[libreoffice-documentation] Google Season of Docs/LibreOffice Online Guide

2019-05-27 Thread Aaron Peters
Hello LO Docs team,

I'm hoping to speak to one of the Season of Docs mentors about
contributing. I've looked over the list of ideas

and am very, very interested in working on the LibreOffice Online guide. I
don't see a mentor currently listed, so whoever will be in that role,
please feel free to reach out.

About myself, I'm a business analyst/software designer by day as well as a
freelance technical writer. I've been published in outlets including Linux
Format , Linux Journal
, MakeUseOf
, and most recently
Lifewire . I've written on
all sorts of topics, but I've done my best to focus in the areas of Linux
and free software. While many of these have been shorter-form (i.e.
anywhere from 800-2,000 words), I also have experience authoring
longer-form guides, including:

- Use a Static Site Generator to Build a Quick Website
:
Installing and using Jekyll, including themes, plugins, and headless admin
UI.
- How to Create an Android App: Everything You Need to Know
:
A beginner's guide to creating Android apps using both the MIT App Inventor
as well as Android Studio/Java, from installation through coding.
- Guide to KDE: The Other Linux Desktop
: An
introduction for beginner Linux users to not just KDE, but the concept of
multiple Linux desktops.

I've been looking for a good opportunity to start giving back to the
community in the form of documentation, so I was very glad to see the SoD
announcement. I'd love to start discussing the LOOL guide. I am also
interested in helping to update the Base and/or Draw guides as well, in the
event someone is already engaged with LOOL.

Thanks, look forward to submitting my proposal!

Aaron

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Question of Terminology?

My 2c is that Panel is more commonly used and understood by the average
person.

"Decks" may well be more familiar to those within the UX profession.

While this is definitely not a critical issue, I feel that we should as

identify the components of the software's UI.

Any thoughts, or should we discuss at the next meeting?

Hi Dan,

What Kees was referring to was a mistake that had somehow crept into my
update of the template. The two words "Bold Italic" in the "Table
Heading" text description of the template had been directly formatted
instead of the correct style being applied. This was not a discussions
about how or where specific styles should be applied. I can see how this
short email exchange could easily be misinterpreted, so I will try to
write more detailed replies in future.

Best Regards
Dave

When I looked at

there were just a few things I felt might improve it.

It assumes the reader knows how to join a mailing list. The LO mailing
lists might be the first one a person has tried to join. And for
myself, knowing that different mailing list programs have different
requirements for the subscription/registration process, I personally
felt uncertain what to do after reading:

"[...] from other volunteers. Subscribe to join the documentation team.

Please register in our documentation mainling list:

documentation@global.libreoffice.org: Discussions [...]"

So I have a few suggestions:

1. Correct that tiny typo: mainling

2. Expand it a little to say something like:

"To join the documentation team and help our efforts, subscribe to one
or more of the mailing lists below. You do this simply by emailing a
message (any message)[*] to the list you're interested in.

[*] Is that true? Or are there some requirements? I guessed a subject
line of "subscribe and/or a body that included the word 'subscribe'.

Maybe just a link from that page to
https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists which has more details,
as you asked for.

3. Perhaps add a PS to that page (or include in the Welcome email), a
note explaining the etiquette required for this ML.
Covering stuff like how to include (obfuscate?) email addresses in
messages, use or restriction on links to personal websites, as well as a
simple statement about respect and so forth.

(This occurred to me because I almost included a link to my blog in my
signature, then felt that doing so could well be out of place and seen
as self-promotion. IMHO Dave Barton's note just now about not changing
the subject line, to keep messages in a thread, would be a good example
of one of the etiquette rules.)

Regarding the sign-up process, which also contains the excellent advice
to browse the ML archives, on the three occasions I visited the link

http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.comp.documentfoundation.libreoffice.documentation
over the course of a couple of hours, it always failed with an "Error
522 Connection timed out". (Ray ID: 4dc62aba5b3a942b • 2019-05-25
08:34:22 UTC)
Ditto just now, which is a couple of days after I first drafted this
message. From the error page:

Ah - I think GMANE gave up the ghost recently. Thanks for pointing that
out, I've asked the folks on the infrastructure IRC channel to look at that.

Best wishes,

Drew

"What can I do?
If you're a visitor of this website:
Please try again in a few minutes.

If you're the owner of this website:
Contact your hosting provider letting them know your web server is not
completing requests. An Error 522 means that the request was able to
connect to your web server, but that the request didn't finish. The most
likely cause is that something on your server is hogging resources."

Hi Kees,

Yes, good catch.

I will upload the corrected template in a little while.

Thanks
Dave

I disagree about Bold Italic being direct formatting. Under the Font
tab, Bold Italic is one choice for the font style Liberation Sans. To
me, the question is whether to use the Bold or Bold Italic style rather
than is this formatting using styles of direct formatting. If the choice
is Bold, then Strong Emphasis would be the proper choice to replace
Table Heading. Otherwise, Table Heading should be retained with the font
style Bold Italic.

To be perfectly honest Alex, when it come to anything to do with TDF I
don't have the vaguest idea.
Since "official" notices from the board often refer to "Satzung der
Stiftung" and the importance of compliance with German law, my guess
would be that one or more TDF board members would know "who those legal
advisors are".
