[ECOLOG-L] Next Generation Science Standards - Open for Review
Dear colleagues: Sorry for cross-postings The long awaited Next Generation Science Standards are finally out for community review! I understood from a meeting I attended that 26 states have agreed to adopt these standards. So this is huge and I URGE you all to review and comment. Have a great weekend. Teresa * From: Next Generation Science Standards [mailto:achi...@achieve.ccsend.com] On Behalf Of Next Generation Science Standards Sent: Friday, May 11, 2012 3:27 PM To: Teresa Mourad Subject: The Draft Next Generation Science Standards Are Ready For Review The first public draft of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is available at www.nextgenscience.org from May 11 to June 1. We welcome and appreciate your feedback. There is no doubt that science - and, therefore, science education - is central to the lives of all Americans. To that end, we must ensure that all students have a solid education in science. The recent NAEP science scores show we have a long way to go to ensure all of our students have the science education they will need for college, careers and life. That's why 26 states are working together to develop the NGSS - internationally-benchmarked and rigorous state science education standards. As part of that development process, there will be two public comment periods where all interested parties are invited to give feedback. The first one begins today. The NGSS have been written as student performance expectations grouped by topics, and can be viewed in the topical groupings or individually. The draft performance expectations are composed of the three dimensions from the NRC's Framework for K-12 Science Education. These draft performance expectations describe how students will demonstrate their understanding. To review the draft standards, go to www.nextgenscience.org. When you are ready to provide comments, click on any of the links that say Go to the NGSS Survey. Be sure to submit your survey by June 1. Feedback collected during the comment period will be organized and shared with the leading states and writing team members. After the feedback is considered, a feedback report will be issued that will explain how feedback was handled and why.

[ECOLOG-L] ESA Contingent Faculty Survey
Contingent Faculty Survey Please respond by November 30, 2012 https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ContingentFaculty The Ecological Society of America is interested in understanding the needs and concerns of ecologists who are employed as contingent faculty. Thus the Society would like to hear from ecologists who are contingent faculty. The term “contingent faculty” includes both part- and full-time non-tenure- track faculty engaged in teaching and/or research. Specifically, contingent faculty positions are contingent on external or continued funding. Depending on the institution, contingent faculty are also known as non-tenure-track faculty, non-senate faculty, adjunct faculty, clinical faculty, research-grant funded personnel, lecturers, instructors, postdocs, or part-timers. To inform any action the Society takes, it needs to know how many members and potential members are contingent faculty and what their needs are. This survey has been designed to gather this information from ecologists who are or have been contingent faculty working in higher educational or academic institutions. If you are not or have never been a contingent faculty member, you do not need to complete the survey. If you know an ecologist who is or was a contingent faculty member, please send this survey to them. Please take a moment to respond to the Contingent Faculty Survey. We appreciate your response by November 30, 2012. Survey results will be shared in the ESA Bulletin. Thank you for your participation.

MathWorks (makers of MATLAB) is sponsoring the workshop. Details Workshop:Teaching Computation in the Sciences Using MATLAB Location: Carleton College, Northfield, MN Date: October 23-25, 2016 (5 PM Sunday to 2 PM Tuesday) Learn more from the workshop website: http://serc.carleton.edu/matlab_computation2016/index.html Workshop Description: This workshop will bring together faculty from the sciences, including Chemistry, Geoscience, Physics, Biology, and allied fields, who teach computation and quantitative thinking skills using MATLAB. Computation is broadly defined as using computers in scientific work to understand and solve problems, or formulating problems in ways that can be computed. Learning how to process data and develop quantitative models are critically important for students to perform calculations, analyze data, create numerical models and visualizations, and more deeply understand complex systems, ?all essential aspects of modern science. These skills require students to have comfort and skill with languages and tools such as MATLAB. To achieve comfort and skill, computation and quantitative thinking must build over a 4-year degree program across courses and disciplines. Participants will help build a collection of teaching activities that showcase computation, quantitative thinking, and applied math using MATLAB and design approaches to integrating these skills throughout science degree programs. The workshop target is 30 college educators (by application). There is no registration fee to attend.
