Begin with a quick check to eliminate one variable. Verify the tubes are indeed
6JB6.
I once managed to causeoscillation at 40 with 12GJ5's in a TR-3.

OK. As others have said, we are missing something fundamental, as transmitters just do not do
this!! :-) Verifying that the PA tubes ARE 6JB6 is a good idea. The Simpson is more than adequate
for all but very low resistance readings, 2 - 15 ohm resistors and the voltage across

Thanks for the advice. Where is this hex for the endplay that you're talking
about? I'm about ready to buy a junker to steal its PTO...

I brought two Drakes to this year's field day.
Primary was TR4CW with a RV4C. Backup was TR7.
I used MN2000 and the Dl1000 dummy load.
Fed a 20 meter half-square antenna.
Worked great. Had fun.

Hi Steve:
The socket head set screw with hex lock nut support the rear end of the
main tuning shaft screw. There is a cup on the end of the screw shaft
and a cup in the end of the set screw. A small steel ball rides between
the two and it sets the preload and endplay applied to the cone and
I set up a vintage station at our club's Field Day this year. Primary was a
Viking Ranger with a 2B. We also used a T4XB/R4B. All was on CW using a
Johnson TR switch for QSK. The entire club made 400 contacts in total
including SSB and digital while 300 out of the 400 of them were made with
Thanks, Curt - I found it. Unfortunately, this PTO is not getting any
better. With the cover off, it stays more stable and I can't find any
components to indict.
I'm considering bidding on a junker on fleabay if I can get it cheap enough
and plucking the PTO from it, doing a transplant and
Great pictures Jim, thanks for sending them. Looks like you were really
enjoying the event (what's not to like?!)

Guys,
I know it's not Drake related, but if your even mildly interested in CW
this is way cool. If your on this list I suspect you are. I may have a
Mk V, but my C line is the weapon of choice for CW.
Be sure to check out the slide show
