Re: [slim] Where to buy in Canada

2007-11-28 Thread nicketynick

Just noticed that the Where to buy page has been updated to include
Canada (may be a work in progress as I write this?)
http://www.slimdevices.com/au_resellers.html

Anyway, so far the old SD retailers are notably absent, and the
Audiotronic shops don't seem to have shown up yet either! (Ontario
anyway) I sure hope the Audiotronics ad wasn't a 'mistake'!

One would hope that Logitech isn't going to be so crude as to just
kick out the previous retailers. But in a thread somewhere one of the
SD guys, when asked why the Where to Buy tab was empty, indicated
that it was all in Logitech's hands, so I imagine that they are
running through an exercise to come up with new distribution
agreements, etc, so there may be some retailers who fall out at the
 end of it all.
I'm just interested to see it getting into some broader retail
channels, so that, for example, Xmas shoppers in this backward burg
of Kingston might actually see a demo.

Logitech marketing channels are taking things over. The appearance in
the Audiotronic flyer is the first I've seen of the Logitech
Squeezebox, and to my way of thinking, its an excellent move. Retail
stores in lots of markets, mid-fi to hi-fi range, so one can pick up
whatever else is needed out of a somewhat decent range of product
(better than anything in BB or FutureShop, anyway). If Audiotronic gets
some nice demos set up, I'm sure that a reasonable number would get sold
as Xmas gifts, just because they seem like a cool thing to have!

Re: [slim] Where to buy in Canada

2007-11-25 Thread Paul Colley
Umm, I'm not the poster you're responding to, but my experience with UPS has
been absolutely horrible. No other shipper ever causes me problem (well,
Canada Post has misdirected two items in 30 years, not bad for somebody who
delivers five addressed items to me per business day).

UPS has taken more than three months to deliver an item, has run over an
item with a truck, has delivered my package to a random address in a
different city, has tried to collect COD on item which was paid for,
declared a computer printer leather goods to customs (leather has a high
duty; computer equipment, none), and I found a $600 package of books left at
the curb at the end of my dirveway, in the rain. They also delivered
somebody else's package to my house once.

Even when everything goes right, UPS is generally slower than Canada Post.

These are my personal experiences, out of less than 20 deliveries UPS has
made to me.

UPS Canada might not be Satan, but they are the most horribly incompetent
company I have ever dealt with.I really have no use for a courier
company which loses out to Canada Post in every category.

I don't generally find it necessary to pay $70 to avoid UPS; you can almost
always find a competitor willing to use the post office (cheaper, faster,
and incredibly more reliable than UPS). For my Squeezebox, Kawartha sent
it to me by Canada Post, no problem.

They did that to me too, and the part I had shipped was only worth $35!
My original SliMP3 showed up at the door with a guy in Brown asking for
$107 before he could hand it over. Luckily my wife had that kind of
cash on her (oddly, the guy was only set up to take cash...you'd think
they'd warn you). Part of the blame goes back to the shipper, however,
as these costs can be greatly reduced with the proper paperwork.
SqueezeBoxes don't get hit with fees like that any more.

I actually prefer that. Fedex and Purolator are both 10 minutes away
at the airport but UPS seems to prefer being 40 minutes away so I
always have them ship to my work so that I don't have to make the
trip.

Satan would be a bit much. If you have seen Reaper then you know Satan
can actually be funny. I understand that UPS has good pricing from the
US. They certainly have impressive market share, but there is probably
a reason my company only ships with Fedex, DHL or intercity locals.

Ordered two SB3 last year. The trick on light items such as a SB3=
Expedited service, goes air versus ground, no brokerage fee. So, for
$35, it was shipped to my door some 30 hours after I placed my phone
call. The only thing I had to pay UPS was GST (no PST in Alberta). I
have other examples where I ordered a receiver from a store in NY, 2
days expedite service, $35 no brokerage fee. Never ever use ground
service. I got dinged once, $55 clearance fee for a $100 product. Never
again

I guess my point was the SB3 is finally available in a mid-fi A/V retail
shop with a large presence in Canada (27 stores in 27 cities/towns in
Ontario, anyway). It would make sense that they would be setting up
some nice demos so people can see what the SB3 (or Transporter in some
shops I'll bet) can do, which should facilitate some cross-selling as
well. This should begin to provide the kind of market visibility to
get SB3 into the mainstream - prepare for the onslaught!
And it's true, when all paid for, it would only be a few more $$ than
direct-order, and its worth it to me to avoid the hassle of dealing
with UPS! (YMMV, etc) I've never had any trouble with any courier as a
corporate client (that's who they set up to serve), but as Joe
Consumer, not one of them has been any good to me. (but now we're OT)
