Turns out this is a problem with the fall update of windows 10, which by default enforces “controlled folder access”. Switch this off (in windows defender) and the update goes through seamlessly. I see this with a number of other applications which are denied write access to necessary

I updated successfully recently, and just tried to use update again without success. Running dx4win 9.0.4.1176 under windows 10. When I run “check for updates” I now see as error box from dx4win.exe that says “file access denied”. After looking through the log, it looks like dx4win is looking
