Re: [slim] What functionality will I lose when mysb.com is eventually turned off?

2013-12-30 Thread jimbobvfr400

Good summary.
I'd also add Michael Hergers truely excellent Music and Album
Information plugin requires 7.8 for a lot of its functionality. For me
at least this was almost enough to make the upgrade worthwhile.

[slim] What functionality will I lose when mysb.com is eventually turned off?

2013-12-29 Thread RonDMC

When Logitech eventually flips the switch on mysqueezebox.com what will
it break and what will keep working? Initially will the only thing I
will be able to do is stream local music? Will all radio, plugins
(spotify) etc stop working?

I am running LMS on my server but no exactly sure how much dependence
LMS has on mysb.com. My current source is My Music whihc is obviously
local but have always run LMS and never really thought about the impact
can you guys enlighten me?

Internet radio provided by TuneIn will continue to work as long as you
upgrade to the 7.8 beta release of LMS (it won't work in 7.7 and earlier
releases of LMS).
Third party plugins installed in LMS will continue to work, for example
Triode's Spotify plugin, Bandcamp plugin and Qobuz plugin.
Most online services provided by Logitech, like Rhapsody, Pandora, WiMP
and others will not work.
The Squeezebox Touch/Radio uses mysqueezebox.com for artwork rescaling
when listening to online services and internet radio, this will stop
working when mysqueezebox.com is shutdown but the latest 7.8 beta
release of LMS have a built-in artwork scaler so it would probably be
fairly easy to switch the Radio/Touch firmware to use that instead.

There are work going on in the community, for example in the ickStream
project, with the intention to add support for more online services
without dependency to mysqueezebox.com.

At the moment there are no indications that Logitech is about to
shutdown mysqueezebox.com and the best way to guarantee that they will
keep it running is to continue using functionality that depends on
mysqueezebox.com.

2013-12-29 Thread RonDMC

Thanks for the thorough reply, very informative and I'm sure there's
lots of people out there still running Squeezeboxes but are unaware of
what will happen when Logitech turn things off.

I'm currently running 7.7.3 is 7.8 being developed by Logitech or is it
community based? Is it recommended I moved to 7.8 now or wait until
things stop working? Everything is working great for me at the moment so
I am reluctant to change anything.

It's community based in the perspective that Logitech management has
very small interests in what gets included.
It's developed by Logitech based on the perspective that the person
providing most additions is currently employed by Logitech, working on
it when he isn't occupied with other stuff their management wants him to
do.
It has previously been said that 7.8 will never be officially released
by Logitech, so it will either be a beta forever or the community will
eventually decide to take over completely and make an official release.

No big reason to switch in my opinion if you are satisfied with the
current setup.

There are some new features in the 7.8 beta, information from the
changelog:

- New Features:

  - Re-implement Podcast plugin to support all players. Allow resuming
a podcast you partially
listened to before.

  - Modify Internet Radio integration to work independently from
mysb.com if needed.

  - Add new scanner step to discover new/changed/removed standalone
artwork for album covers.

  - A new generic image resizing proxy is now built in to LMS. It can
be used instead of the
image proxy hosted on mysqueezebox.com, or independently by
plugins to eg. resize artwork
local to your network (and therefore not reachable by the remote
proxy).

  - The default behaviour on power-on is changed to resume what was
playing before power-off.
This change will only apply to new players attached to the
server;
the behaviour for existing players can be changed with Settings
/
Player / Audio.

  - Support for Ogg FLAC in the server and Squeezeplay-based players

  - Added support for setting alarm playlist shuffle mode (thanks
hickinbottoms!)

  - Volume adjustment for Internet Radio (feature request '#2431'

  - Allow clients to register artwork resizing specifications to be
pre-cached during the media scan.

  - Add Triode LocalFile 'loc' ProtocolHandler support for
squeezelite.

- Platform Support:

  - Perl 5.18 modules for Linux x86_64 systems have been added.

  - Improved compatibility with latest Perl 5.18 changes.

- Bug Fixes:

  - '#8180' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8180) -
Squeezecenter prevents user logout after restart

  - '#17174' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17174) -
Title info doesn't update correctly when multiple SBs are playing
same station

  - '#17634' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17634) -
Random art represents an album as cover art, if there is track art
available

  - '#17729' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17729) - On
Linux SBS 7.4.1 and above: service cannot be stopped or restarted
after an 'internal' restart

  - '#17758' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17758) - Pop
up symbols linger too long on the screen

  - '#17920' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17920) -
TuneIn Radio Options Context Menu - Results returned are
unnecessarily limited and frequently 'not available'

  - '#17933' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17933) -
Failure to parse m3u playlists with relative paths

  - '#17937' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17937) - Now
Playing information can alternate between station and current-track
titles at track skip

  - '#17950' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17950) - %w
macros (stream seconds duration) returns negative value

- Other:

  - Recognise Fedora as being a Red Hat system.

  - Improve Perl 5.16 compatibility to silence some warnings.

  - Don't enforce PNG when showing full size artwork, but only when
resizing is requested. Converting a large JPG would result in a huge
PNG

  - Don't deal with photo and/or video folders if the UPnP plugin has
been disabled.
