[Dx4win] Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing version 3.2 released
I've released version 3.2 of this utility: Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing http://dx4win.ad1c.us/VUCC/ You can see a sample of the output here: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/VUCC/vucc.html This is a major new release. It is not much different from what I released last night. The revision history is long, you can find it here: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/VUCC/#History Please read the documentation and let me know if there are any mistakes or omissions. I'm also willing to consider any reasonable requests or suggestions. NICE! Thanks Jim, this makes the needed grids stand out more. -- 73, Mike Cizek W0VTT -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Jim Reisert AD1C Sent: Monday, June 22, 2020 21:04 To: DX4WIN Reflector Subject: [Dx4win] Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing (6/23 testversion) I uploaded a new version of the "Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing" program: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/VUCC/VUCC_v3.1_20200623.exe http://dx4win.ad1c.us/VUCC/ - documentation etc. (not updated) You can find my original message here: http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/dx4win/2020-June/025751.html This is what the default output now looks like: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/VUCC/ad1c_2020-06-20.pdf The program looks slightly different. Here are the main changes: * Removed Output selection. The .csv file from the DX4WIN Listing can now be anywhere, but you'll still have to navigate to find it * Fixed a bug if the listing uses Frequency instead of Band. This would happen if the "Show band in MHz" box is checked on the QSO tab of your DX4WIN preferences. As a side-effect of this, I had to remove support for the 4cm (70MHz) band. If you need this, let me know. * Added two new check boxes: 1. Needed/worked (default = checked). When checked, the output will have darker NEEDED grids and lighter CONFIRMED/CHECKED grids. This will emphasize the grids you need to work, instead of the ones you have already confirmed. 2. C=S=* (default = checked). When checked, grids that are confirmed will be the same color as grids that are checked. In other words, there are only three different colors: unworked, worked and confirmed I also found a way to move the individual fields (10x10) to be adjacent to each other, without gaps. I renamed the "Field" field to be "LL Field", meaning Lower-left Field. This is how you specify what geographical area you want the output to cover. It can be a 2-letter field or up to a 6-digit grid, but only the first two letters of the field matter. I fixed a couple of other things that would cause the program to crash. Please give it a try and let me know what you think. One thing I would like to do, but is a bit of work, is to save the check box and print format settings. So the next time you run the program, you will get the same settings as the last time. I could potentially save the LL Field as well. -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Dx4win] Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing
Very nice Jim, thank you!! May I make a (radical) suggestion about color? For quick reference purposes, Confirmed and Checked are pretty much the same. Not Worked, and Worked but not Confirmed are important. How about this for colors: Confirmed = Light Gray Worked = Red or Med Gray Not Worked = Black This way, the needed grids stand out more. Thanks for ALL the great support you provide the DX community. This can be used anywhere in the world, not just USA. You can see an example of the current output here: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/VUCC/ad1c_2020-06-18.pdf The coloring is slightly different than before: - Black means Checked (credit given by ARRL) - Green means Confirmed (but not yet submitted) - Red means worked but *not* confirmed You may also notice a blue outline. I just added this option yesterday. It is for the Fred Fish Memorial Award from ARRL (FFMA): https://www.arrl.org/ffma I like to keep a printed copy near my operating position. For me, it works better than using F8 all the time. There is one problem that I need help with. As you can imagine, color works *great* if you have a color printer, but what happens if you only have a monochrome (black/white) printer? I printed the color result on a monochrome printer we also have in the house. The problem was that both the red (not confirmed) and green (confirmed) squares appear to be the same color (sort of a light black or dark gray). My proposal is for users who need to print the map on a monochrome printer, that I will use RED only for unconfirmed grids. Grids that are either confirmed or checked will show up in the same black color. This is to make it easier to identify grids you may need to re-work. Presumably, grids that are already confirmed are of "no interest". If you have any opinions, let me know. I've put up a beta version of the current release. [Dx4win] Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing version 2.1 released
I've released version 2.1 of this utility: Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing http://dx4win.ad1c.us/vucc/ As most everyone should know the "dot-zero" version of something always has bugs, and this was no exception. There was an uninitialized variable which didn't show up in my testing, only when I compiled the release version. Sadly, this one was easy to find, as the program failed with my own log! Thanks to Wayne, WA1PMA for noticing that something wasn't quite right. The title of the web page was incorrect (missing band/freq) when using "-f" frequency mode, that is also fixed (also WA1PMA). 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ Dx4win mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Dx4win@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I've released version 2.0 of this utility: Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing http://dx4win.ad1c.us/vucc/ This is a major revision, see the release notes at the bottom of the web page. If your map is missing some background images, let me know which fields and I will create them. Thanks for all the helpful comments and suggestions. Re: [Dx4win] Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing
I uploaded a new file. The gray I selected looked OK on screen, but was almost invisible when printed. I've changed the unworked grids to just plain "grey". They look a little dark on-screen (but you can still tell them from/red/green), but OK on paper. You will still be able to edit the output (HTML) file to choose your own colors, etc. I'll put instructions on the web page when I release the program. 73 - Jim AD1C On Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 10:18 AM, Jim Reisert AD1C wrote: > On Mon, Jun 21, 2010 at 8:51 AM, wrote: > >> Following Paul, F6EXV, suggestion and your response. Now that I am using CSS "styles", it's easy for me to make a couple of edits to the HTML code and see the results. In fact, anyone can do this to suit their taste. In addition, what I could do is show the unworked grid as white text on a white background (so it remains invisible), then have options to make it visible. Again, all stuff that is easy to test. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ Dx4win mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Dx4win@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

John has worked all 488 continental US grid squares and I think is one QSL away from completing the Fred Fish Memorial Award (http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Fred%20Fish.pdf). I made some changes today so the utility works with DX4WIN8 (DX4WIN7 still works). The utility also now treats submitted/approved credits as confirmed. I'm also going to improve the title bar so you know what fields are being displayed. Including the full name in each grid square of the output prevents it from fitting on a single page. Unfortunately, it's still a command-line program, that I'll release sometime this weekend. I'll create a Windows interface in the next release (after this one, no timetable). With the Windows interface, there will be a button so you can see the output immediately in your web browser of choice (then print it). Here are some ideas I've come up with, though I don't know how to implement some of them: 1. Overlay the grid data on top of a real map (don't know how to do this) 2. Print the field names in the background of each field (don't know how yet) 3. Rotate the page as landscape, so instead of 3x4 it's 4x3 (this means text has to rotate also, which may not be supported in HTML) 4. Color-code the field backgrounds (maybe add a legend). Is there any value in this? 5. Larger output, i.e. print more fields on a 11x17 printer (everyone has one of these, right)? Does anyone else have other ideas that I don't have time to work on? :-) 73 - Jim AD1C >> > __ Dx4win mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Dx4win@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: ht
Re: [Dx4win] Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing
Sorry, no release tonight. There is one simplifying change I want to make (all the band/frequency stuff is too confusing). If you want to see the landscape format (3 rows, for columns), take a look at: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/vucc/ Most all of the United States fits on one 11x8.5" page! 73 - Jim AD1C On 6/19/2010 5:55 PM, Jim Reisert AD1C wrote: > Hi Folks, > > After playing with Excel for a couple hours this morning, I could not > get exactly what I wanted. > > I'm going to keep the program the same as before (HTML output), but > I've made two changes: > > 1. Re: [Dx4win] Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing
Hi Folks, After playing with Excel for a couple hours this morning, I could not get exactly what I wanted. I'm going to keep the program the same as before (HTML output), but I've made two changes: 1. The program will print the 2-letter field abbreviation in the background of each 10x10 grid. 2. Three formats of output: Portrait 4R/3C (default), Landscape 3R/4C, 11x17 4R/8C I could really use some help. I wonder if someone can help me make GIF files for the 2-letter field abbreviations (images) using Microsoft Paint? There are 324 images total (AA through RR). I've made about a dozen covering most of the USA. I could continue to do it, but it would probably be on an as-need basis. Let me know if you're willing to help, and I can tell you exactly what I want, as well as sending sample files. I'll release the updated program on Sunday, no matter how many field images I have. 73 - Jim AD1C On Sat, Jun 19, 2010 at 10:14 AM, Jim Reisert AD1C wrote: > I am going to try to do one relatively easy thing in the upcoming > (non-Windows) release. > > I will add an option to generate a .CSV file instead of a .HTML file. > The spreadsheet will have placeholders for all grids, starting at AR09 > (upper-left) and ending at RA90 (lower-right). > > If you have confirmed a grid, it will show up in the spreadsheet like > "FN42" (UPPER case). Re: [Dx4win] Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing
I am going to try to do one relatively easy thing in the upcoming (non-Windows) release. I will add an option to generate a .CSV file instead of a .HTML file. The spreadsheet will have placeholders for all grids, starting at AR09 (upper-left) and ending at RA90 (lower-right). If you have confirmed a grid, it will show up in the spreadsheet like "FN42" (UPPER case). If you have only worked it, it will show up like "dn79" (lower case). I don't know what do about non-worked grids yet. If I leave the cells empty, the spreadsheet will be filled with blanks, and you don't have any idea what they are. At least this way, you can open the file in Excel and print any part of it you want. Don't forget to turn on grid lines! I'm thinking about another approach, but it's very different from this utility. Stay tuned! - Jim On Fri, Jun 18, 2010 at 3:01 PM, Jim Reisert AD1C wrote: > I started to work on this utility again (as I've been fairly active on > 6 meters lately, picking up new grids since moving to CO): > > Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing > http://dx4win.ad1c.us/vucc.htm > > I believe John W9RPM may have asked about this in the not-too-distant > past. [Dx4win] Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing
Hi Folks, I started to work on this utility again (as I've been fairly active on 6 meters lately, picking up new grids since moving to CO): Create VUCC Map from DX4WIN Award Listing http://dx4win.ad1c.us/vucc.htm I believe John W9RPM may have asked about this in the not-too-distant past.
