To have a consistent instruction across the documents, do we, for
example, say 'Click the Save button' or 'Click the Save icon'?
Is button reserved for such items as 'OK', 'Cancel', 'Apply' for example?

I think it should be Click Save, which is the way it is written in
the user guides I have upgraded and Jean suggested.

I didn't use a good example in the question, though I tried to clarify
it with a reply.
I ought to have used something like Navigator in the question as Save
can be a large button used with Cancel or others in dialogues. I do use
Click Save when referring to buttons in dialogues.
