On Ebay there is an E-TEK FR-4 DIGITAL DIAL FOR DRAKE 4-LINE EQUIPMENT, item
#380210065831, listed. This is the first time I have known of a product like
this. Will it work with older Drakes like the TR3? Did this kind of gear work
very well at all?
Thanks for your input.

The E-TEK FR-4 is for the twins such as the T-4XC and R-4C. The E-TEK
FR-4tr will work with the TR-3 and TR-4 series.
I have 2 FR-4tr readouts and they work ok but they are little slow to
update when you turn the VFO.

What's wrong with WWV?
You don't have to buy that.

Thanks to all who offerred help.
I let the transmitter sit over the weekend and on Monday it was OK again.
Back to normal. I don't understand, but since it don't seem broke I think I
won't open it up.

Richard,
Your setting will be only as accurate as you signal generator. If you have a
seperate receiver that will tune any WWV station, tune it to WWV and drape the
antenna near the calibratot. Or use a frequency counter.

It sure is if you don't count the cost of a receiver and aerial. Both of
which are needed to get that free station ;-) .

You've already got the receiver, that's what you're trying to calibrate, and without an antenna the receiver is useless
anyway. A few feet of wire will receive WWV.

Do you have ANY receiver aside from your TR-4? It doesn't have to have
a BFO or be particularly stable or sensitive.
If all you have is a Broadcast Band table radio, see if you have a
commercial station on an even 100 kHz frequency such as 700, 800, 1200,
etc. It doesn't have to

OK. That 0.005 cap isn't particularly critical. The 1000 ohm resistor
is the load, the cap is just to prevent shorting the DC to ground. Any
disc ceramic from 0.001 to 0.01 uF at 500V or more would work just fine.
I wouldn't worry too much about the calibrator. As long as
I dug out my am antenna for my receiver and I have two (1) 800kHz - the
birthplace of MoTown CKLW and (2) 700kHz, someplace around Detroit.
Their signal is not as strong.
So I guess I'm in business! So much for justifying a Hammarlund purchase
:-) .

Would the trick be to tune to the image frequency and use the preselector
to peak the WWV signal?

You don't have to justify a Hammerlund. Just enjoy it.

There is also a product by Almost All Digital Electronics which add digital
readout to a huge number of boatanchor radios. I have not personally used
any, but I have read many good reports.

Chuck,
Not true. You know it. I have a dozen of your emails to prove it.

No, I meant uF. 0.001 uF = 1000 pF 0.01 uF = 10,000 pF
Essentially it's a bypass cap. The resistor is 1000 ohms, and the
purpose is to detune one half of the transformer by loading it down
while tuning the other half. The capacitor is to prevent sticking a
1000 ohm resistor
0.005pF is unreasonably small.
My money is on uF.

Jack,
I've used the Almost All Digital DFD103 display on my C-line for
about 10 years now. Looks and works great. It does load the
oscillator a bit on 10 meters, but a tweak of the 10 meter trimmer
takes care of it. Other than that, plug-and-play after calibration.

That's good to hear! I've had the same opinion for years, but I hate to
tell someone to ignore the factory procedure. Kinda sets a bad
example.. :-)
I've seen it in other procedures, other than Drake gear, but I've found
that with two-three-four iterations I come out the same.
I received this information from a ham that I have been corresponding with, and
am reposting it here (with permission) to preserve it for posterity in the
bitverse.
