I've found the way to get the text in 2 columns without having to do
anything more than add params to my customized style sheet. The problem is
now that all headings are either butting into the other column or displaying
outside the margins.
Any ideas of what else do I need to do?

I got the new catalog resolver working. In the documentation, it does
not state if there are default values for verbosity etc. I also was

column document and went to more trouble than I needed to to get around
it. Apparently, span=all does the trick. See Norm's comment (and
