my McGrath, Alaska listening post back on Thursday November 19th At 908pm
AK/808pm HI/1008pm pacific time, using my CC Skywave and DeBeock FSL Loop

The signal is pretty good for 20-30 seconds, fades down then it picks back up
at about 2 minutes 17 seconds during this “Adventures In Odyssey” episode. The
station is owned by King’s Cathedral Church Of Maui.

I remember logging KZPA years ago. One night they were topping CJVI, if I

Some of you either figured out what was up or I told you directly for one
reason or another

I’m now the program director for KSKO-FM 89.5 McGrath, Alaska.
90 watts at -81 feet. The transmit antenna is the cross shaped 2 bay Scala FMO
dipole at the very top and that yellow dish just below it is the STL for the
now defunct KSKO 870, which was 10kw non directional full time.
The tower still stands even though the AM has been off for 5 years. Space is
leased to GCI for cell phone service on the old AM tower 2 miles south of town,
and one of the reasons the AM went off and was replaced with low power FM
repeaters is because the AM was (and now cell is) generator powered, at $5-6 a
gallon.
What spelled the end of the AM was back in 2013 or so when the barge couldn’t
make it up river and gas ballooned to $8.50 a gallon.
The class D repeaters KSKO has are in about half a dozen other villages fed by
Barix boxes and satellite internet.
Yes, milk, fruits/veggies and stuff is as expensive up here as you think. Yes
it’s cold. I am still doing my other radio jobs via remote voicetracking, I'll
continue Afternoons on Hits 106 KLMI Laramie, WY... I'll continue Sunday
afternoons on WHGM Gold in MAryland and overnights on Local Radio Networks 24/7
Classic Country format.

I have my icom 746pro and a longwire, a DXE Preamp, an Emtech ZM2 tuner and I
have a loop on the way from Doxytronics for my DXing. I eventually plan on
getting an SDR connected to the internet set up out here.

Re: [HCDX] [NRC-AM] AM DX Report 12/26

2016-12-26 Thread Patrick Martin
Paul,

Brings back more memories, as one of mt first Australian log & QSL
back in 1965 was 4RO Rockhampton, then on 1000 kHz with 2KW. I
relogged and QSL'd them on 990 years later from here.

4QD 1550 was also common. It looks like a lot of the same DX is
available from the 49th state.

AFN 810 has been logged and QSL'd here, but not as common now. 648
Okinawa is easier. They used to boom into Seward AK on 1550 in the
60s. AFN Taiwan 1560 was common too.

Re: [HCDX] [NRC-AM] KLAM 1450 and KVAK 1230

2016-12-16 Thread Patrick Martin
Paul,

It brings back memories on when I lived in Seward in the 60s. The old KIBH
Seward was on 1340 with 250w. In 1964, the station was destroyed in the
March 27th Quake. But KLAM (CLAM) was okay and on from 5:30 AM to 9:30 AM
and 5PM to 10PM, Monday through Saturday, off Sunday. Their ground wave
signal at over 125 miles, over water was pretty good in those days. I even
got a QSL letter from them. Long before there was a station in Valdez.

Re: [HCDX] [NRC-AM] ABC To End Shortwave Transmissions!

2016-12-05 Thread Patrick Martin
It also does not surprise me. So many SW stations have shut down. Many
can stream the service anyway. Where we used to have SW stations like
the BBC, now we have BBC World on cable, satellite, & streaming. We
used to have Radio Moscow, now the TV Service Russia Today, DW, now
DWTV, and the list goes on. TRT (Turkey) just launched their 24/7
International News TV that streams. Scratching and fading reception
from 40 years ago is now being replaced by crystal clear streaming,
often in HD and Stereo. Of course not all have access to streaming,
but a lot of the world does.

Re: [HCDX] [NRC-AM] AFN 1224kHz

2016-11-18 Thread Patrick Martin
Yes, indeed. I have heard this one through the years here on the
coast. First logged and QSL'd on 1220 Khz in 1969, a nice verie
letter. Then in the 80s on a photo postcard verie on 1224 kHz. Has
been only 1 KW. since I first logged them.

Re: [HCDX] QSL Report for Al Muick, Week ending

2013-06-15 Thread Patrick Martin
Al,

Good going with your Hong Kong MW QSL. I have a lot of Chinese QSLs on
MW and some were tough to QSL. The RTHK on 783 kHz was easy to QSL on
the first try with a cassette tape back in the 90s. But Metro Broadcast
1044 was a toughie. It took a phone call to te CE to get the QSL. Then I
found out the CE was new there, just moved from Hawaii to Hong Hong. But
it took a year that time. Some are tough to get, but those are the
jewels of the hobby.

who knows? Maybe he never saw my earlier reports. I have heard that more

are using aKinstar system of 4 poles that are 70 feet tall, instead of
their 200 foot tower. Kintronics recently got FCC approval on this
tower arrangement, but ours was the first commercial tower ever

[HCDX] UNID Slavak language on 855 khz

2009-10-07 Thread Patrick Martin
Greetings,

We are experiencing some excellent over the pole European conditions on
MW. Tonight around 0200 UTC (Oct 09), I heard a station on 855 khz
running a Slavak language program. Romania is listed as Network 1, but I
would guess Romanian. There is a 50 KW Russian listed, but I would be
surprised if that was it. Does any European DXer have an idea what I
heard? I do have a tape of it.
Thanks.

[HCDX] New MW QSL

2008-12-16 Thread Patrick Martin
1350JOERJapan, Horoshima, after about a year and two months and
2 f/ups, I finally got my QSL from JOER, RCC. For some reason, this one
was slow to receive. Most JJ stations are excellent fast QSLers. With
this, I have once again 100% reply of JJ stations. As usual, this is
another really nice full color QSL card with photo on the tower. No V/S,
but date time, station, etc are all on the card with Confirmed Your
Report!. QSL no. US001 also typed on the back. Address: 21-3
Moto-machi, Naka-ku, Hiroshima 730-6504, Japan. Also sent program
schedule in Japanese. Japan QSL :#113. MW QSL #3001. I am really
pleased with this one. It is always special to get a new QSL from Japan.

[HCDX] QSL # 3,000-KFBX 970

2008-11-17 Thread Patrick Martin
After rearly 44 years of QSLing (Feb 65 to now), I have reached a
milestone of 3,000 MW QSLs from 95 countries. The one received in
today's mail is another jewell. It made my day.

970KFBX AK, Fairbanks, received a very nice QSL card NewsRadio
970 in blue and KFBX is yellow lettering. Under that in black
lettering Fairbanks Alaska USAand 970 kHz AM 10,000 watts.
Also enclosed was a nice letter on KFBX letterheard. in 358d V/S: Scott
Diseth, C.E.. Mentioning, they rarely get reports from the Lower 48.
Address: KFBX, Clear Channel Radio, 546 9th Avenue, Fairbanks AK
99701. Alaska QSL #60, MW QSL 3,000. (PM-OR)

I had given up on this one, as the report was tentative and the CD left
a lot to be desired quality-wise. No ID, but I did have spot for a Car
Dealer with the phone prefix, so I knew it was KFBX. I am sure happy
with this one.

Patrick

[HCDX] New MW QSL (KPTQ)

[HCDX] Repairing the beverage

2008-02-10 Thread Patrick Martin
Greetngs,

After our storms this Winter, especially the big one in early December,
the Eastern beverage got busted up and it took me several weeks to
finally get it back up. It was too cold and wet to solder the splices so
I just twisted the splices and taped then up for the time being. I got
out yesterday and soldered two splices, as we were up into the 50s F, so
my little butane soldering pencil worked okey, but there was a wind, so
keeping it lit was not always easy. I was thinking of buying another 250
feet of outdoor extention cord to give me 500 feet total. With that, I
would have enough to reach the other splices that aren't soldered on the
beverage. I have a Radio Shack soldering gun (100/140 watts). Would the
soldering gun work running it through that much extention cord? If so,
would it harm the transformer in the gun? I fiqure a A/C soldering
pencil would not be harmed as there is no tranformer, but I don't have
A/C soldering pencil that has much wattage. The gun would work better.
With a pencil, if the voltage dropped too low the pencil would not get
hot enough, but with the transforer in the gun, I have no clue. Does
anyone know? If running 500 feet of extention cord would work, I will go
buy another 250 feet. I have run the soldering gun through 200 feet of
cord and that worked ok. I also have a deep cycle 12V battery I could
use with an 120v inverter, but thing weighs 70 pounds and not that easy
to carry. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Patrick

[HCDX] New Copper Ground Rods

2008-02-05 Thread Patrick Martin
I installed the separate two 5 foot copper pipes for ground rods for the
1500' beverage, so I have a separate ground for the two matching
transformers for the SW EWE and beverage. With how wet our soil is and
the rods are all sitting in water, I am getting a conductivity between
all of the ground rods in the yard, almost like a direct short. I guess
the story is true that water conducts electricity just fine. So, I have
no idea if using the separate rods really makes that much difference.
The directivity of the beverage is a bit different on certain
frequencies, but over all there is little difference. Maybe I might
notice a difference come Summer with less moisture in the ground. The
field next door has 2-4 feet of water in it and the copper pipes all go
down to below that level.

[HCDX] More ground rods

2008-02-03 Thread Patrick Martin
Since the ground for the matching transformers for both the SW EWE and
the 1500' beverage have been tied together since the beginning, I
decided it was time I separate them. I bought 2 10 foot 1/2 copper
piping today ($12.50 each) and I cut them into 4 pieces of 5 foot
sections. So tomorrow I will put in a new ground near the other for the
beverage. It will be interesting to note if it makes any difference. I
think I will try 2 sections first. I may use the other 2 pieces for a
ground for the new vertical I plan to install.

Lithuania or Estonia would be very likely in Jan 1967 from Seward AK as
it is basically a darkness path (at least a lot of it), but something

time, I was 17 years old and I knew nothing about propagation. I was
using a Norelco 17 transistor $125 portable that did amazingly well on
splits. Of course in those days, the whole state of Alaska had 18
stations and Seward had only a 50 watter on 1490 using a longwire
antenna, so QRM was very low.

[HCDX] Static noise issue

2007-12-20 Thread Patrick Martin
Greetings,

In the last couple of days, a noise issue has developed. When I get
heavy rain, I hear an noise like rubbing two pieces of metal together
within the house. a scratching/scraping noise. If I take a portable
outside, it seems to go away the farther I get from the house. I kicked
the circuit breakers off and it does not do anything. It doesn't do it
everytime it rains, but most of the time a heavy shower hits. True I
have a metal roof, but the wind does seem to cause the noise. But rain
hitting something does. It is really noticeable on a portable, and in
the back of the house closer to my antennas, but not on the R8 near the
front of the house as much. Of course the R8 is well grounded. The
electric frence was arcing the other day, and I fixed that. I even shook
the fence during the heavy rain and it did nothing. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

[HCDX] Static noise update

2007-12-20 Thread Patrick Martin
Greetings,

Well, I just came back in and it could be coming from anywhere I guess.
I checked some things out, the metal downspouts of the gutter and I
found one loose and replaced the screws. Plus where the gas lines go
under the house, I wiggle those and I hear a scratching noise against
the metal. I smell no gas though, but they are hitting against
something, so will have the gas company check them and then maybe
ground the pipes going under the house, but they are already grounded
coming out of the ground. But I poured a glass of water on the pipes and
no noise from that. It is lightly raining now and no noise noted, so I
am still in the dark.I did check all of my antennas too. Nthing noted
there. But anything is possible.
