DeForest (Ecosystem ecology, soil biology, climate change) http://www.plantbio.ohiou.edu/index.php/directory/faculty_page/jared_deforest/ Glenn R. Matlack (Population biology, forest history, spatial ecology) http://www.plantbio.ohiou.edu/index.php/directory/faculty_page/glenn_matlack/ Brian C. McCarthy (Community ecology, forest herb dynamics, invasive species) http://www.plantbio.ohiou.edu/index.php/directory/faculty_page/brian_mccarthy/ David M. Rosenthal (Physiological ecology, global change, invasion biology) http://www.plantbio.ohiou.edu/index.php/directory/faculty_page/david_m_rosenthal/ Morgan L. Vis (Aquatic biology, stream restoration ecology, acid mine drainage) http://www.plantbio.ohiou.edu/index.php/directory/faculty_page/morgan_vis/ Ohio University is a mid-sized comprehensive university located in rural southeastern Ohio. The quaint city of Athens provides a wonderful living environment with many opportunities for recreation and personal growth. The region is dominated by forest cover and presents numerous opportunities for all forms of forest ecology research. For more information about the department and our graduate program see: http://www.plantbio.ohiou.edu/index.php/index/ The deadline for application materials to the graduate program is 15-JAN-2012. However, prospective students typically have their materials in well before this date. Interested students are requested to contact a faculty member of interest prior to application to seek their support. Application is done online: http://www.ohio.edu/graduate/apply.cfm For additional assistance, please contact the Graduate Chair, Morgan Vis, at vis-c...@ohio.edumailto:vis-c...@ohio.edu. Brian C. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an active and externally funded research program in physiological plant ecology that can range from the organismal to landscape scale. Applicants with experience and interest in climate change ecology, biofuels, and/or plant stress are desired. The ideal candidate should be broadly trained in terrestrial plant ecology and have considerable experience in physiological plant ecology. Primary teaching responsibilities will include introductory undergraduate-level courses in plant biology and one or more upper-level/graduate courses in their area of specialty. The successful candidate should be committed to teaching undergraduates and developing a research program that involves undergraduates as well as graduate students. The Department of Environmental and Plant Biology (http://www.plantbio.ohiou.edu/) currently consists of 11 full-time faculty, 30 graduate students, and 60 undergraduate majors. Further information about Ohio University can be found at the University’s Web site: http://www.ohio.edu/. Minimum Qualifications: PhD in physiological plant ecology, plant ecology, or related field. Preferred: 1-2 years post-doctoral work and evidence of research and teaching effectiveness. We seek a candidate with a commitment to working effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds. Women and other minorities are encouraged to apply. Ohio University is an EEO/AA Employer. [ECOLOG-L] Call for Papers: J Torrey Bot Soc
CALL FOR PAPERS The Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society is now accepting manuscripts for 2011. This is the oldest botanical journal in the Americas and has been in continuous publication since 1870. The primary goal of the journal is the dissemination of knowledge in all areas of organismic botany with a geographic emphasis on the Western hemisphere. A broad range of manuscripts are permitted including empirical and theoretical studies, as well as review papers, in most areas of plant biology, especially plant ecology (as it relates to ECOLOG). There is NO charge for publication in the journal. Color plates are available at a reasonable cost. All papers are rigorously peer-reviewed. The journal is abstracted and indexed by most major services. Electronic issues are available worldwide through BioOne and JSTOR. Authors can submit and track manuscripts using the online manuscript tracking and peer review system: http://www.edmgr.com/torrey/. Additional information can be found at: http://www.torreybotanical.org/. Please contact the Editor if you have any questions: mccar...@ohio.edumailto:mccar...@ohio.edu. Brian C. [ECOLOG-L] Graduate Opportunities in Forest Ecology - OHIO Univ
GRADUATE OPPORTUNITIES IN FOREST ECOLOGY The graduate program in Forest Ecology in the Department of Environmental and Plant Biology at Ohio University invites students to apply to the MS and PhD programs beginning in Fall 2011. The Forest Ecology program offers comprehensive training and research in the biology of Eastern hardwood forests, with expertise at the full range of the ecological hierarchy: organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems, and landscapes. The program consists of seven faculty, specializing in various sub-disciplines, and a graduate student community of ca. 30 individuals. Students have an opportunity to examine basic conceptual issues of forest and plant dynamics, as well as, their direct application to problems of conservation and forest management. Some current areas of research include biological invasions, land use history, water transport in trees and seedlings, consequences of energy production on forest dynamics, and American chestnut restoration. Deadline for application is Jan! uary 15, 2011. All students accepted into the graduate program are supported by either teaching or research assistantships. Ohio University is situated in the small town of Athens, nestled in the densely forested hills of southeast Ohio. Check out our website at http://www.plantbio.ohiou.edu/index.php/research/forestecology/. Applicants are strongly encouraged to correspond directly with specific faculty that they may be interested in working with. Brian C.
