operate, or something like one or the other committed to paper). Without
said paperwork, I strongly suspect that it will be equally difficult to get
approval for said operation at the DXCC, though of course I could be wrong!
Verbal permission won't be enough (ala 7O1YGF), and permission will have to
come from the central government, not local authorities (ala 7O1A). That's
just the way it is.
Now, one may argue, and argue well, that the DXCC rules on this are

Sometimes I've felt that way, too. Part of the reason I've become so

Hi,

Well, for what it is worth here is my thoughts. I am sitting at 325 and of the 10 I have left, several (3 or 4) have "no likely chance" of operations. Why keep them on the list? If a country does not allow activity from an entity I would like to see them go off the 'active' list. However, I do remember a brief operation from Yemen just last year - and I missed that one too.

This could be handled by starting an 'inactive' list and then using the active list to determine honor roll, etc. I am not just complaining but really wonder why an entity would be keeping someone from 'top of the honor roll' when there is no possibility of operations from there. If a legit operation started the entity could be moved back to the active list. Just an idea - probably full of holes but just an idea.

It would require some bugs to work out but I think it could happen. As for me, I have hopes that the 3C0 dx-pedition will put me on honor roll and 'top of the honor roll' is a long way off :-).

I love the turn my original post has taken.

I am not complaining that I have been chasing DX for 47 years and have yet
to get to the top. I am just wondering if I should retire from work and

stay the course for the next few years with a fairly competitive station

I am almost sorry that I opted to return to school for my law degree at age
50+ when the GOOD operation was on in ~1990. I didn't even know it was on

I sincerely believe the DXCC should require a massive operational effort to
achieve!

The following sums up what is really important in life-

Golf balls, Pebbles Sand
A professor stood before his Philosophy 101 class and
had some items in front of him. When the class began,
wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty
mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They
 agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a jar of pebbles and
 poured them into the jar.

He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course,
rolled into the open spaces between the golf balls. He
then asked the students again if the
jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it
into the jar and of course the sand filled up
everything else. He asked once more if the
jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous yes.

The professor then produced two cans of beer from
under the table and proceeded to pour the entire
contents into the jar, effectively filling
the empty space between the grains of sand. The
 students laughed.

Now, said the professor, as the laughter subsided,
I want you to recognize that this jar represents your
life. The golf balls are the
important things -- your family, your partner, your
health, your children, your faith, your friends, your
favorite passions -- things that if everything else
was lost and only they remained, your life would still
 be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter, like
your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else -- the small
stuff.

If you put the sand into the jar first, he
continued, there is no room for the pebbles or the
golf balls. The same goes for your life. If you
spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you
will never have room for the things that are important
to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical
to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time
to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. Play another 18.

There will always be time to go to work, clean the
house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal. Take
care of the golf balls first -- the
things that really matter. Set your priorities. The
rest is just sand. One of the students raised her
hand and inquired what the beer represented.

The professor smiled. I'm glad you asked. It just
goes to show you that no matter how full your life may
seem, there's always room for a couple of beers.

I dread the day when I get them all. Nothing to look forward to. It
kind of scares me. Sitting here at 330 waiting for 3Y/B, A5, BS7, FR/J

had all of them except VU7A and FR/J. I guess all that inconvenience
was worth something!

[DX-CHAT] Yemen and other delights

2003-09-02 Thread Mike(W5UC) Kathy(K5MWH) Watson

Gentlemen, please allow me to repeat something I said when this came up
the last time:

I also have been reading most of this thread with limited
interest, and Tony said it all. Yes, working them all is probably a
little more important to me than Tony. I need BS7, VU4, E3, and ZL9. At
almost 65, I Might have a shot at the last 2. However, if I don't work
them all, so be it. I had my chances at the last two in 1999 and wasn't
paying attention, and in my lifetime I have had a shot at all four. Shame
on me, not the system.

Quit whining and leave the system alone. It has it's problems, but don't
we all? It has served us well since I started chasing DX in 1958.
Drop your drawers, get your shorts out of a wad, and wait like the rest
of us.

[DX-CHAT] Yemen

2003-09-01 Thread Dean Norris
What would you assembled masses consider the probability (educated
guessSWAG??) that Yemen, 7O, will be on the air in the next year. I am
rapidly approaching retirement and me the missus are looking at buying a
motor home and traveling until we decide not to travel any more.

Doing so will likely result in selling the home and getting rid of the
tower/beam, a few hundred pounds of 'stuff' and maybe the IC756ProII OR the
706 MkII.

Anyway, since the last country I need to make Top 'o d' Roll is the elusive
7), I wonder if I should start selling off now or wait a while for a
possible opportunity.

Ideas?

BTW, I have learned one or two things recently...

1) Kids don't think it is funny at all when you tell them that you plan to
travel until you are unable to continue and then you will pull up in front
of their house and say, Here I am!

2) Be kind to your kids because they determine which nursing home you will
die in!

Here's a better question. Which country will be on the air first-Yemen
or the Peoples' Democratic Republic of Korea? And within ten years, too.
Anyone taking Las Vegas odds on these?
