Subject: [Drakelist] Six Meter Options

Hi All,

First of all, happy New Year to everyone!  Thanks for your help and advice
throughout the year.

Now to my question.  I now have a C line station running well and I like it
very much.  I use it primarily on AM and really like the vintage radio
activities.  I now have two other AM stations one of which I am going to sell
at an upcoming ham fest.  I am active on a six meter AM group here and would
like to land some sort of vintage six meter station, preferably some sort of
transceiver that will work well on true AM.  My question is, what did Drake
offer along that line?  If not Drake, what else might you recommend to me?

Thanks and very 73.

Kevin :)

Kevin,
Drake made the TR-6.  They are a bit hard to find, therefore very expensive.
They do, however, seem to work quite well and are good receivers.  Heathkit
made one, but the number is escaping, but it's like an SB-110.  That also seems
to be a good rig.  Both will be old in the tooth and need some TLC.

Either bad power supply regulation or perhaps a resistor.

[Drakelist] FS: Drake 4-line 30m Crystals

2010-05-25 Thread Bry Carling
FOR SALE: Drake 4-Line 30m Crystals

This is the PROPER recommended crystal as described for
Drake equipment to be used on the 10 MHz band.
Great for your Drake T4X and R4B etc.

If you use 21.100 MHz crystals which would be the normal ones
to use, there is a severe reduction in sensitivity.
For best band coverage you need a crystal on 20.800 MHz.

I have had just a limited number of these made up for Drake owners.

that's it for the run.

always RFI problems with our organ.

Today, the T4X-C was putting out 150 watts on 80 meters. All the
 other bands had much more
output power too. Amp meter said 400 - 450 mills. 320 - 350 mills is
 normal for me.400 - 450
amp mills seems to high? Is it?

Now there is no RFI problem on 40 meters.

What is going on? Any ideas?

Ken - is it next to the meter? Or on the bottom of the cabinet?

I see nothing like that on the front panel of a TR4...

It's been a long time. Is it a trimpot that you access through a hole
on the bottom, or is it a black plastic shaft protruding through?

Could it be VOX sensitivity perhaps?

Recently became a new Drake TR-4 owner via eBay. Got lucky and the radio
 appears to be in
pretty good shape. Purchased a Turner +3 mic to go with it and fixing to go
 through the radio
cleaning switches, pots, relays, etc to try and get her in top shape. Got a
fan to do a mod with
that on the finals. First lesson... Mic plug is not a ¼ plug... Ha! Ha!So
 muddled through that
 one.

Here is my question When looking at the radio from the front, on the left
 side, towards the
bottom of the cabinet, there is a pot with a knob, that is adjustable and has
 a off (I assume)
position. It is labeled, by an owner Max and Min. In receive, it appears
 to have no effect.
I haven´t been able to place the unit in transmit yet to see if it has any
 effect there.

I know the info here is sparse But I figured some of you guys that have
 forgotten more about
these radios than I will ever know may have a clue as to what this mod is
 If not, when I take
her apart I´ll try and trace it down and see where it goes

Geez, this radio sure sounds good.

Thanks in advance for any help

 Ken

Re: [Drakelist] Band crystals

2009-11-09 Thread Bry Carling
Hi Karl - I can supply those crystals. I will send you an e-mail off the list
but
wanted to post this so that the others know I have them available.

73 - Brian, AF4K.com

 Hello group.

Got hold of an old T-4X that have been used for parts some time ago. Thought
 the whole
project was impossible, but looking more closely at it I saw that it was
 quite nice. The vfo was
dismounted, but there. The PA cage wasn´t, but I had a spare for an old TR-4
 lying around. The
band crystals was (and is) missing, but for testing I borrowed them from a
 T-4XB. Well, turned
the switch (carefully, with a variac), and after some adjustments, it put out
 100W on 10-mtrs
and 150 on the other bands. Sounded nice also with my D104. Likewise on cw,
 nice tone.
The rig is nice now, and needs only the band crystals to be complete and
 working. I wonder if
anyone out there have a spare set lying around? And are willing to sell for a
 reasonable price.
 The crystals needed are 14.6 - 18.1 - 25.1 - 32.1 - 39.6. I would also like
 to have the 12.6 and
the 39.1 crystals for 160 and 1o m cw. By the way shipping to Norway is no
 problem. Mark as
gift or enclose invoice in plastic bag on the outside for customs,
 whichever you prefer.

Re: [Drakelist] SPR-4 crystals

2009-11-08 Thread Bry Carling
I can now supply custom crystals for the SPR-4 and other Drake rigs,
including the 20.8 MHz crystal that they specifiy for the 4-line.

Contact me via e-mail for details.

I've been thinking about getting more crystals for my (new to me)
SPR-4. I know I can get custom crystals cut, but that may be too
 expensive.

I found someone who sells reasonably priced crystals for the 4 line
radios, however, his crystals are listed as being slightly different
than the ones in the SPR-4 manual.

For example, his is listed as the one for 10 mHz reception is 21.100
mHz, the manual lists it as 21.09 mHz. (note the difference in decimal
 places)

Is this just a rounding error? Is there really a difference? Will
10kHz make a lot of difference? These would be for adding ham band
reception, which except for 40m is missing.

 Thanks in advance?

 Geoff.

Re: [Drakelist] R-4B and T-4XB crystals

2009-10-22 Thread Bry Carling
I would expect that's right - yup.

From: john joh...@nc.rr.com

In my experience, the crystal type is not critical in the Drake rigs. I
seem to recall ordering a $3 standard computer type crystal out of
mouser/digikey for use in a 2B as I recall, and it worked FB. HC6 or
smaller, it doesn't really seem to matter.

Re: [Drakelist] R-4B and T-4XB crystals

2009-10-21 Thread Bry Carling
I have some of them available for the Drake 2-A, 2_B, 2_C receivers
as well as for the 4-Line Drake Radios.

All the ones I do have available are listed here:

Are the extra band crystals available from ICM or similar suppliers for the
 R-4B and T-4XB,
I am very impressed with the twins I have just bought and want to be able to
 extend the
 ranges.
Are there any issues tuning them up on the warc bands or 160m?
Also if I send the cases back to be refinished at Hartzell do they re-stencil
 the lettering
 back on the lower panels?

Re: [Drakelist] FCC part 97.73 spectrial putiry question

2009-10-10 Thread Bry Carling
This reminds me of the Yaesu FT-101E tuning proceures.
They told you to tune up for 260 watts p.e.p. input on SSB and
only 180 watts DC Input on CW.

My friend said that it would do fine at 260 watts input on CW and he
was right. I always ran it like that and never had the slightest problem
with finals failing the whole time that I owned and used it!

Subject:[Drakelist] FCC part 97.73 spectrial putiry question

I've often wondered why the TR series (with 3 finals) is only allowed 10 more
milliamps of final plate current than the twins (with 2 tubes). That being
350 vs 340. Is it that multiple tubes in parallel are by their nature more
prone to distortion and therefore harmonics? Ideas?
