The update takes place automatically once you've manually initiated the 
check. Checking for the update doesn't, as I said below.

It's not "automatic" in the sense that you still need to go to
Help->Check for updates. Once you're there, if there are updates, yes,
they will download and install automatically.

Some applications will automatically check periodically without manual
intervention, but D4W doesn't do that.

Well, yes, because that is not a definition of automatic. It would be 
nice if DX4Win popped up a window notifying the user of new updates with 
an option of Yes-No to update. Best to do this during startup only, 
otherwise it would be too intrusive and a distraction while using the 
program.
