I building LBHA Email cluster based on Exim+Dovecot+LDAP.
Now I thinking what the most right way to LB Dovecot(2 nodes with shared
storage).
HA-Proxy? Dovecot Proxy? Nginx? Else?

We run it in an test case also, with no problems till now.
We have about 200 mailboxes, not much i know.
We have mailboxes with more than 5 messages, and it all works well.
No problems after the normal kernel Tuning.
Could you say what tuning do you use and why?

If so, I would drop SSL/TLS and sniff the connection, whether or not
Thunderbird checks the mailboxes at all.
Seems to it is not possible in near future. It is heavy used production
server. :-(

To make it compile in FreeBSD you need to:
cd /usr/ports/mail/dovecot
make extract
mkdir work/dovecot-1.1.*/sys
locate sysmacros.h
cp /your/path/to/sysmacros.h work/dovecot-1.1.*/sys/
patch it as sayd at wiki.
And then all work well.
