[DX-CHAT] FCC 60 Meters
USA's Federal Communications Commission released a REPORT AND ORDER on November 18, 2011 with new 5MHz rules for the Amateur Radio Service. Effective date: 30 days after publication in the Federal Register. The FCC adopted the use of the name "60 meter band", to refer to 5MHz amateur radio in the frequency range 5330.5-5406.4 kHz, but USA hams are still only allowed to transmit on 5 specific channels in the band. The FCC changed the rules to allow: Phone (Upper Sideband), RTTY, Data, and CW; with specific limitations on the use of these modes. Amateur radio is a "secondary user" in this band, and must not cause harmful interference to other services! Amateur Radio Service must accept interference from other primary services and other nations services. Operators transmitting data or RTTY must exercise care to limit the length of transmission so as to avoid causing harmful interference to US Government stations. New 60 meter band 5MHz Channel List: General, Advanced, or Amateur Extra Class license only. Suppressed Carrier VFO Dial freq 5330.5 kHz USB (center of channel = 5332.0) 5346.5 kHz USB (center of channel = 5348.0) 5357.0 kHz USB (center of channel = 5358.5) New! 5371.5 kHz USB (center of channel = 5373.0) 5403.5 kHz USB (center of channel = 5405.0) Note: FCC deleted the channel at 5366.5 USB (center=5368.0) and "replaced" it with channel 5357.0 kHz USB (center=5358.5) The maximum allowed power level is now 100Watts PEP (ERP) effective radiated power referenced to a dipole. If another type of antenna is used, the station licensee must maintain a record of either the antenna manufacturer's data on the antenna gain or calculations of the antenna gain. Upper SideBand Phone, Data, or RTTY transmissions may use dial (VFO) USB suppressed carrier frequency at 1.5kHz below the center of the channel. Transmissions must not exceed the 2.8kHz bandwidth channel. RTTY modes such as PSK31 must not exceed 60Hz necessary bandwidth. Data modes must not exceed 2.8kHz bandwidth. CW bandwidth must not exceed 150Hz bandwidth and the CW frequency should be at the center of the channel. Data stations operating under section § 97.221 automatically controlled digital station, are not allowed on these 5MHz channels. [DX-CHAT] Fwd: [MFDXA] JOINT PRESS RELEASE from DXpedition leaders/teams re: PJ operations Band Plan for 10-10-10
The following Joint Press Release for the upcoming PJ 10/10/10 activities may be sent to your friends, clubs and other reflectors. 73 Bernie, W3UR -- <http://www.dailydx.com/trial.htm>http://www.dailydx.com/trial.htm Date: Sept. 30, 2010 From: DXpedition leaders/teams participating in DXpeditions to new DXCC entities beginning 10-10-10 To: ALL interested DXers worldwide Due to the unprecedented number of potential new DXCC entities and numerous planned DXpeditions commencing 10-10-10, we felt it was prudent to establish a Band Plan to try to minimize interference between DXpeditions and their pileups. The following Band Plan is the result of discussions that have been ongoing for several weeks. It is a Planhowever, without the cooperation of DXers, the plan will not work. It is extremely important that DXers call DXpeditions only within the specified frequency ranges. If you do not, you will not work the station you are calling and you will likely interfere with another DXpedition on another Island. This will require cooperation and discipline. Success of this plan also requires that DXers help spread the information about the Band Plan to their fellow DXers and DX Clubs. WE NEED YOUR HELP! But if we work together, we will be able to get many, many DXers into our logs! Thanks for your cooperation! [DX-CHAT] FW: DX Convention Survey
For more than 60 years the NCDXC and SCDXC have tirelessly sponsored one of the most popular conventions for DXers and Contesters, the International DX Convention held in Visalia, CA. I have been a regular attendee for more than 30 years and hope to attend for another 30 years. The unofficial, unsolicited, non-binding survey below is being conducted by K5RC and N7TR for only one purpose; to give the sponsors a set of data that accurately represents the current "Voice of the Customer." This is not a movement to "change" anything, just to provide data for what is being done well and what might be improved. Having chaired ham conventions for 7 years, including the 1983 ARRL National, I am aware that the committees seldom get objective input and more often get complaints from a vocal minority that may not accurately reflect the consensus. Please participate in the survey if you have been to the IDXC in the past or would attend "if" something were different. Please pass this email and survey to any and all DXers and Contesters you may know. RESPONSE DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 28, 2010. CLICK HERE TO TAKE THE SURVEY: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/C65BS9W Your input will remain anonymous. Thanks! [DX-CHAT] DX Summit soon ready for 2-way communications
DX SUMMIT SOON READY FOR 2-WAY COMMUNICATION Helsinki July 1, 2009 DX SUMMIT SOON READY FOR 2-WAY COMMUNICATION WITH OVER 110.000 MONTHLY USERS <http://www.dxsummit.fi/dxspots.aspx>www.dxsummit.fi/dxspots.aspx The Radio Arcala DX Summit portal is celebrating the milestone of one million monthly hits over a course of several months and more than 110.000 people spending an average of 35 minutes on the site daily. The top five nations using the service are as follows:USA (28.5%) followed by Germany, United Kingdom, Italy and Japan. In total, users from 170 DXCC countries have entered the service portal. With new visits approaching 19% during the month of May, an increase of users is quite evident. In the process of making the DX Summit service more focused on younger user segments and non-amateur radio population, two features have been added recently. Each spotting and spotted callsign is automatically linked to <http://QRZ.COM>QRZ.COM, providing a more human link to the personal profiles of people and to their pictures. Just click the callsigns and you will automatically enter the relevant <http://QRZ.COM>QRZ.COM page. Additionally, each line carries the name of the DXCCcountry spotted. In a few months time, custom selected filters will be provided to the public allowing users to receive personalized spots that they would like to receive. While initially the selected spots will be sent to your personal email address, the ultimate aim is to offer an SMS (short message service) option to DX Summit users. This service is a non-profit exercise for Radio Arcala, OH8X but we are pleased to recognize Yasme Foundation and Nokia Corporation for their support of further development and defrayment of operating expenses of the portal. As the servers are in the hands of a professional service provider in the United States, some interruptions are recorded and changing the service provider is in process. Also, a Help Desk for regular users and for S/W developers is being set up. Here it is suggested that DX Summit open a channel for accepting voluntary donations to keep the Help Desk operational. On a trial basis, through PayPal, DX Summit accepts donations and, additionally, following a donation of 10 USD or 10 EUR, Radio Arcala will send you a full-color Radio Arcala wall calendar postpaid. This option is valid only for the months of July and <http://August.www.dxsummit.fi/donate.aspx>August.www.dxsummit.fi/donate.aspx We thank you for your support of and interest in Radio Arcala DX Summit. [DX-CHAT] Ten Tec woes & SEDCO III
FWIW: I was in Tennessee a few weeks back and decided to stay for the Ten Tec hamfest & SEDCO III. Both events were outstanding and I plan on going back next year. I've wanted to play with the Orion but there is always a crowd at the Ten Tec booth at Dayton (seems to be the only hamfest they attend) They have a store on site so on Monday I went thinking I would beat the crowd and play with the radio. I was flabbergasted... no equipment was set up. They have a display of their kits but they are in a glass case and one cannot touch or feel. The store is quite small and MFJ shared the lions amount of space. There were 3 used Ten Tec radios in the case for sale. NO radios to play with. On Friday I went to the open house and they all of their radios set up. The Orion was not set up properly and it took one of the reps a few minutes to figure why it wasn't receiving anything. They had no isolation filters so if someone was transmitting on one radio nothing could be heard on the other radios. Nice guys, nice facility but poor presentation. Based on what I saw (and several other guys I chatted with) a Ten Tec radio was not in our future. SEDCO III was well worth the trip and most informative. If you didn't go put it on your sechdule for next year. At 07:57 PM 10/24/2007, Charles Harpole wrote: Hello Paul, I am sorry to say your response is the winner of the MOST LAME CUSTOMER SERVICE RESPONSE of the year, maybe the decade. This cap blow up problem is now on its THIRD occasion, with identical symptoms, happening on Florida electrical AC power and now on a different electrical power, WITH NO lightning anywhere within sight on any of the occasions. In all cases, I monitor my AC power with a good meter all the time, and have NEVER observed power spikes upward and only the usual 5 volt dip when the air con comes on. I know micro spikes and dips can occur, but to think that such would cause a disk cermaic cap to blow up ON THE METER SHUNT BOARD, borders on stupid given THREE breaker/fuse before that, etc etc. I think this unit has a design flaw that you either do not know about or want to ignore. Further, your company should be aware of the poor reputation your customer contact history has. In my case, twice I have come close to ordering an ORION, and after a brief query with your offices, have been put off by the terse, simplistic answers. TEN TEC has some great products, but the co. should ask itself, Why is it not a major power in the ham radio field? Certainly, if you ask, I can tell you. Meanwhile, I see that I am on my own and that Ten Tec products are basically sold "as is" and rapidly become orphans in the storm. Good luck, Ten Tec will need it. [DX-CHAT] Allocations
this is plain language breakdown of new fcc report and order... you get more frequencies for phone on 75 40 and 15... but remember...this doesn't take effect until 30 days after its published in federal register...ARRL will put out the word... The FCC has: + expanded the phone sub bands in the 75 and 40 meter bands; + permitted auxiliary stations to transmit on portions of the 2 meter band; + permitted the use of spread spectrum on 222-225 MHz; + permitted amateurs to re transmit communications from the International Space Station; + permitted amateur licensees to designate a specific Amateur Radio club to receive their call sign in memoriam; + prohibited an applicant from filing more than one application for a specific vanity call sign; + eliminated certain restrictions on equipment manufacturers; + permitted Amateur Radio stations in Alaska and surrounding waters more flexibility in providing emergency communications; + clarified that ''amateur stations may, at all times and on all frequencies authorized to the control operator, make transmissions necessary to meet essential communication needs and to facilitate relief actions''; + deleted the frequency bands and segments specified for RACES stations; and + deleted the requirement for public announcement of test locations and times. In addition, the FCC took several other miscellaneous actions. In ''refarming'' the frequencies currently authorized to Novice and Technician Plus licensees, the Commission increased the voice segments for General, Advanced and Amateur Extra licensees. On 75 meters, Generals will be able to use voice from 3800-4000 kHz, an increase of 50 kHz. Advanced class licensees will be able to use voice from 3700-4000, an increase of 75 kHz, and Amateur Extras will be able to use voice from 3600 to 4000 kHz, a generous increase of 150 kHz. On 40 meters, Advanced and Extra Class licensees will be able to use voice from 7125-7300 kHz, an increase of 25 kHz. General class licensees will be able to use voice on 7175-7300 kHz, an increase of 50 kHz. On 15 meters, General class operators will have phone privileges on 21275-21450 kHz, an increase of 25 kHz. ARRL President Joel Harrison, W5ZN, expressed the ARRL's gratitude to the FCC Commissioners in a letter dated October 11: ''On behalf of the ARRL and the Commission's licensees in the Amateur Radio Service I want to express appreciation for your release yesterday of the Report and Order in WT Docket 04-140 (FCC 06-149) amending Part 97 of the Commission's Rules. The Commission's action in clearing this pending proceeding will assist the Amateur Radio Service in meeting its objectives, particularly with regard to providing emergency and public service communications.'' The changes will go into effect 30 days after the R&O is published in the Federal Register. Re: [DX-CHAT] [TowerTalk] insulating oil (also PCB issues) was Re: HN-31 Heathkit Dummy Load
ates cradle to grave liability for those materials. Cradle to grave liability comes from the practice back in the bad, old days, of hazmat disposal by hiring a guy with a tanker to drive down the road with the valve "accidentally on purpose" cracked. The waste generator says: "We transferred it to our (now-out-of-business with no assets) hazmat hauler" {No surprise that this kind of thing was a big money maker for organized crime, eh?} NOBODY who deals with this stuff on any large scale wants the prospect of being the "bad guy" in the next Erin Brockovich style movie. So, they tend to take a VERY conservative view of handling. You want to store a piece of electrical equipment with "oil" in it? Either you have ironclad documentation showing it was made recently OR you have concrete pads with berms, absorbtion blankets, hazmat spill procedures, etc., etc., etc. This tends to foster a sort of "PCBs are the devil incarnate" sort of paranoia. The actual hazard is quite low, the potential legal and publicity exposure is HUGE (particularly if you have assets, and the fickle finger of fate points at you). The upshot is: Get your oil from somewhere "known good", preferably in brand new containers. Keep the records.(put them in a plastic bag and tape it to the dummy load) Somewhere down the road, someone might want to dispose of your dummy load, and life is much easier if you can prove it's nice safe oil. By the way, there are a couple quick and dirty tests: oil floats on water, askarel sinks. A piece of paper soaked in oil burns (real well), a piece of paper soaked in askarel doesn't burn very well, if at all. These tests won't tell you, though, whether you've got one of those horrible PCB contaminated equipment refilled with oil situations. Jim, W6RMK.. Re: [DX-CHAT] [TowerTalk] HN-31 Heathkit Dummy Load
According to the manual the HN-31 is rated at 1kw. Duty cycle is 10 minutes using transformer oil & about 2 minutes using mineral oil Check with your local power company. If you go to the facility that handles the transformers you can usually get a fill up at no charge. I don't know if it has transformer oil or Mineral Oil in it. Will it handle 1500W on a 50% duty cycle for a short time?? Does anyone know where I can buy transformer oil, or has OSHA outlawed it by now?? Re: [DX-CHAT] Hamvention: Forums Locations
Parking is difficult enough at the Hamvention. Requiring you to shelp to your car in plenty of time to get to it, find and drive to the off site location, find a place to park then get back to the Hara and find another (pay again) parking spot is absurd! As an exhibitor at numerous consumer & trade events, All exhibitors find it objectionable to have off site meetings that require attendees to leave for hours. Also, as an exhibitor, in the event that I could take time to attend a forum, especially with one that I was directly involved with, taking it off site eliminates me from attending. ALL activities need to be under one roof. HARA needs work and a lot of it. Better yet, Hamvention needs professional help at another location. Everything on the Tower Talk reflector has been positive. Not one single user is disappointed or sorry they switched. I received this from Tony today. Dear Jack, A concourse of circumstances are to blame, not the least of which is the delay in printing of new blank cards, which are now in Fiji while I'm here in Tahiti. It will take some time for them to be sent back here, so I'm afraid all will have to be patient a little longer and I sincerely apologize. There is no need to re-QSL at this stage, as there are over 2000 cards still to be answered. kind regards, VY 73 Tony (3D2AG, FO5RK) Jack Hartley K4WSB ARRL - QCWA - OOTC http://www.ultimatehat.com 10% discount to fellow Hams Put your call on the order Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org

Hello: I made a contact with T53UN on 29MAY92; the operator was Kent/WB8HWO. This contact was submitted to ARRL and accepted for DXCC purposes. On 05JUN92 I made a second contact with T53UN. On 31MAY93 and 02JUN93 I made a contacts with T5/DL1VJ. I did not need to submit these and, consequently, do not know whether or not they are accepted for DXCC purposes. [DX-CHAT] A New Concept in Ham Maps
Tim posted this on TowerTalk. It's very well done. Thought you all might be interested. A New Concept in Ham Maps People might be interested to see a new type of Ham Map, now available for free on my website. It will be of use to all amateurs, whether HF or VHF based. The problem with ordinary web-based maps is that there is either too little or too much information on the screen. I have just completed a map of Europe, the first in a series of Overlay Maps, where YOU get to choose the amount of information you have on display. The following overlays are available: Country Outlines, CQ Zones, ITU Zones, Time Zones, Grid Locators, Country Names, Capital Cities, Prefixes, Flags. You can chose which overlays are on display, the order they are displayed in, and which one is on the top. The map can be saved in the normal manner (File>Save As) for viewing off-line, and it can be printed out with what ever overlays are active. As the page is graphics-intensive (220kB) it takes approximately 30 seconds to load with a 56kB modem, or 1 minute with a 28.2Kb modem. A pre-loader page is provided as an entry point. The address is http://www.qsl.net/ei8ic/grids/euro/preload.html Or it can be accessed through the normal menu on my website. IMPORTANT: THE MAP REQUIRES JAVASCRIPT TO BE ENABLED ON YOUR BROWSER. IF YOU HAVE JAVASCRIPT TURNED OFF, IT WON'T WORK. I welcome any comments or suggestions for other maps. 73s Tim EI8Ic www.qsl.net/ei8ic/ HF and Budget Contesting Information Site. More maps in this series will be added as time and resources allow. It takes me about a week to make the map and its overlays. If you would like to sponsor a map in this series, order a similar map of a particular area, or need any other graphics processing or web-design ($80/page), please contact me.
