
with or without a DAC.

That being said, will you be able to hear the difference between a
24/96 track, and the same track properly downsampled to 24/48? Whether
that is humanly possible, is disputed. AFAIU, nobody has yet been able
to do so in a double blind test.

Anyway, it's probably more cost effective to spend the money on speaker
upgrades, or room treatment.

I can recommend Linksys/Cisco E3000, E2000, and E1000, even WRT54GL if

Personally, I install 'DD-WRT' (http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index) on

You can use the Touch as a transport, while keeping your Classic for the
display. Simply set up the Classic to control the Touch (if possible,
and if that's not possible, sync it with the Touch).

So the music will come from the Touch, while the Classic will display
what's playing just like it always has.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android

2011-12-14 Thread Soulkeeper

That's comparing apples and oranges. They're completely different apps,
made for completely different purposes.

But it could be exciting to check out if it's possible, and what could
potentially be achieved by, implementing some kind of integration
between the two.

When it comes to looks, SB3 is the champion of the Squeezeboxen so far.
I hope a next generation Touch will arrive, looking more like the SB3.

With some aluminium on front, a glass-like screen much broader than 4:3

Re: [slim] Squeezeboxen connecting via external IP address

2011-12-02 Thread Soulkeeper

It seems the data is routed to your modem and back again, but as long as
your modem does its job, it shouldn't be a bottleneck. Just a bit more
traffic on the Ethernet cable connecting the router to your LAN, and a
bit more CPU and memory load on the router. The cable (WAN) connection
probably isn't involved at all.

You could try disabling loopback (or something like that) on you
router. Most routers have this option disabled by default, as some sort
of security feature.

She uses the kitchen Boom for listening to radio, though. Mainly using

chance getting her to use it.

Re: [slim] How to stay in touch with SB dev/evolutions ?

It would be nice with a community news site. Perhaps the easiest way
would be to 'set up a wiki page'
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php?title=Squeezebox_News)? That
would probably maximize the number of contributors, without spreading
the community effort over more different web sites than necessary.
Linking to existing wiki articles will be a breeze.

If people think this is a good way of doing it, the news related pages
will get 'their own category'
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php?title=Category:News) too.

Yes, that's what I've heard.

You might want to spend $40 on a multimeter. That way you can measure
the voltage from the PSU while under load.

Open the SB3, remove the WiFi card, and power the SB3 up. If it boots,
it's the WiFi card, problem solved. If it doesn't boot, you can proceed
to measure the voltage on the inside of the power intake.

Re: [slim] Display Size

2011-08-16 Thread Soulkeeper

'Squeezebox Controller'
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Squeezebox_Controller) is a
hardware WiFi remote for the Squeezeboxes. But since you have an
Android phone, you should check out some apps that do the same job:

1) Logitech's official *'Squeezebox Controller app'
(which is free, and yes, the name is confusingly similar to the SB
Controller).

2) Flattermann's *'Squeeze Commander'
(http://www.squeezecommander.com/)* app (it costs a few bucks but is
worth every cent and more).

I'm seriously interested to hear why people select Squeezebox over Sonos

I can remember a small insight in what convinced me:

* I was introduced to the Squeezebox family 'first'

an effect.
* I know networking well enough to want my music system to utilize my
existing network instead of competing with it. AFAIU, Sonos uses the
2.4 GHz band. With SB, I can either use Ethernet (I don't even know if
Sonos supports wired networking), or my existing 802.11 network which I
know how to troubleshoot.
* I learned that SBS was open source (and that the Controller even got
a geek port). That was when I made the decision to go for SB.

So I'm not the average user, but then again, who is? (That is a
question I should probably ask Steve Jobs instead.)

Re: [slim] Thinking about switching to Sonos (for a Restaurant)

2011-08-03 Thread Soulkeeper

You should probably run a stable 7.5 version, since it's a restaurant
and not your private setting.

The sync problems sound like a network issue. Did you terminate the
cables yourself? If so, how experienced are you with stretching
Ethernet?

On the wireless side, have you scanned for hidden networks that use
channel 11? Do the squeezeboxen have line of sight to the router?
(walls and other obstacles are slightly less transparent for the signal
when using the higher channels)

Re: [slim] Baby Monitor impacting wireless network?

2011-06-20 Thread Soulkeeper

It is also possible to get a baby monitor that utilizes your 802.11
network instead of waging war against it, but this seems to be a niche
product and may be difficult to find.

However, there are plenty of 802.11 webcams (e.g. security cam) with
built-in microphones on the market. I believe this will give you
similar functionality that is 802.11 friendly.

With a little bit of tweaking/hacking, you might even be able to play
the audio stream through your Squeezebox.

No, just power cycle your Touch and you should be OK.

You can also run two servers at the same time, switching from one to

settings. The option is called Choose library or Choose server or
something like that.
