Re: [slim] Using Transporter TOSLINK out for bluetooth adapter

2019-01-09 Thread d6jg

I’m using them purely to listen to my records as I record them to FLAC
so that I can move around a bit and so SWMBO can still watch TV while
I’m doing it.
It’s not a “serious use” case as once the LP is in FLAC format and if I
want to listen on headphones I’m using the wired B into my iPhone (or
iPad) with iPeng / LMS.
The Bluetooth RX thingy I put in my pocket as I do with the iPhone.

Yes, you can use them wired but that kind of defeats the purpose. These
could work, but I'd have to use the cable supplied by Bose as it uses
the skinnier jack on the headphones. Depends on the quality of the DAC
in the device; the Bose DAC is quite good, I understand, which is why
I'm disappointed that it doesn't support the APTX codex. Although these
days, I suppose, most DACs in small devices are pretty good.

Not sure I want to have to tote around the device in my shirt pocket or
something, though.

Ron
Are the Bose cans wired as well as wireless?
I recently made my wired B cans into Bluetooth enabled with one of
these

I have a pair of these devices one in TX mode into the headphone socket
of my amp and another in RX mode for the headphones. I don’t see why the
RX version wouldn’t work with your new Bluetooth transmitter.

Re: [slim] Using Transporter TOSLINK out for bluetooth adapter

2019-01-09 Thread RonM

So, I got my Avantree Oasis Plus bluetooth device, and after an initial
panic (I'd plugged the optical cable into the optical out of the
Avantree, and of course it didn't work) it works fine. Some
observations:

Sadly, the Bose 35II headphones that I received for Christmas do not
support the advanced codecs like APTX, so can't take advantage of
high-res bluetooth transmission. This is one of the big pluses of the
Avantree device, in that it supports both high-res and low latency modes
for Bluetooth. So if you want to have high-res capabilities in an
untethered headphone, or to watch videos with the audio properly
synched, look elsewhere than Bose. The sound is not bad, the noise
cancellation is great (although in my quiet house this isn't a big
plus), the headphones are comfortable but they don't take advantage of
the higher-res signal available.

The Avantree device has excellent range. It uses the highest power
bluetooth standard, and in theory has a range of up to 300 feet,
although this will depend on the receiving device. In any event, more
than enough to work anywhere in the house and out into the garden. Not
extensively tested, as it's cold and snowing, but no reason to think it
won't work.

And I can verify that the optical out of the Transporter is indeed
volume-controlled.

The SPDIF out of the transporter is volume controlled so I assume the
optical is too.

That, in fact, is exactly what I had ordered from the Canadian Amazon
site.

My only concern is whether the optical out on the Transporter is
volume-controlled, but I figure that if the analog outs are it must be
as well. We'll see.
