Re: [Dorset] Is "dd" adequate for cloning a disk?

2023-10-30 Thread Andrew
To add to what Ralph said, if the disk uses GUID Partition Table (GPT)
then after the clone the backup GPT - which was at the end of the
original disk - will now be in the middle. GParted should detect and fix
this automatically, otherwise gdisk can do it.

You could use Clonezilla instead of dd, which is designed for the task,
although you'll still have to expand the partition with something like
GParted afterwards.

https://clonezilla.org/

Clonezilla is faster as it only clones areas of the filesystems which
actually contain data, but that probably doesn't matter for a one-off clone.

Re: [Dorset] Somewhat Off Topic - Can Anyone Recommend a Decent Tablet Computer?

2023-10-30 Thread Hugh Frater
I hate to say it, but having been through a tablet a year since the form
factor became a thing, I’ve settled on the smaller iPad Pro. This being my
second iPad.

They are excellent devices, with a long lifespan and excellent hardware.

I always buy them used/refurbished, usually the previous generation.

Just a thought: I wonder if an E-ink tablet would be a good idea, though the
contrast might be lacking a bit for text-on-colour sections.

2023-10-30 Thread Ralph Corderoy
Hi John,

I think it should work. This Arch Linux wiki page may be useful as much
isn't specific to Arch Linux. It includes using dd(1).
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Disk_cloning

Note, partitions tend to have unique random IDs at the start of them
these days and the copy means they are no longer unique because two are
present at once. This shouldn't matter much if soon after the copy the
machine is shutdown and one of the drives removed.

All the disk being copied means the partition table and instructions for
booting at the start of the disk will be copied too. Unless your
laptop's BIOS needs some change to boot from an SSD, booting once the
HHD is removed and the SSD remains should ‘just work’.

Disk which isn't allocated to a partition.

Yes.

Others who have done disk cloning more recently may have up to date
advice.

Re: [Dorset] Somewhat Off Topic - Can Anyone Recommend a Decent Tablet Computer?

2023-10-30 Thread Peter Merchant

WE have had a few, and I have been happy with Lenovo ones. I once had a 10" one, but it was
eminently droppable, so I now have an 8" one. I recently bought Val a new 8" one, but it has
Android 12 and is a pain to use. I recommend an 8" one over the 7" ones as it is significantly
larger.  Looking at my list, my tablet is Android 10 and my phone Android 13, and both are easy to use.

I suggest that we meet for coffee somewhere and you can have a play before
committing. I got our latest from Currys for about £89. Via Quidco!

cheers,

Peter

[Dorset] Is "dd" adequate for cloning a disk?

2023-10-30 Thread JD
I've bought a SSD to replace the sole HDD in an old laptop (Thinkpad
T410) and I intend to use dd to copy the disk.  Does that seem
sensible?  In particular:
Will the SSD be bootable immediately or is some configuration
change needed?
The SSD is bigger that the HDD - what will the unused portion look
like and can I use gparted to expand the single partition or create a
second one?

Thanks,

[Dorset] Somewhat Off Topic - Can Anyone Recommend a Decent Tablet Computer?

2023-10-30 Thread Terry Coles

Hi,

After years of resistance, I'm going to get a tablet!  Ideally it would
be one that ran Linux of course, but the main specs needed are good
resolution and plenty of contrast.

The reason for this is my deteriorating eyesight.  Generally speaking,
I'm OK with distance vision, but reading small text on coloured
backgrounds is becoming increasingly difficult.  This means that my
magazine subscriptions are largely wasted because I cannot read them.

However, I do know that I can read PDFs of the magazines on my wife's
iPad and on my desktop monitor, so getting a decent tablet is probably
the most convenient solution.  If possible, I don't want to spend a
fortune, so Samsung Galaxy Tabs at circa £1000 are out, and in any case
the performance of this type of device is probably way over the top for
reading a magazine.  However, I am prepared to pay for the kind of
performance I need, hence this query.

Thanks in anticipation.
