Carl, first of all it would be a sin to modify a nice piece
of Drake equipment. With that said I do not like any
Drake modifications, I like it the way it was, back when.
The problem is finding the 6JB6 tubes, and if you know where
to look new tubes are still available. We know lately

As a long time Drake owner, I would offer a loud Amen to Ron's
comments. In the best of all worlds, use Sylvania tubes if you can
obtain them, and they usually will not need neutralization. As a young
man going to Ohio State University in the 70's, I worked at the Drake
dealership in
Hello-
Can anyone tell me what the generic part number is for these
Drake-branded devices found in the SPR-4?
Q-9, Q-12, Q-13 = EP487 (TO-220 power transistor)
CR-8, CR-22 = AN994 (Zener Diodes)
Thanks!
Nice analysis Ron!

I would recommend a 220 volt fan over the cabinet on 120 volts either
pulling or sending air over the final tubes. That is the best way I can see
to save on tubes. I somewhere have a schematic to balance the final tubes
which would make sense if one can not afford to install and toss tubes for
Well, I finally obtained another pair of 6JB6 tubes (RCA) that will load
acceptably on all bands, including 10M. These from a company in Tempe, AZ.
Probably no surprise to others on the list. So now, will attempt
neutralization per the manual, unless any can suggest a better method.

Hi All:
I have a NOS front panel for my L7 amplifier. It still has the original
protective plastic covering on it that has become brittle over the years and is
stuck fast to the panel. I tried to scrape it off with my fingernail and still
it doesn’t want to come off. If I try to use
Hi Jim,
I can't speak from experience in this particular example, but I'd try a
heat gun, carefully. Might soften the plastic sticky stuff enough to
allow peeling.

Jim, use lighter fluid, That will not damage the panel
paint and will dissolve the glue. When you pull off the
plastic it will leave a stripped finish, glue residue, which
with lighter fluid on a soft rag and a little rubbing that
will come off too. I have been there and done it with a

is a good place to buy tubes. You will pay more in many cases but the tubes are
good.
