I'd rather they look into MusicIP, since that's the real value-add for
me.

Actually I thought about this very issue, before I jumped in all the
way to the Squeeze universe. I really wanted it to work with UPNP, but
eventually moved over to all Squeeze devices and I haven't looked
back.

I was less concerned about it in the Slimserver 6.x days since you
didn't need a squeezecenter login just to run it like you do now, and
most my devices are dependent on the 7.2 or newer.

Has anyone run Squeezecenter on a machine that has no public net access
for a while?

I assume you mean SqueezeNetwork, and no you don't need a SN login to
run SC. It's only needed for services (such as Pandora, Rhapsody, etc)
which are provided by SN.

My main concern is that I'd be able to continue to use the hardware and
software to access my local files, internet radio and last.fm
services..

As things stand at the moment that would appear possible even if
Logitec went tits up.

SqueezeNetwork means very little to me if it didn't I be more
worried

Yes. I have a Ubuntu Server that runs SC 7.3.2 that only feeds my
Transporter. There is no router, no Cable Modem, no Wifi, just a CAT5
cable from the Ethernet port on the Server to the Transporter.

It is used in my main system only. I help out with the Beta SC Software
Testing and run my other Squeezeboxes off my SC 7.4.x Beta Windows XP
box which is part of my WiFi Network.

SN is required for use of Live365, ShoutCast, and RadioIO from the SC7
menus as well.
Though I suppose those are a form of services also.

RadioIO is available via SC7 menus without a SN account but only via
Music Internet Only RadioIO, however these are all only 64k feeds.
The SC7 RadioIO menu item itself (SN required) is all the 128k feeds.

All ShoutCast and 128k RadioIO feeds will work fine if you Cut Paste
the URL's from an outside source, you just can't access them from the
main SC7 menu structure without a SN account.

Hi

I never really considered this whilst accumulating my Duet 2 Booms.

But what would happen if Logitech / Squeezebox went bust disappeared
?

Would we be left with bits of silent hi-tech furniture ?

I guess SC would still work so you could still access music this way -
but if SN ceased to exist then PCless music would go as well wouldn't
it ?

Something to be said for a good old fashioned hifi ...

Well, there are plenty of radio stations out there. You can access them
directly over the net.

I got my Squeezebox, Duet etc to allow me to store my CDs etc on hard
disk, so that I could access play them back via my home network.
Squeezenetwork did not come into it.

Keep smiling, The Squeezebox does the business.

Re: [slim] What happens if Logitech go tits up ?

2009-03-18 Thread slimpy

All SB players need to be connected to some server.
This can either be your local SqueezeCenter or SqueezeNetwork (which is
a customized version of SC, more or less).
If SN ceased to exist you would have to run SC locally.

SC is open source so development would still be possible.
The SB firmware however isn't open. Unless Logitech would release the
source or someone reverse-engineered the firmware we would be stuck
with whatever is available at the time.

-s.

OK

So simply:

Logitech/SB development present = SN or SC
Logitech/SB development gone = SC only (=local PC / server required)

If you remove your SN login info from SC you still have access to much
of the content in your Internet Radio menu. What I don't know is if
these still go out to SN anonymously or if they are direct streams.
Obviously, without a subscription management tool like on SN, anything
requiring unique login info will not work on SC.

But you can Cut Paste any standard station URL from any outside
source into your SC Favorites, assuming the stream is in a native SB
player format.

Re: [slim] What happens if Logitech go tits up ?

2009-03-18 Thread Goodsounds

Before you whip yourself and others into a frenzy, check out the
information that shows that this proposition is nonsense. At least, for
now.

Logitech is a public company and its results are released quarterly.
For the 9 months ending December 2008, income after tax was $142
million. Sales and income were down for the quarter compared to the
year before, but that's true of most companies.

Shareholders equity exceeds $1 billion. Sure, it's possible for any
company to have future writeoffs, restructurings, downturns in the
business, etc to erode equity. I'd guess that many other companies
would love to be in the relatively strong financial position that
Logitech has right now.

Also in this context, it is likely fair to assume that the Streaming
Media unit is a very small part of the total entity. Probably even
immaterial from an operating results perspective.

As bigger as easier to get rid of uneconomic parts.

But one part of my decision for the Squeezebox was because it uses open
source software which is running on a local system. Loss of services
would be painful but I guess we would still have many possibilities
open due to the the great support of the community.

Yes - as I said, you could obviously still use these devices on your

But I'm the opposite - I've managed to go completely SN so that I can
