[HCDX] RE: [ HCDX] Emerging Techniques in High-Tech DX

2003-01-07 Thread Guido Schotmans
Hello Guy and Nick (I don't have the e-mail address of Don and John ready)

Found this on HCDX :

You should note that neither Total Recorder nor any of the other virtual
recorders about which we know does continuous time-stamping like several of
the MD recorders do. There are running indications (in minutes and seconds)
of how far you are into the recording, as well as its total play-back
length. If you allow Total Recorder to save the recording automatically, the
default title is the time and date of the end of the recording. The lack of
absolute date-stamping does not seem to be much of a problem in practice.

RecAll-PRO is doing that for you. It's a tiny little recorder that
continuously time and date stamps recordings. You can download it at
http://www.sagebrush.com

Furthermore it has a Vox (voice-activation). That means that you don't have
to strangle with setting the times of the receiver and once again that of
the recorder. No RecAll records only when there is audio available at the
line-in and stops when there is no audio. You can activate settings to start
a new file every time when there is audio available again and file names can
have a date prefix if you want.

There's also the non-pro version but I recommend the pro.

Both can be tested during 15 real use days (not calendar days).

DX-radar looks like a very interesting tool, but it is a pity that it isn't
compatible with my AOR AR7030.

Ergo is also a real nice program but I advise you also to take a look at
RxWings at
http://home.wxs.nl/~jarkest/home.html It's Freeware and works with the
AR7030 from AOR, the NRD-535(D) from JRC and the RX320 from Ten Tec! Ergo
looks nicer but this program doesn't need correct frequency tuning for
displaying.

What's also nice is that you can tune the receiver while the PC tracks what
station you are tuned to (The 'snapping' range can be modified). And let's
hope that there will be a new MW-ILG in the near future as mentioned on
Bernd Friedewalds's site.

There is also a possibility to do a spectrum scan. This is probably
worthless compared to the DX-Radar but the nice thing about RxWings is that
the source code is open. So if you have programming skills it might be
possible to 'convert' the spectrum scanner into a DX-Radar.

For the rest, I thank you very much for this very interesting article on
HCDX. Although I am using a laptop too next to my AOR, I have learned a lot
about it.

Next month I will be for the first time on a real DX-pedition in Fjerristlev
(Denmark). I hope that conditions will rise and that I will be able to make
a lot of good catches.

[DX] Radio Mohacs 1485

2003-01-07 Thread Jim Solatie
Hei,

Unkarilaista Radio Mohacsia 1485 kHz on lokattu tentatiivisena
loppusyksystä.

Oheisesta linkistä löytyy kolmen minuutin verran otteita siitä, miten asema
kuului Bromarvissa lokakuussa 1999.

Toivottavasti tämä auttaa idaamisessa.

How to recover one or more deleted tracks
This procedure will help you to recover tracks you have erased accidentally when the
TOC has already been written. As the erased tracks are declared as free space, you
might have already recorded over the data.
· Insert the disc where you want to recover tracks on.
· Change the disc name to light the red TOC symbol in the display.
· Unplug the deck. (Do NOT write the TOC first!)
· Wait a few seconds.
· Hold down the AMS button (track selector) when plugging the deck in.
· Release the button.
Be careful! You are now in TEST MODE.
· Press eject.
· Remove the disc.
· Insert another disc you don't need any longer.
· Unplug the deck.
· Wait a few seconds.
· Plug the deck back in.
· Turn it on.
· The TOC will be copied on the other disc.
· Record anything to fill the free space.
· When the disc is full, unplug the deck again. (Do NOT write the TOC first!)
· Wait a few seconds.
· Hold down the AMS button (track selector) when plugging the deck in.
· Release the button.
Be careful! You are now in TEST MODE.
· Press eject.
· Remove the disc.
· Insert the first disc.
· Unplug the deck. (Do NOT write the TOC first!)
· Wait a few seconds.
· Plug the deck back in.
· Turn it on.
· The TOC will be written.
· Now there's one track with all the erased music.
It might be fragmented. Then you need to puzzle it back together.
· If the track doesn't play, press pause, forward a bit, release pause.
(repeat this, until you find music)

How to create a new TOC for a blank disc
This procedure will help you to recover a disc you have accidentally erased or that
contains a walkman recording that couldn't be completed.
Hint: This trick does not work with the Sony JE500 / JE510 model. It does work with
most older and the newer models like the JE520. The same applies to all other TOC
cloning tricks on this page.

· Record on another disc from beginning to the end, so that you have one track that
fills the whole disc.
· Insert the disc you want the TOC written on.
· Wait a few seconds.
· Unplug the deck.
· Wait a few seconds.
· Plug the deck back in.
· The TOC will be written.

Mielenkiintoinen proseduuri. Tnx JUS.
testata...

Re: [HCDX] Wireless Network QRM on MW

2003-01-07 Thread swl

I was wondering whether anyone else on the list has experienced this:

In North America, there have been a wide array of new Wireless LAN devices
in the marketplace and some discussion as to the impact on radio
enthusiasts. Unfortunately, there has been little regard as to the
consequences of dumping a lot of this activity right in the middle of
the shortwave bands, since, according to industry, there is nothing in
those wavebands that anyone uses, other than amateur radio.

As a person who works in the Computing and Network services
division of a large University, I see an interesting push on
from Industry to get everything wireless as soon as possible
with little worry about security or potential interference issues.

Perhaps most of us have heard of the activity called war-chalking,
in large cities, like London, England and Washington D.C., where people
roam the business districts of these cities with their laptop and wireless
ethernet receivers looking for free network connections. The fall-out for
the average listening enthusiast is the ever increasing cacophony of
digital noise that will pervade the broadcast bands, particularly in the
U.S. of A. where bands are not really allocated but bought in auction
by the highest bidder.

In Victoria, B.C., Canada, one can cruise around in their car whilst
tuning the medium-wave broadcast band and listen to variety of whoops
and swoops as one passes through various neighborhoods.

Progress is a wonderful thing!
