[slim] Best alternative to iTunes

2011-06-02 Thread tobesetc

I feel like the new boy at AA who says My name is TobesEtc I am an
alcoholic... but here goes:

I've finally got fed up with Apple. iTunes has been a pain in the butt
for as long as I remember. I've now lost my iPod Touch (which I used in
the car) and have replaced it with my new phone. That's now integrated
into the car. I've got Duets all over the house (ok, I've got three).

I'm thinking that maybe I should delete all my Apple Lossless files and
re-rip them. If I'm going to do that I might as well start right from
stratch.

Should I use Windows Media Player? Should I try something else? What
format should I go to? Advice please.

You don't need to rerip anything, that is the main benefit of lossless
files.

Go and buy a copy of http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

That will make transcoding the Apple lossless files to FLAC for you.
And it is also the best Windows ripper for ripping future CDs.

I prefer FLAC as the format.

In regards of players there are many alternatives:
- MusicBee
- MediaMonkey
- Foobar2000
- Winamp
- ...

and since you have SBS running there is also Squeezeplay

Consider MediaMonkey as it syncs to quite a few mobile phones including
Android devices.

You could easily write a script using the info here:

http://www.ziva-vatra.com/index.php?aid=22id=U29mdHdhcmU=

http://aidanjm.wordpress.com/2007/02/04/converthttp://aidanjm.wordpress.com/2007/02/04/converting-monkey%E2%80%99s-audio-ape-files-to-flac-in-ubuntu/ing-monkey%E2%80%99s-audio-ape-files-to-flac-in-ubuntu/

Edit: For a player I'd use J.R. Media Center on Windows.
