Thanks fsmithred :^)
Up to now, I've avoided anything to do with PAM (hey who
needs yet another layer of complexity?) but I can see the
security benefits. I found a decent primer here:

runsvdir-start. This was resolved by commenting out the
offending line in /etc/inittab.
runsvdir-start is typically a symlink to /etc/runit/2.
The runit package for devuan should provide this symlink,
since AFAICT the debian runit relies on systemd unit files.

I like to think I know a lot about linux by this time,
but still tend to get caught out when things go wrong :-/

Hi List,
I've been backing up my system with rsync years without
the --xattrs option. I'm curious if important parts of
Debian/Devuan rely on extended attributes.

Often hardware is discarded due to failed electrolytic capacitors.
People don't want to pay a couple hundred for a guy
who can spot a bulging can and solder in a new one.
I just got an assortment of electrolytics from amazon for
around $15, 300 pieces!

Certainly cups uses D-Bus to do all its desktop
notifications, and it makes sense that cups supports
these notifications.
If you don't like what they did, the code is available to
you to alter to your liking, or just try lprng.
