I found Porteus Kiosk a while ago and have been meaning to try it:

So when I read your message I decided to download and install Porteus
Kiosk to give it a go. It does seem fairly simple. There's quite a few
options, but it seems easy to set it up to only allow access to one
web site so I think it'll do what you want.

The installer creates a text configuration file. You might want to get
a separate USB stick ready to store the configuration file on, so you
can edit/re-install with it at a later date.

You can install it to a hard disk, possibly to a USB stick although I
haven't tried that. If you want the kiosk browser machine to be
running for a long time (eg. on all day for many years) then you might
want to use an SSD rather than a hard disk, just because hard disks
have a tendency to suffer mechanical failure. I suspect Porteus
doesn't write to the disk at all after it's booted, but I haven't
actually checked that yet.

Thanks Andrew, just a quick update, I have installed Porteus Kiosk 3.7.
While I have not had much time to play with it, I have set up the
parameters and got it locked to the one web site as I wanted and it
seems to work. There is a newer version but from version 4 onwards it is
only available for 64bit machine, 3.7 is the last of the 32bit installs.

Cheer Andrews, I dug out the PC from its dusty cupboard and fired it
up...or at least tried to. It failed to bootup, so I opened
it up and found that I had removed the memory and the hard disk at some
stage!! Fortunately I have a supply of old disks and old memory so I was
able to get the PC running, I have downloaded the ISO image so will burn
it to disk later and then try it out.

[Dorset] New Kiosk Project

2017-04-28 Thread Tim

I am going to make a Kiosk PC which can only access one web site, the
question is how?

I have a PC, I intend to install to hard disk rather than run from DVD
or USB, I want to use Debian as the base distro (it is what I am most
familiar with). I would prefer auto-login and auto-launch of the browser.

I have had a look on google and there is loads of stuff listed but has
anybody done the same, what are the must haves and best to avoid? I
would appreciate any pointers anybody has.

regards

Tim
