Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win and USB Ports

2011-03-17 Thread Dave Hawes
Hi Byron!

I use a ByteRunner USB2-4COM-M to create 4 real COM ports from one
USB port.

http://www.byterunner.com/byterunner/product_name=USB2-4COM-M/user-
id=/password=/exchange=/exact_match=exact

I use the ByteRunner to control my radio, rotator, and power meter, with one
port left over for whatever.

The ByteRunner uses the FTDI chipset, and is fully functional for just about
anything. So, if you are happy with your peripherals, but are lacking COM
ports as I was, the USB2-4COM-M is a reasonable solution.

Re: [Dx4win] Scrolling stops in bandmap when moving to band edge

2010-10-01 Thread Dave Hawes
I reported much the same last 13Dec2009 in a post to this reflector:

2. Band map scrolling. (In this email, scrolling is meant as the way the
band map is repainted when you tune off the visible part of the map.)

a. Inconsistent scrolling - For whatever reason, I find that the band map does
not consistently scroll, that is, I can tune off the top or bottom of the
visible
portion of the map, and the red arrow just disappears and the map does not
repaint to bring the current frequency (red arrow) into visibility. When this
happens, clicking either the + or - zoom button will recenter the frequency,
and the red arrow is again visible.

b. I am not particularly fond of the way the band map scrolls as you tune.
What happens now is you tune the radio up in frequency, the red arrow
moves down the visible map until it disappears off the bottom. (See 2.a.
above for consistency issues.) Then the map repaints (or should do so) with
the current frequency at the top of a new band segment. In my opinion, this
could be improved by scrolling the window when the current frequency gets a
certain distance away from the center of the map. This way, your current
frequency is always near the center of a segment of the band, the size of the
segment being set by the + and - buttons.

I would still like to have these issues fixed in a future update to D4W.

be able to see the calls effectively, you end up needing to scroll
past the edge more often. Very frustrating!

With this ROS Mode thing flooding the system with un necessary spots the

The way I see it is the Insert (Holding) when used in either the

[Dx4win] Double spots using Alt-A

2010-04-04 Thread Dave Hawes
Good day,

I'm just doing some casual operating in the SPDX Contest, and found an
unusual DX4WIN response. I'm not using Contest Mode. I fill in the QSO
data in the Entry Window, but before hitting Enter, I hit Alt-A which graps the
callsign from the Entry Window. So far so good. However, if I hit two quick
Enters, one to send the spot and one to log the QSO, two identical spots
are sent to the Cluster. If I pause after the first Enter, and wait for the
spot to
show up in the packet window, then hit the second Enter, only a single spot is
sent to the Cluster.

Yes, I know. If it hurts, don't do it. The work around is to pause between
Enters. However, what I'm seeing should not happen.

Also, I love the Band Map, but hate the way the frequency doesn't track
properly. I've reported this before.

[Dx4win] Band Map Wish List

2009-12-13 Thread Dave Hawes
Having recently installed a 160m antenna here for the first time, I am starting
completely new on this band. I find that I am doing a huge amount of tuning
on the band, and find the DX4WIN bandmap useful for skipping over stations
already worked, etc.

I had waited for 8.03 to be released to see if Paul made any improvements to
the band map's functionality, but it seems to be the same as in 8.02.
Therefore, here are my wish list ideas for improving the band map for DXing:

1. Entering a callsign/frequency on the band map.

As far as I know, the only way to get a call onto the bandmap is to spot it.
The band map should be useful for those who are not connected to a cluster
or who wish to enter a call without spotting it. Working a station should
automatically enter that call on the band map at the logged frequency. A Ctrl
or Alt key combination should take the call from the Callsign field in the
main entry window and enter it in the bandmap at the current radio frequency.

I find the band map to be very useful, even as is, but hope that future
DX4WIN releases can provide increase functionality. If I have missed some
menu setting or other band map control features, please direct me to them.

[Dx4win] K3 and Split Packet Spots

2009-07-03 Thread Dave Hawes
I am using a K3 with v7.07 of DX4WIN.

Everything seems fine, except that I just notices that DX4WIN isn't
handling the splits properly. When you click on a spot with a listed QSX,
the VFO B is set properly, but the radio is not put into split mode.

If you are already in SPLIT, and click on a spot with a listed QSX, it sets
VFO B properly, and takes the radio out of split.

Is this a set up problem, a feature, or a bug?

[Dx4win] WinKeyer USB with DX4WIN

2006-12-25 Thread Dave Hawes
WinKeyer USB does work fine with 7.02.15.

However, I have a follow on question.

The Fx keys only send their messages when in keyboard mode, which
is entered by Alt-K. You can only type callsigns and reports, etc.
while the QSO window has focus, which is another Alt-K. Is there a
way to keep the focus on the QSO window while still having access to
the messages in the Fx keys? Maybe the logic should be that if the
keyboard window is visible, and focus is in the QSO window, then the
F keys should send the CW messages.

Possible? Feature request?

I'm a satisfied 6.04 user, but pondering upgrading to acquire WinKey
  support.

I have a K1EL WinKeyer USB that I use in standalone mode, as well as
during contests with N1MM Logger. It would be convenient to be able
to use the WK-USB for everyday DXing under DX4WIN control. I would
NOT want to have to plug/unplug cables to make the switch from
  DX4WIN to N1MM to DX4WIN.

Can anyone confirm that this is possible. (The archives indicate
that DX4WIN will interface with the various microHAM boxes via USB,
but there was nothing definitive with respect to a K1EL WinKeyer
  USB.)

[Dx4win] IC-765 control question

2003-12-27 Thread Dave Hawes
I was helping a friend set up his brand new v6.02. He has an IC-765.

We noticed that clicking on a CW spot would properly send the radio
to the frequency, but would set the CW filter to Wide. Is there a
modification to the radio control file for the 765 which will send the
radio to the proper frequency but set the filter at Narrow?

Thanks.

[Dx4win] Packet Window

2003-02-09 Thread Dave Hawes
Yes, that is the way it used to work. In fact, the size of the send
window is also lost if you click on Maximize and then Restore. I
liked it the old way, and wonder if there is some new functionality that
is tied to this behavior. If not, perhaps it can be either restored to the
previous behavior, which I prefer over the current way.

If I remember correctly, in the 5.x version if I made the send part

[Dx4win] Green on white spots

2003-02-06 Thread Dave Hawes

not worked or not confirmed, I want to keep working it until it's confirmed.

And that is the essential difference between Jim's and my approach to
DXing. I am interested in confirming the country. I am less interested
in other QSLs. However, I *personally* want to WORK new band
countries, just for the challenge/fun of it. You know, the ones that
show up as a - in the country window.

I would like the new band/mode spots to be white on green. As others
have said, it's a simple matter to turn the colors off if it bothers you.
Same could be said of red and blue. I know a fellow who doesn't
chase awards at all, and has made all the spots black on white,
regardless of priority level. Thanks, Paul, for the flexibility.

[Dx4win] Green on white spots

2003-02-05 Thread Dave Hawes
I actively chase new band/mode QSOs. Right now (6.01), there is no
spot color that will tell me that I have never worked the spotted station
on a particular band/mode (eg. 80m CW). It makes perfect sense to
me that DX4WIN should be able to tell me that. If the inverse video
paradigm is used for new ones, then a white on green would indicate
a new band/mode country, whereas a green on white would indicate
previously worked, but as yet unconfirmed band/mode country.

More to the point, though, is that all we need is a Priority definition for
this (New Award Band/Mode). Colors in DX4WIN can be customized.

Hi, I have received a number of direct emails, and read a few on the
reflector, asking that the definition of green on white spots be changed.
Currently (6.02), it makes no difference if the new band/mode combination is
confirmed or not. The suggestion is to only use this priority for
band/mode combinations that are new (never worked before). Ideas, objections?

[Dx4win] Priority 6 Spots Definition

2003-02-02 Thread Dave Hawes
From the help, the definition of Priority 6 on spots is:

6
Band/Mode not conf
green on white
Worked one or more stations using this band/mode combination but
none of
these contacts have been confirmed.

However, incoming spots are assigned Priority 6 for not only the
above definition, but also for cases of Band/mode not worked.
Since I am primarily interested in new band/mode QSOs, I had hoped
that the new version would be able to set a color for that particular
and specific case. Perhaps it does, and I'm missing a setting
somewhere. For now, any green on white spot needs to be checked
individually.

Help anybody?
