I guess I should elaborate on my brief posting. I agree with Jane, but most
courses on ecological modelling (EM) start with cabinet making. I've given a
numberf of short courses on EM at various universities, and almost always
the organisers start by asking what software I plan to use. And in
OK, another two pence worth!
I'm not sure I would use the word uniform in this context, honestly.
There are, depending on how one chooses to count (lumping or splitting)
somewhere between two and maybe a dozen significantly different
species of mathematical models applicable to systems of

Hi Ecologgers,
In follow-up to the below post by Marc Cadotte about the great new eco/evo
blog, EEB and Flow, I wanted to also point folks in the direction of the newly
revamped ESA blog, called EcoTone: www.esa.org/esablog.
This blog also focuses on research in the ecology world, but differs
I agree with much of what Bill and Ken have said. There ARE a fair
number of general courses that are not dominated by a particular
software package, but these seem more likely to be called
mathematical biology or mathematical ecology than modelling. Two
books that I've used in such courses are:

As for the statement that the state of practice of eco-modeling beyond

Esssentially all data are inexact, but some are useful. Modelling is not
something that lies outside the norms of science.
