Re: [DX-CHAT] Don't you hate when guys use the Cluster for DXped operating suggestions?

2007-01-05 Thread DAVE WHITE
Errr...big deal. So what?

If you don't like it, switch the thing off.

What do you do if something comes on the TV that you don't like? Do you sit
there getting angry? Durr?

Ranks right up there with a handful who make repeated ads on the cluster for
their particular web sites or services. Irritating.

So I'm sitting across the room in the shack, doing something else, then
some nimrod does this:
DX de N4PN: 1834.0 1A4A Hw about 160m - Condx good!
0124Z GA
and gets me to run across the room after DX4WIN announces it to see
what's going on. I see it's a false alarm and go back to whatever else
I was doing...

I'd start blocking individual spotters who do this, but there are too
many of them :.(

2007-01-05 Thread N4BAA - Jose Castillo

Dave,

The TV doesn't cause DX filters to go off for the global masses of Ham
Ops.
Would you get upset if you "were" watching your favorite tv show and
your neighbor had a remote and kept changing it on you?
That is what it is like...Those who do not utilize software to announce
DX activities do not understand this issue.

It is a courtesy to utilize DX Clusters for ANNOUNCING DX...Not
anything else. If someone chooses to utilize DX Clusters for anything
else...they are making a conscious decision to NOT be a good operator.
It is that simple. And if I notice this practice going on and I don't
say something...then I am as guilty as the guy doing it.

2007-01-05 Thread Tom Anderson
Chances are the DX will never even see the spot, so why post it?. When
I was in C9 this summer there was just one location in Bilene,
Mozambique that had internet access we knew about or could use and it
was a ways from the hotel where we operated. We used it to communicate
with our families for almost 3 weeks, not keep up with what folks were
wanting us to do on cluster spots.
Besides while we were grateful to have it, it did cost us 1 South
African Rand per minute or $1 U.S. every 7 minutes, it was much slower
than stateside dialup although it was billed as DSL. I didn't even read
what folks said on DXscape until after I got back and did a search on C9
spots being posted and comments.

RE: [DX-CHAT] Don't you hate when guys use the Cluster for DXped operating suggestions?

2007-01-05 Thread Ron Notarius W3WN
Because it's a misuse of the system. When I choose to monitor a packet
cluster, I'm interested in seeing who's QRV and what bands are open to
where; gives me some good starting points (and some ideas of where to avoid
pileups).

I am not monitoring the cluster to get ads every five minutes about another
cluster web site (with a URL that doesn't work to boot). That's a misuse of
the ANNOUNCE function. So I usually shut getting ANNOUNCEments off and
stick to spots.

Misuse of announcements ranks right up there with all of the spam merchants
hawking get rich quick schemes, diet pills that only serve to fatten the
merchant's wallets, and ads of a rather personal nature regarding bodily
appendages and useage thereof. In fact, I wouldn't at all object to calling
it cluster spam

And... if there's something on the boobus toobus that I don't care for, I
can change the channel to another program. But there's only one packet
network these days, and I feel it is improper that I have to stop using it
because others abuse it.
