Desktop team NAKed maintaining it, and it looks like reverse-
dependencies would need changes (and for one, having written the nm-
applet patch, I rather this be removed to use standard status icon code
than appindicators). Setting to Incomplete.
If this needs to be in main to support software,
nothing to do here for 18.10

Are they 100% compatible? Can you switch between both without loosing
any functionality? Will end user notice switch?

It was pointed some cycles ago that going with an hostile fork and
making it incompatible with the existing implementation would complicate
any transition and the adoption of the new stack, seems that's where we

A ping from one of the upstream maintainers of Ayatana Indicators.
For Debian I maintain this wiki page that documents the transition

@khurshid-alam, the problem is stuff in main that depends on ayatana,
and can't migrate until the archive is self-consistent.
I'm not asking to transition universe to ayatana (it can take all the
time needed, if somebody does the work), but rather asking to move
ayatana to main and appindicator
Appindicator is dead ? Since when? Ubuntu and all other variants use it.
Unity uses it. I fear deprecating libappindicator in favor of
libayatana-appindicator won't be easy task in unity and Gnome. In-fact
it's a huge task for Unity. But since both library can co-exist I don't
really see a problem
What is difference between libappindicator and libayatana-appindicator?

I'm subscribing also “Indicator Applet Developers” team so they can
provide some inputs on this if they want (and maybe subscribe to this
new one?)
