Well, so, I tried it again and double-checked all permissions. I made sure
everyone had full access to all files but the problem still persists.
Does someone have another idea?

I also thought it might be because of permissions. So I checked them and
changed them on those files but it didn't make any difference. As far as I
am seeing it I don't get any Error Message, too.
I am using Windows 7.

Sounds a bit like a permission problem, I see sometimes the same when using
vi from cygwin a chmod 755 on the file helps in that case
Which OS are you using?

output I expected but when I then open a file in that folder, close it
