[ECOLOG-L] Next Generation Science Standards - Open for Review

2012-05-11 Thread Teresa Mourad
Dear colleagues:

Sorry for cross-postings

The long awaited Next Generation Science Standards are finally out for

Subject: The Draft Next Generation Science Standards Are Ready For Review

The first public draft of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is
available at www.nextgenscience.org from May 11 to June 1. We welcome and
appreciate your feedback.

There is no doubt that science - and, therefore, science education - is
central to the lives of all Americans. To that end, we must ensure that
all students have a solid education in science. The recent NAEP science
scores show we have a long way to go to ensure all of our students have
the science education they will need for college, careers and life.
That's why 26 states are working together to develop the NGSS -
internationally-benchmarked and rigorous state science education
standards. As part of that development process, there will be two public
comment periods where all interested parties are invited to give
feedback. The first one begins today.

The NGSS have been written as student performance expectations grouped by
topics, and can be viewed in the topical groupings or individually. The
draft performance expectations are composed of the three dimensions from
the NRC's Framework for K-12 Science Education. These draft performance
expectations describe how students will demonstrate their understanding.

To review the draft standards, go to www.nextgenscience.org. When you are
ready to provide comments, click on any of the links that say Go to the
NGSS Survey. Be sure to submit your survey by June 1. Feedback
collected during the comment period will be organized and shared with the
leading states and writing team members. After the feedback is
considered, a feedback report will be issued that will explain how
feedback was handled and why.

[ECOLOG-L] ESA Contingent Faculty Survey

2012-11-06 Thread Teresa Mourad
Contingent Faculty Survey Please respond by November 30, 2012
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ContingentFaculty

The Ecological Society of America is interested in understanding the needs
and concerns of ecologists who are employed as contingent faculty. Thus
the Society would like to hear from ecologists who are contingent faculty.

The term “contingent faculty” includes both part- and full-time non-tenure-
track faculty engaged in teaching and/or research. Specifically,
contingent faculty positions are contingent on external or continued
funding. Depending on the institution, contingent faculty are also known
as non-tenure-track faculty, non-senate faculty, adjunct faculty, clinical
faculty, research-grant funded personnel, lecturers, instructors,
postdocs, or part-timers.

To inform any action the Society takes, it needs to know how many members
and potential members are contingent faculty and what their needs are.
This survey has been designed to gather this information from ecologists
who are or have been contingent faculty working in higher educational or
academic institutions.

If you are not or have never been a contingent faculty member, you do not
need to complete the survey. If you know an ecologist who is or was a
contingent faculty member, please send this survey to them. Please take a
moment to respond to the Contingent Faculty Survey. We appreciate your
response by November 30, 2012. Survey results will be shared in the ESA
Bulletin.

Thank you for your participation.

[ECOLOG-L] Call for Submissions to ESA's TIEE: Teaching Issues and Experiments in Ecology

2012-12-13 Thread Teresa Mourad
Do your students actively explore data or use figures to investigate
ecological issues? Are your students asking questions, making observations,
and designing experiments in lab or field? Have you developed activities and
experiments for your students to use? If so, then consider sharing your
teaching resources with other ecology educators by contributing to TIEE:
Teaching Issues and Experiments in Ecology, a project of the Committee on
Diversity and Education of the Ecological Society of America (ESA).

TIEE is currently accepting submissions of issue-based activities and
inquiry-based experiments. Visit http://tiee.esa.org/misc/submit.html for
submission guidelines. Submissions will be peer-reviewed as they are
received. Anticipated time between submission and initial decision is 6
weeks. Articles are published online as they are ready.

TIEE Issues can be used in lecture (even in large classes), lab, and for
homework. They focus on core ecological concepts and subjects plus hot
topics. Issues can be either datasets or figure sets

TIEE Experiments are a collection of peer-reviewed laboratory activities.
Each experiment is based upon student-active inquiry, and therefore they
teach key ecological concepts as well as engaging students in the process of
ecological research.

Current volumes of TIEE can be accessed through http://tiee.esa.org and are
also disseminated through ESA EcoEd Digital Library, www.esa.org/ecoed.

Subject: Free Online Workshops To Enhance NSF Educational Proposals and
Projects - Register Now!

Dear Colleague:

Are you interested in giving your faculty a competitive edge in writing
proposals for educational research and development projects such as those
supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Transforming Undergraduate
Education in STEM (TUES) Program {formerly the Course, Curriculum and
Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) Program} or for research projects with
significant educational components (e.g., the BRIGE and CAREER programs)? Then
you will want to make arrangements for them to participate as a group in one or
more of the 21 upcoming NSF sponsored Interactive Web-based Workshops (IWBWs)
all of which will be presented by former NSF Program Directors in the Division
of Undergraduate Education.

The Virtual Faculty Collaborative (AAAS, Louisiana State University, and Higher
Education Services) is offering a series of Interactive Web-Based Workshops
(IWBWs) on topics that are important in preparing proposals and in implementing
funded undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)
education projects. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation
(NSF), Transforming Undergraduate Education in STEM (TUES) Program– which is a
program of the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE).

Workshop Topics

Individual workshops, which will last for two hours, will focus on:

***Developing an understanding of the NSF TUES Program
***Incorporating effective strategies into an educational proposal
***Defining project goals, expected outcomes, and evaluation questions
***Working with an evaluator to develop a project evaluation plan
***Addressing NSF’s broader impacts expectations in a project
***Designing a project for impact and transportability

Workshop Format

These workshops are intended for all STEM faculty members that are planning NSF
educational proposals or already have a funded project. They are designed to
engage local groups of participants in discussions of issues related to the
workshop topic that will enable local sites to interact with the entire virtual
group, and to be provided with information and insights on each of these
discussion items by workshop presenters.

Because of this distributed organization, only groups of STEM faculty at a site
may participate and each group must have a local facilitator who will work with
the presenters to organize the local activities and interact with the Presenter
in coordinating the workshop presentation. Those interested in serving as a
facilitator must submit an application for each IWBW they wish to hold at their
site. More information on facilitating an IWBW and on the application process
is provided at FACILITATORShttp://ehrweb01.aaas.org/stem-iwbw/facilitators/
link.

Workshop Schedule

Each IWBW will be offered multiple times between March 12 and May 1, 2013. The
workshop sessions are scheduled on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at
1:00-3:00 or 3:00-5:00 Eastern Time. Additional information about the IWBW
content, schedule, and presenters is available at the
WORKSHOPhttp://ehrweb01.aaas.org/stem-iwbw/workshops/ link.

Registration

To register for one or more NSF TUES IWBWs, please access the
sitehttp://ehrweb01.aaas.org/stem-iwbw/register/. If you have questions
about the IWBWs, please email Yolanda George at
ygeo...@aaas.orgmailto:ygeo...@aaas.org.

[ECOLOG-L] Education Using Continental-Scale Data Interactive Framework

2011-09-29 Thread Teresa Mourad
The conceptual framework for Education using Continental-scale Data is now
available in a new interactive format! This tool is currently under
development and we welcome comments and suggestions. The framework and
interactive guide was developed by Tom Langen, Clarkson University and
Brian Wee, NEON Inc.

The interactive tool is designed to guide educators toward teaching
opportunities and challenges using publically-available continental scale
data and is based on input by faculty at a workshop organized by ESA in
partnership with NEON Inc. in 2008
(http://www.esa.org/education_diversity/fed/2008workshop).

The purpose of the framework is to guide the user through the factors and
considerations that go into designing a learning activity using
continental-scale data – central to the future of environmental decision-
making.

To access the interactive conceptual framework and give us feedback on the
tool, please visit
http://www.esa.org/education_diversity/fed/content/conceptual-framework.

Please do check out this tool and provide your feedback by October 14,
2011.

Thank you!

The Geological Society of America and partners around the globe have been
developing citizen science projects -- allowing non-specialist volunteers
to participate in scientific research. This program, EarthTrek
(www.goEarthTrek.com), helps scientists collect data which can be
inexpensively done hundreds or thousands of times by students and members
of the general public. Our plan is to deliver: (a) enthusiastic citizen
scientists, e.g., student groups and individuals; and (b) an easy system
for planning and setting up projects, collecting data, and interacting
with participants.

[ECOLOG-L] Next Gen Careers in Environmental Biology SURVEY and WORKSHOP

2016-05-06 Thread Teresa Mourad
The Ecological Society of America (ESA) and the Society for Conservation
Biology (SCB) is planning to create a new network of prospective employers,
faculty and professional societies.

With support from the National Science Foundation, the Next Generation Careers
- Innovation in Environmental Biology Education (NGC) incubator project will
explore undergraduate college career progression in environmental biology,
including fields such as but not limited to ecology, evolution, conservation,
natural resource management and geographic systems.

The network seeks to identify what may be needed to effectively inspire,
motivate and mentor students, as well as build new synergies across sectors to
advance Next Generation Careers in Environmental Biology. Please visit
www.esa.org/nextgencareers<http://www.esa.org/nextgencareers> for more
information.

The NGC project invites you to participate in two ways.

 1) Survey of Undergraduate Faculty, Program Administrators and Career

Workshop Description:
This workshop will bring together faculty from the sciences, including
Chemistry, Geoscience, Physics, Biology, and allied fields, who teach
computation and quantitative thinking skills using MATLAB. Computation is
broadly defined as using computers in scientific work to understand and solve
problems, or formulating problems in ways that can be computed. Learning how to
process data and develop quantitative models are critically important for
students to perform calculations, analyze data, create numerical models and

[ECOLOG-L] FW: Invitation to Apply: EQuIP Peer Review Panel for Science

2016-09-06 Thread Teresa Mourad
This is a forwarded message from “Next Generation Science Standards”

Please contact n...@achieve.org for additional questions or comments.

INVITATION TO APPLY

 Achieve announces launch of

EQuIP Peer Review Panel for Science

Achieve is excited to announce the creation of the EQuIP Peer Review Panel for
Science.

The goal of the EQuIP Peer Review Panel for Science will be to identify
high-quality lessons and units that are designed for the Next Generation
Science Standards (NGSS). Building on the work of the EQuIP peer review panels
for mathematics and English Language Arts, the science peer reviewers will
evaluate lessons and units in their area of expertise and, collectively, will
cover grades K-12. Any lessons and units that are determined to be of high
quality will be publicly shared via www.nextgenscience.org so that educators
and curriculum developers across all states and districts can benefit from
these materials.

APPLICATION PROCESS

1. Interested persons must complete this online application. (Application
period is Sept. 6 - Sept. 23, 2016)

2. Applicants will receive an email containing two grade-banded science lessons
to review and one copy of the new EQuIP Rubric for Science (Version 3) to use
as they evaluate both science lessons.

3. Applicants must submit their completed EQuIP rubric reviews for
consideration. (Due no later than Sept. 23, 2016)

4. Accepted applicants will be notified of their selection as a peer reviewer.
(By Oct. 21, 2016)

5. Selected peer reviewers must confirm their commitment and interest. (No
later than Oct. 25, 2016)

SELECTION PROCESS

While all interested persons are encouraged to apply, the application process
is designed to evaluate applicant's ability to apply the EQuIP Rubric for
Science (Version 3.0) and reveal their understanding of A Framework for K-12
Science Education and the NGSS. Applicants will be selected based on their
ability to make consistent, criterion-based evaluations using the latest
version of the EQuIP Rubric for Science.

Please note that the EQuIP Rubric for Lessons & Units: Science (Version 2.0)
has been updated and looking ahead, selected peer reviewers will only use the
new EQuIP Rubric (Version 3.0) to evaluate lessons for quality and alignment to
the NGSS. The latest tool, Version 3.0, will be released to applicants (and
available on www.nextgenscience.org).

THE COMMITMENT

The responsibilities of the peer reviewers will include:

1. Convening in person at least once each calendar year, starting with a
mandatory two-day Kickoff Meeting during November 15-16, 2016.

2. Committing up to twelve days of service during the inaugural one-year term,
through a combination of in-person and virtual meetings, as well as time spent
independently reviewing collections.

3. Completing a quality review process for a minimum of ten assigned reviews
per year, including submitting written, criterion-based feedback in a timely
manner.

While peer reviewers are committing to a one-year term, the work will be
ongoing and there will be opportunities to extend their involvement. A full
list of responsibilities will be provided to selected peer reviewers on October
21, 2016.

For answers to common questions, check out the FAQ: EQuIP Peer Review Panel for
Science.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Achieve thanks Alcoa Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York, and Pisces
Foundation for their generous support of EQuIP for Science and for working to
ensure all students have access to a quality science education.

[ECOLOG-L] SCIENTIST MENTORS URGENTLY NEEDED

2017-08-17 Thread Teresa Mourad
Forwarded on behalf of Botanical Society of America's Planting Science program

Scientist Mentors Urgently Needed for PlantingScience.org Online Mentoring
Program

PlantingScience.org<https://plantingscience.org/> is seeking plant scientists
(undergraduates through retired/emeritus) willing to mentor middle and high
school students this fall (Sept - Nov).

We expect over 1000 student teams and we don't have enough mentors to work with
them all!

Mentors work online with 1-3 teams of students to help them design and carry
out investigations on a variety of plant science themes. Mentors post on the
team's webpage about 3 times a week while the teams are active to help students
think through problems, offer encouragement, and share their passion for plants
and science. We're expecting to have especially large need for mentors willing
to work with high school students on our "Power of Sunlight" photosynthesis and
respiration theme this fall: https://plantingscience.org/posinformation.

It only takes about an hour a week, and is an easy way to get outreach
experience and make a real difference to the next generation of scientists and
citizens. Read about a new mentor's experience here:

· DIG into Data for the Biology Classroom Faculty Mentoring Network

· Funding Support for BioQUEST/QUBES Summer Workshop June 18-23 at
Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, CA.

· Be recognized as an ESA Education Scholar!

The Quantitative Undergraduate Biology Education Synthesis (QUBES) Project and
the Ecological Society of America (ESA) are inviting applications for an
upcoming Faculty Mentoring Network (FMN). FMNs are professional development
opportunities through online communities where participants work
collaboratively to discover new teaching materials, pedagogical techniques, and
quantitative content.

The DIG into Data for the Biology Classroom FMN is seeking applicants who have
experience in bringing data-driven activities into the introductory biology or
ecology classroom, and are interested in exploring, adapting, and implementing
new teaching modules using authentic research data. Participants in this
network will develop adaptations of dataset teaching resources for their
classroom. These will posted on QUBES as derivative open educational resources
publications, with associated commentary on EcoEdDL<http://bit.ly/EcoEdDL>. The
original resources selected for this network were recently published in a
special issue of ESA's Teaching Issues and Experiments in Ecology
(TIEE)<http://bit.ly/ESA-TIEE>. This FMN is part of the DIG
project<http://bit.ly/2IN30v7> to build collaborative spaces for teaching with
quantitative data (funded by an NSF Research Coordination Network (RCN)
Incubator Grant DBI 1730122).

Logistics:

FMN participants will meet in person at the BioQUEST/QUBES Summer
Workshop<http://bit.ly/2FWvXHg> June 18-23 at Harvey Mudd College, Claremont,
CA. Funding for the conference registration, dorm housing, and food will be
provided. Participants are responsible for their own transportation. Attending
the summer workshop is required for participation in this FMN.

The FMN will continue working together on development, implementation, and
publication of adaptations during Fall 2018 through virtual meetings. Please
visit the Data Incubator Group FMN<http://bit.ly/DIG18FMN> website for more
details and to apply.

Applications:

Due April 13th. All faculty are welcome. We encourage participation from
faculty at diverse institution types and serving diverse student populations.

[ECOLOG-L] NOMINATE YOUR STUDENT FOR THE ESA-USGS Cooperative Summer Internship Program

2018-11-15 Thread Teresa Mourad
ESA-USGS Cooperative Summer Internship
Program<http://www.esa.org/nextgencareers/usgsfieldinternships>
Deadline for Nominations: November 30, 2018

The Ecological Society of America is pleased to announce a partnership with the
US Geological Survey to offer summer internships to outstanding field-trained
undergraduate ecology majors.

The agency is seeking to create a pathway whereby students with excellent
training in biological field methods can be nominated and apply for summer
internships at USGS, modeled after a similar partnership with the National
Association of Geoscience Teachers. The agency is now seeking to expand the
program to students trained in biological or ecological field methods. The USGS
is the science arm of the Department of the Interior. The agency has 8,000
employees across all states and territories and mission areas in ecosystems,
environmental health, water, and climate, as well as the traditional geologic
areas like natural hazards, energy, geology, and minerals.

The ESA-USGS Cooperative Summer Internship Program is ready to receive
nominations of 1 or 2
students<http://www.esa.org/nextgencareers/usgsfieldinternships> who have
completed your field course or program within the past 6 months (additional
criteria apply).

You are invited to submit information about your course or program and to
nominate your student/s. Your participation allows students trained in
biological or ecological field methods to be hired by the USGS at available
field, laboratory, or office related scientific positions throughout the
country in 2019. If you allow, information about your course or program will
also be posted on our website as a service to the community- especially to
students and parents seeking information on programs relevant to ecology.

Criteria for Eligible Students and Qualifying Field Training Courses or
Programs Apply. Please see details at
http://www.esa.org/nextgencareers/usgsfieldinternships

Thank you so much for your support. We look forward to your submission.
