But seriously, my fixed temp WTCPN with a 700 degree tip will handle some
pretty big stuff with a decent chisel
I just replaced the filter caps in a Drake 1A and R-4B using a Weller
100/140. That gun is a hopeless match against the chassis. Any future
filter cap changes on copper-plated Drake equiopment will be with big
wattage soldering iron as many others have suggested..

PS: I do have one that has a heating element about 1 in diameter. It
laughs at PL-259's. ... I think I paid $1 at a garage sale for it. The tip
is a 3/8 chunk of tinned copper.

The thing I have learned about guns is that it's a good idea to re-snug the
connections (nuts or setscrews) at the tip before each use for best results.
Guns don't have a lot of thermal mass at the tip, so it also helps to use the
two-handed approach - supplement the heat from the gun tip with

Soak the braid in rosin flux first, that helps.
