In my experience using devices other than default can be flaky, but this
Latest version working fine thanks. Don't seem to need to change the
default Player Mac Address - it works without changing. Is that MAC
address the equivalent of 127.0.0.1 in the IP address realm? Or just
coincidence?

The default MAC address for the squeezelite-win
I finally found some time to start working on the applet and I have a
couple of questions.
Is there any example or documentation on a basic applet so I can use it
as a starting point? (Maybe a "Hello World" example I can add to the
menu and do something, or instructions on how to add the applet
