An update (24 hours later):
Decided today to access our production system (10,000+ items) using the
JSPUI interface rather than the usual XMLUI. Under JSP, I *was* able to
access the in-process submissions page... I cleaned up the duped fields
there and deleted a few long standing
I'm not familiar with S3 but there hase been an issue reported for 5.4
with google analytics
