[Dx4win] Can't resist

2008-01-07 Thread Bill Clark
I have been a Dx4win user for over ten years. Don't have the exact date of
the change, but I think it was very early in the life of Dx4win. Made the
change to Dx4win because of very poor and expensive service on two other
logging programs.
Now running version 7.03.16. Have found the program kinda like Timex- just
keeps on tickin!!
Thanks to Paul, Steve and Jim.

Hi Folks,

I just tested DX4WIN 7.02 and did not run across the country editor bug when
adding FJ/St. Barthelemy.

For anyone who *did* have log data corruption, were ANY of you using a version
of DX4WIN *other than* 7.03?

Hi all.

I have read about so many problems adding an entity to the DX4WIN, that I
think necessary to recall a word nobody should forget: BACKUP.

1) Before making any changes in the databases, make a backup copy of your
log files (*.dxl), the country file (dx4win.cty) and the configuration file
(dx4win.cfg). If anything goes bad, recover the backed up files and the
problem is gone.

2) Do not press Alt-S (to save the log) unless you are sure it is ok (check
states/counties information, etc.). If something is bad, re-load the log
(File Open...). But doing this will lose any contact added after the
latest save.

By the way, I added FJ without any trouble (I had not to recover the backed
up files... hi). I proceeded as follow:

1) Close the log. You cannot access the country database with the log
open.

2) Click on File Databases Country. Go to St. Martin (Country Find
St. Martin) and check that the main prefix is not FJ (should be FS). If
you have to change the main prefix, Click on Country Update.

3) Click on Mapping and, in the mapping prefixes list, add an end date for
FJ. It must be the same start date for St. Barthelemy. Click on Mapping
Update.

5) Click on Country Add. Write down all the details for the new entity
(FJ, Saint Barthelemy, etc.). Make sure Has states = N. After all data
is ok, click on Country Update.

6) Clic on Mapping Add. Add the FJ prefix, including the zone and the
start date. Click on Mapping Update.

7) Click on File Check for errors. It should only show one line End of
error listing. If some error is found, correct it before exiting.

8) After all is ok, click on File Save changes and Exit. If you cannot
correct the errors, click on Cancel Changes and Exit, and look for help.

9) Open the log. Check the new entity addind a dummy QSO with a FJ call
with a date BEFORE the start date for St. Barthelemy. It should be logged
as St. Martin. Now add another QSO with a FJ call with the start date
for St. Barthelemy. It should log as St. Barthelemy. If all is ok, delete
the dummy QSOs and and check some USA QSOs to verify that the State and
County is unharmed. If anything is wrong, DON'T PRESS ALT-S. Close the
program (without saving the log), reopen it and recheck the log.

10) If something is still bad, recover the backed up files and start all
from the beginning.

Good luck!

[Dx4win] Hamcall CD-Rom

2006-09-08 Thread Bill Clark

Buckmaster works fine-but on foreign calls, instead of showing the country name
as part of the mailing address it shows the grid
ex:

OSTROVITYANOVA 19/22, 142
Moscow, ^ 117437
Grid: KO85SS

I am told this is a problew with DX4win but I don't know which it is.

[Dx4win] Setting Callsign font to Bold when printing labels

2005-12-27 Thread Bill Clark

Jerry, changed my call header to the bold font and printed some labels. Printed
in bold font OK. When I went back to File-Database-Labels, the bold was no
longer highlighted but it was printing the bold font OK. I went thru the
exercise and exited the program and restarted, still printed bold header font
even tho it was not highlighted.
I get what I select and do all the OK's on, but when you check the thing will
show regular-but it is printing the bold font here . Looks like a small hiccup
but the selected font is being printed here.

Subject: [Dx4win] Setting Callsign font to Bold when printing labels

In DX4WIN 7.01 (also 6.04) I am unable to permanently set the Callsign
font to Bold when printing labels. I am using the Custom1 label name
accessed via FileDatabasesLabels. After selecting the Callsign font
area I can set the font from Regular to Bold and then exit via the OK's.
If I then re-open the Label database the Bold setting has been reverted
back to Regular and was not permanently saved. During a label printing
session I can modify the Callsign font to Bold and all works well.
However, the Bold setting is not saved across printing sessions either.

Is there a method to permanently store the Callsign font Bold setting in
the label database? I have tried editing the database (I assume it to
be dx4win.lab in the Save folder) with MS Word, WordPad, and Notepad but
it does not seem to be editable by these methods.

Any ideas?

[Dx4win] PSK31 rx problem solved !!

2005-11-11 Thread Bill Clark

I finally contacted the author of the .dll used in Dx4win and Moe advised me to
see if I had the latest version of the PSK .dll file. I only recently upgraded
to 7.01 version of Dx4win and I found that I had an older version included in
the program. The version of the .dll in the program was 1.1.5.0 and the newest
was 1.1.9.0. After downloading and installing the latest version from
http://www.qsl.net/ae4jy/pskcoredll.htm
all was well. I can just about print ESP now. Heckuva deal, works great.
This solved my problem but don't know if this should be a change for everyone
or not.

Often times I've seen guys have this problem if the are using a router
between their computer and the ISP. A router is more commonly used in your
higher speed ISPs. The router has the ability to be configured to drop
connections during periods of time of being idle.

If this is your case, look into the ability to change the time out
parameters in your router.

I hope this helps.

I disagree. To require two computers, or two serial ports, or a dummyup
serial program and all that shenanigans to make it work, is not integration.

Even the PSK31 window no longer works properly. In previous versions I
could click on a call and have it copy to the QSO Call window. That, at
least, was somewhat integrated. It is broken now.

In another post someone said they could use their MFJ TNC while logging in
DX4WIN. That is what I said I did with my KAM, but that is also not
integration -- the two don't talk to each other.

[Dx4win] Disconnects

2003-10-25 Thread Bill Clark
Well, I might as well have a go at this. I now connect to clusters via
broadband wireless and do have an excellent connection as I am very near the
signal source. Previously, I used a dial up connection, a little less reliable.
Before that, two meter packet, even less reliable.
Now, I can ping the server and I never have found that was loosing any
packets. Even now, I will occasionally be disconnected, but not often. I
believe that about all disconnects are a result of web congestion, not from any
fault in DX4win. When web traffic is heavy, there will be an occasional
disconnect, but not enoiugh to be a big problem.
I think that if Paul put an automatic ping into Dx4win that the only result
would be more traffic on the web. Most of the clusters have an automatic
transmission every nine minutes anyway and if there is no web congestion, you
will not be disconnected.
I'm just thankful that the reliability is so much better than the packet days
anyway.

[Dx4win] Openning Packet Window Closes Connection

2002-07-30 Thread Bill Clark
Hi Frank, I just tried this event you described. I had not noticed but mine
sends the info in the #1 buffer when I maximize the packet screen. It's not the
bye tho, I have put my call in the first buffer. Do you have bye in the #1
buffer???

Thought I was making some
error, but now think I'm missing something...

I normally minimize the Packet Window to save screen real-estate once my
connection is up and running. From time-to-time, though, open the Window
again either to see unfiltered spots, or to re-established a lost
connection. Now, what I've noticed is that when I click the maximize
button, the Window opens, but the program sends a bye command to the
Cluster through the TNC or Telnet connection. Any idea what's going on
here?

Thanks and 73!
Frank
