My KX3 cuts off input if the mic gain is set too high. Maybe same issue for
your K3?

Hi Mal,
There was a bunch of advice so far on the list, did any of that help you?

Make sure your power supply provides enough voltage and can handle the power
draw (300 watts is probably a good number). This happened to me too when I
accidentally adjusted the voltage of my PSU too low. I now have it at 13.6V.

Barthold,
The band does not matter, you need the 13kHz roofing filter to run FM on any
band.

I find the KX3 internal speaker OK, but not great. I found this amazingly
small, powered (internal battery) speaker that is a huge upgrade, and weighs
almost nothing. Important if you go back packing.

Walter,
This was a super informative writeup, thank you!
I have one question for you. If you throw a 26-29 foot wire in a tree, but it
is impractical to sit right at the end of the wire (too many branches in the
way, or whatever) to operate, how would you extend it? For example, operate

that is 1800 watts input.
I would think this depends on the mode you operate in?
For Field Day, I operated my KPA500 (SSB only) with a 1000 watt inverter,
without any issues the whole weekend.

I see it on 20m, 40m, 80m, on two different antennas. Haven't tried any
other bands.

Is it OK to use ESSB on the net?
Thanks,

Hi All,
Maybe you can help with something that is baffling me. My KPA500 doesn't go
to full output until I have spoken my callsign (when trying to get through a
pileup) a few times. It starts off with 100 or so watts, and after a few
iterations rises to the full 500W output. I see this both on
Hi Don,

thought of that and will work as well of course!

Hi Don,
Ok, this all came from Dick saying that you can see the "bypass SWR" that
the KAT500 measures with the PC utility. But if you don't have that hooked
up, a simple trick seemed to be to put the KAT500 in bypass mode, and see
what the KPA500 tells you on its SWR led bar. That can give you an
by the
antenna feedline.
The KAT500 Utility will show you that bypassed VSWR value even though the
KAT500 is not bypassed.

As will the SWR meter on the KPA500, right?

Hi Don,
Thanks for the reply!
The FT991 has an input TX-REQ (on the REM/ALC port) that, if shorted to
ground, will send the necessary RF for an external tuner to function. So if
the KAT500 has some way to signal that I am done. Any idea if that
functionality exists?
Thanks!
