See:
https://www.shlomifish.org/philosophy/computers/web/choice-of-docs-formats/ for
a roundup. pandoc often does an imperfect job from my experience. I prefer
asciidoctor over the markdowns because it has a first-class docbook 5/xml
backend support and because "every markdown dialect has an army and a navy"
(see:

xsltproc complained about your fix, and with it even .jpg imgs did not render.
Maybe it was a copy+paste issue.

[docbook-apps] [ANN] docmake 0.0603 ; Choice of Docs Formats document updated ; The shlomif-docbook generation framework

2018-10-23 Thread Shlomi Fish
Hi all!

This email announces three new updates:

1. https://metacpan.org/pod/distribution/App-XML-DocBook-Builder/bin/docmake v.
0.0603 with support for generating xhtml5 and the new --trailing-slash=0 flag:

docmake is a tool to render DocBook/XML into its resultant formats using XSLT:
XHTML, XSL-FO, PDF, RTF, etc. For a brief help type docmake help .

It aims to be a replacement for xmlto -
http://cyberelk.net/tim/software/xmlto/ . As opposed to xmlto, it is written in
Perl, which is easier to get right than xmlto's Bash, and xmlto hasn't been
updated for a long time when I started work on docmake.

# To render input.xml file into XHTML
docmake -o output.xhtml xhtml input.xml

# Same with more verbose output
docmake -v -o output.xhtml xhtml input.xml

# Avoid trailing slash when emitting to a dummy file in a dir
docmake --trailing-slash=0 -o output/notneeded.xhtml xhtml5 input.xml

# Render into pdf
docmake -v -o output.pdf pdf input.xml

# Same while not rebuilding if not necessary
docmake -v --make -o output.pdf pdf input.xml

# Render using a Stylesheet
docmake -v -o output.xhtml -x my-stylesheets.xsl xhtml input.xml

-

2. The document
https://www.shlomifish.org/philosophy/computers/web/choice-of-docs-formats/ was
recently updated and still recommends taking a look at DocBook 5/XML and
Asciidoc(tor).

It is available under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ .

3. I recently started extracting my homesite's GNU Make-based framework for
generating various formats out of DocBook 5 and it is available here for now:

https://github.com/shlomif/cookiecutter--shlomif-latemp-sites

it requires docmake, gnu make, some CPAN modules and may be too opinionated,
and documentation is somewhat scarce at the moment. Licence is
https://tldrlegal.com/license/mit-license .

Enjoy!

Re: [docbook-apps] Find unused XML files in a projectSZ@#%€£€¿£€=£_£¥:-\O:-)O:-):-D££¡3

2014-08-08 Thread Shlomi Fish

  Hello docbook-apps.

I have a large set of projects that I am looking to scrub for unused
graphics and XML files prior to sending off to localization.

Some of my colleagues have created some very basic bash and batch
scripts to scan through the folders and find files that aren’t referenced
in any of the source files so we can delete them, but I worry that these
scripts don’t catch everything (unused XML files in the base directory that
reference images will ‘bless’ this images) and we could still have
extraneous files left over or accidentally delete important ones
 unknowingly.

Each project has a book.xml file that is the gold master for the
outputs. If the book.xml file or any of its includes doesn’t reference a
file in the project, it’s safe to delete. I was hoping that I could use
xmllint to tell me which files are loaded when I try to validate the
book.xml, but I haven’t found the magic formula yet.

I’ve tried the following command to reference all of the loaded files
during a pass, but it doesn’t seem to list the image files referenced,
which is mostly the point of this exercise, and I get a lot of noise from
the module files for the DTD on every include.
 $ xmllint --load-trace book.xml --xinclude --noout  test1

Has anyone had a similar problem to solve? Am I going about this the
 right way?

Thanks, and I’m open to any suggestion. If bash and xmllint don’t work
here, I am partial to Python as an alternative. Just saying.

Hi Bob,

In http://www.sagehill.net/docbookxsl/TOCcontrol.html#SectionTocs ,
«It's default value of 2 means only sections up to sect2 will appear in any
TOC.» == It's should be Its. Please correct it and maybe go over the rest
of the manuscript to catch other typos like that.

The DB stylesheet sources are here:

Please note that there are no separate trees for xsl-ns and xsl. Both
packages are generated from the same sources. In fact, to be able to
work with the source tree requires quite a bit of insight knowledge of
the build process, as well as a bunch of prerequisite tools. Unless you
really know what you are doing it might be best to stick to prepackaged

Please be aware that the DocBook XSL distributions are built from the SVN

the -ns- version is built from the non-namespaced version so they stay in

Re: [docbook-apps] [HELP] How can I get rid of the output of the revhistory / tag in the EPUB output

 HI Shlomi,
Your .xslt file is trying to do two things at once, and it won't work as
written. It seems you need to preprocess the XML to alter the legalnotice,
but you should do that step *before* processing it to generate epub output.

 1. Run an XSLT process with xsltproc or saxon with your original preprocess
stylesheet without importing the epub stylesheet. That will generate a
temporary DocBook XML file with the altered legalnotice.

 2. Run the ruby process on that temporary DocBook file using another
stylesheet that imports epub/docbook.xsl and includes the empty d:revhistory
 templates.

Using this stylesheet does not appear to get rid of the revhistory in the
final epub either:

# Start of docbook-epub-preproc.xsl
?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
xsl:stylesheet version=1.0
xmlns=http://docbook.org/ns/docbook;
xmlns:d=http://docbook.org/ns/docbook;
xmlns:xsl=http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform;
xmlns:xlink=http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink;

xsl:import href=epub/docbook.xsl /

xsl:output method=xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8 indent=no
/

!-- Get rid of the revhistory element --
xsl:template match=d:revhistory mode=titlepage.mode /
xsl:template match=d:revhistory /

/xsl:stylesheet
 End.

Any insights will be appreciated.

Ah, OK.

If you are using DocBook 5 and the namespaced stylesheets, then any custom
templates that specify an element name must attach the namespace prefix to
the element name. See this section of my book for details:

 http://www.sagehill.net/docbookxsl/ProcesingDb5.html#Db5Xslt

Thanks! I'll remedy it.

So your empty template should use match=d:revhistory, where the d: prefix
is bound to the DocBook 5 namespace.

OK, thanks. Will do.

But I looked at docbook-epub-preproc.xslt and it does not import the stock
epub/docbook.xsl file. I don't understand how it produces any useful output
at all. Are you use that is the file you use?

== Are you sure that is the file you use?

Yes, I'm positive. It does appear to produce something, and if I put invalid
XML inside the .xslt, then xslt fails spectacularly, but maybe it's one of
xsltproc's quirks and things it ignores and moves on to without failing
spectacularly.

[docbook-apps] [HELP] How can I get rid of the output of the revhistory / tag in the EPUB output

see below for more information - any help will be appreciated.

This seems to be misleading:

Tip

A quick way to turn off revhistory from output is to define an empty template

xsl:template match=revhistory mode=titlepage.mode/

dcramer_
https://github.com/rackerlabs/clouddocs-maven-plugin/blob/master/src/main/resources/cloud/webhelp/titlepage/titlepage.templates.xml
dcramer_ See how revhistory is commented out in the titlepage spec?
dcramer_ What you do is edit the titlepagespec, then generate a new
titlepage.xsl from it:
http://www.sagehill.net/docbookxsl/TitlePageNewElems.html dcramer_ Which you
then import into your customization layer. dcramer_ rindolf: Give that a
shot. If you're still having trouble, try the docbook-apps mailing list.
rindolf dcramer_: OK. rindolf dcramer_: isn't there an easier way?
dcramer_ Well, that's the right way :-) rindolf dcramer_: why doesn't
xsl:template match=revhistory mode=titlepage.mode/ rindolf work?
dcramer_ I'd have to dig in to see what template is generated by the
titlepage mechanism. But on the list Bob could answer that off the top of his
head I bet. dcramer_ The template spec stuff isn't really that hard.
dcramer_ 1. Edit the titlepage.xml provided with the dist to remove
revhistory dcramer_ 2. Generate titlepage.xsl by just running a provided
xslt over the edited spec. dcramer_ 3. Import result into your customization
layer. dcramer_ Easier in a way.

It seems to work fine with Saxon9, but Saxon9 is slow because the handling of
XML catalogue files there is so complicated, and I did not get to configuring
it.

Anyway, I would appreciate any insights because I spent many hours trying to
fix it since 12:00 and I'm a shipwreck.

[docbook-apps] How to programmatically get a list of elements of DocBook 4 and DocBook 5?

2012-11-24 Thread Shlomi Fish
Hi all,

here:

https://bitbucket.org/shlomif/vim-docbook-5-support

I have a repository where I am trying to get a machine readable list of DocBook
4 and DocBook 5 elements. What I have done of parsing the DocBook 5's RNG
appears to work fine, but I'm having trouble with parsing the DocBook 4 RNGs
from
http://www.docbook.org/rng/4.5/ and some elements, suck as ulink / are
missing. Should I just parse and extract element name=... from all the RNG
fragments and then concatenate them and remove duplicates? Or is there a better
way?

I tried to find a way to extract this information out of the DocBook 4.x DTD,
but could not find a DTD parser that allowed for introspection.

[docbook-apps] DocBook/XSL Renders img / without the alt=... attribute in XHTML mode (xsltproc/xalan)

2012-11-02 Thread Shlomi Fish
Hi all,

DocBook/XSL ( docbook-style-xsl-1.77.1-3.mga3 on Mageia Linux 3/Cauldron)
converts DocBook 5 with mediaobject with the alt tags to img /s without
the alt=... attribute. I am attaching here a sample document (compressed with
gzip) - it's in Hebrew, but you can view the XHTML fine.

Here are the command I use to render it and both give me img-s without the
alt=... attribute:

$ java org.apache.xalan.xslt.Process -IN hebrew-html-tutorial.xml -XSL
http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/xhtml/docbook.xsl -OUT
foo.html

$ xsltproc http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/xhtml/docbook.xsl
hebrew-html-tutorial.xml

I verified that they open files
from /usr/share/sgml/docbook/xsl-stylesheets-1.77.1/xhtml/html-rtf.xsl / etc.

Can anyone help? Am I doing something wrong? Is this a bug? Is there a
workaround?

A book (or web site) with detailed examples of output vs. input would
be very useful. The tools are described in great detail lots of
places, but hard-core complete book examples, including the

chance of getting such for Docbook 5? I scrounged all around
O'Reilly's site and couldn't find anything except final examples
generated by customized styles sheets which were not there.

Some of my latest essays are in DocBook 5 format:

 Hi Shlomi,
The template named language.attribute generates an xsl:attribute element,
and it must appear just after an output element's start tag. The problem is
that in your custom template, you are calling that template and generating
an attribute but you have not started an output element yet. The p
element to which you want to attach the attribute is generated by the
template named paragraph, which you call after language.attribute. Perhaps
instead of customizing d:para, you should customize the template named
 paragraph.

Thanks!

That seems to have done the trick. Now the custom.xsl is working.

 Hi all!

I'm trying to use the custom.xsl here:

 https://svn.berlios.de/svnroot/repos/web-cpan/doc-Hebrew-HTML-Tutorial/trunk/hebrew-html-tutorial/

(You can use the svn checkout to checkout it.)

What it's trying to do is to propagate xml:lang into various elements
that I'm using and require it.

I'm using the command (also in the makefile):

 {{{
 xsltproc --path
 /usr/share/sgml/docbook/xsl-stylesheets-db5-1.73.2/xhtml -o
 hebrew-html-tutorial/index.html custom.xsl hebrew-html-tutorial.xml
 }}}

And I'm getting the following errors:

 {
 runtime error: file
 /usr/share/sgml/docbook/xsl-stylesheets-db5-1.73.2/common/l10n.xsl
 line 140 element attribute
xsl:attribute: Cannot add attributes to an element if children have
been already added to the element.
 runtime error: file

 line 140 element attribute
xsl:attribute: Cannot add attributes to an element if children have

 runtime error: file

xsl:attribute: Cannot add attributes to an element if children have

 line 140 element attribute
xsl:attribute: Cannot add attributes to an element if children have
been already added to the element.
 error: file hebrew-html-tutorial.xml
 xsltRunStylesheet : run failed
 }

Now custom.xsl contains the following customisation:

 {{
 xsl:template match=d:para
  xsl:call-template name=language.attribute /
  xsl:call-template name=paragraph
   xsl:with-param name=class
 xsl:if test=@role and $para.propagates.style != 0
   xsl:value-of select=@role/
 /xsl:if
   /xsl:with-param

 xsl:if test=position() = 1 and parent::d:listitem
   xsl:call-template name=anchor

   /xsl:call-template
 /xsl:if

 xsl:call-template name=anchor/
 xsl:apply-templates/
   /xsl:with-param
  /xsl:call-template
 /xsl:template
 }}

 When I remove the xsl:call-template name=language.attribute / the
problem disappears but naturally then I don't have xml:lang propagated
 which is what I want.

The .xml validates according to {{ xmllint --relaxng ~/docbook.rng
 hebrew-html-tutorial.xml }}.

 1) Is there any CSS stylesheet for DocBook available?

CSS stylesheet are used on the web to customize the look and feel of HTML
files. DocBook is not compatible with HTML and many of the tags and
semantics are different.

It may be possible to convert a DocBook/XML file into HTML on the fly
using an XSLT stylesheet. Generally speaking, DocBook is intended for
off-line processing.

To change it into blue add the following line to your jadetex.cfg file:

Works for me as well. However, URLs that include _ or - are appended a /

DOCBOOK-APPS: Customizing DocBook to Produce a real URL Tree

2002-11-26 Thread Shlomi Fish

Hi!

I'm not happily using the db2* tools to convert DocBook/XML into various
formats. However, I noticed that jade put all the HTML file into one
directory and calls them with obscure names such as:

book1.html
c16.html
x208.html

etc. Now what I want is that it will be real URL Tree:

 (Root)
[id1]
[id1]/[id2]
[id1]/[id2]/[id3]
[id4]

etc. As is the case with my Quad-Pres generated lectures:

http://vipe.technion.ac.il/~shlomif/lecture/Freecell-Solver/slides/
http://vipe.technion.ac.il/~shlomif/lecture/Autotools/
http://vipe.technion.ac.il/~shlomif/lecture/Gimp/1/slides/

[id*] are the IDs I assigned to the chapters and sections.

My question: how can I customize the DSSSL (or XSL while we're at it)
stylesheets to produce such a tree? (and still maintain prev-next-up
link consistency and link to the same CSS stylesheet)

Shlomi Fish

With DSSSL (and I imagine XSL) it would be perfectly possible to generate the

However, DSSSL is extensible so you could create an external procedure to do
 this for you.

There would be quite a fair bit of work involved for a novice - and a few days
 for an expert.

Would it be possible to scan the XML beforehand (say with a Perl script)
and make the directory structure for jade, a priori?

For the DSSSLs, in your customization layer you need to set:

  (define %use-id-as-filename%
   #t)

For XSL, two params do the task you're trying to assign. If you set

   xsl:param name=use.id.as.filename select=1

the id attribute will be used for all chunks except the root, which
will be named index.html. If you would rather set the root filename
   to the id, set

   xsl:param name=root.filename select=@id

Thats not what he asked for, everything is still in one directory.

DOCBOOK-APPS: db2pdf Generates Flat Acrobat Bookmarks

Hi!

I'm using db2pdf on Mandrake Linux 9.0, with openjade and some other

My problem is that the PDF generated by db2pdf -c /etc/sgml/catalog
contain flat Acrobat Reader bookmarks: all the chapters and section are
under one another, and I cannot expand or collapse anything. I remember it
used to be fine in the configuration that came with Mandrake 8.2.

I'm using Acrobat Reader 5 on i386 Linux. For a demonstration of what I

Arabic+English) DocBook documents. While I have no intention of using it
that way, I am interested to know what it's status is.

I know that the various end-formats (HTML, LaTeX and RTF) use a different
model for bidirectionality, so it is not trivial to convert them. As a
side note I wish to add that someone I know, noted that he could not get a
Russian DocBook document he wrote to translate well. Did anybody here have
a positive experience with it?

Regards,

Shlomi Fish
