Dave,
Same noise here (K3#1212) near 28MHz.
May be related to encoder transitions spectrum
falling around this frequency?
With a noise level corresponding to S1 (no antenna),
the VFO tuning noise is peaking to S2;
with antenna, (S4 noise) the tuning noise
is just audible and no Smeter level
Be sure you are not listening to free bander buckshot. I hear a lot of
freebanding which seems to come from Mexico or Central America. Sometimes it
is noise, sometimes carriers and sometimes voice. The voice is in Spanish
usually and the carriers come and go like several stations using AM.
The frequency is 3630 KHz plus or minus the QRM.
The start time is 0900 hours local (0800 UTC).

Willis et al,
I raised this issue several months ago and this is my
response from Elecraft Support. Believe me, it is a real issue definitely
on 6 meters.
Hi Bob,
This is a known issue and Wayne is working with another engineer on how the
noise
might be reduced or eliminated.

Hi Dale:
I also ordered the Proset with my K3 and it arrived with the proper
connectors to plug it into the front or rear.
The headphone portion of the cable has a stereo 1/8 plug with a 1/8 to

The microphone portion of the cable has a mono 1/8 plug with an adapter

I need a Y cable from that ACC I/O Port: DB-15M to TWO DB-15F. The

After reading your post I played with the K3 more and I think you are right
about it being an impression of thumps. To me it is high band noise on 40

bands where there is very little band noise and do not hear the thumping. I

Correct Ron. With slow QSK like some rigs have, you would hear nothing
between characters but the K3 is fast enough to allow the tiny window of
noise to pop through and to some, it sounds like a thump or a click and
actually in a way, it is. If you tune in a steady carrier and key at about

Hi,
I'm setting up the rig to operate from a remote location over the Internet.
On page 43, the manual has a very brief description of how to turn the
radio on and off.
If I activate a relay remotely to ground Pin 8 on the ACC socket, I can
turn the radio on. Will it hurt anything if I
BTW, I got a couple that are marked Philmore, a common brand in parts
stores, and they seem to ohm out properly- all connections made and
nothing cross-connected. I wouldn't buy anything without return

Philmore part number 70-568 has 100% integrity between all 15 pins. This is
the item that Altex Computers in Texas sells, per N6XI's posting that W4TV
linked below. All the others that several of us have checked have a number
of unconnected pins and some also have multiple-connected pins. In

Art,
I don't have specific information about it, so I can just give a guess.
If I were implementing a remote power on/power off sequence, I would
activate the relay for power on. Whether I de-activate it after a few
seconds, I don't know, but for certain on power off, I would first
Van,
My understanding is that there is some obscure FCC regulation that in
the case of the K3 band coverage prevents scanning above 30 MHz. I have
heard here on the reflector that Elecraft is working to get this
restriction removed, but I have heard no real info about it.

I value your input on my VFO hash issue. Of all the responses yours seems to

My XYL was participating in a singing event this afternoon so I made a hasty
decision to pack up my QRP K2 and head for the top of Morrow Mountain (NC
State Park). After several misfires with my slingshot (out of practice) I
got my Par EndFedz-20/40 installed in a tree over a picnic table.
I had a similar issue, except my encoder noise was most noticeable around
5MHz. After testing and discussions with Wayne, it appears to be due to
hot synthesizers.
I do not notice this problem in the 6m band.

Hi Dave,
I've gone through this issue with Wayne and Aptos as well. My hash is
registers approximately S3-S5 around 5Mhz. According to Wayne, the
synthesizers may be hot. I do not notice this problem anywhere else and
since I usually don't operate around 5Mhz, it's gone unnoticed for some
time.
I've had a report today that one of the clubs K3's has lost all audio
from the internal speaker and the rear speaker jack, it just crackled
and disappeared. The headphones are still working fine.
All menu settings are correct, but no audio.
