How about a blinking vfo [B] for diversity ? I, too, find it cumbersome to
look for the blinking dot with my telescope.
Since all the action is on one band , we're only interested in the vfo B digits
after the first decimal point. That leaves the first two digit spots open for
indicating
Mr. Fatfingers hit that N1MM SUBRX key many times in the last contest ( trying
to hit ESC key) KPA humming along just fine.
[OT]: I did , on rare occasions, get a fault after a band change, remedied by
a reset. K3, KAT500, KPA500 all Auxbussed.

I have the tuner under the amp, figuring the tuner would be light, and
pushing buttons would move it around. However, all three antenna ports are now
under the fan of the KPA500, and right next to the top of the desk. Mr
Fumblefingers has a hard time screwing on the PL259's. I'm going to cut a
Almost the same problem here. The difference is that toggling SPKR+PH on and
off has no effect. I'm also sure the MCU isn't the reason, as this popped up
well after changing to 4.6, but I suppose there could be different reasons for
you and I. I have convinced myself that the headphone jack up
I bought a used, early model K3. It developed a few problems over the years,
but all were fixable right here, and I don't have a degree in rocket science
either. Elecraft is Number One in customer service and support. There are nits
to pick ( one guy wants this, that guy wants that ... etc.) ,
I may have missed reading it, but I'd like to comment about being unhappy with
a rig. Because of the nature of todays' rigs, it's pretty easy for the user ...
I repeat ... the user to set bit up so that it sounds like a piece of junk. I
recall a fellow who was so unhappy with his K3, he sold it
Had the same experiences with the keyer paddle KXPD3 ... a bit too much tension
( which is not adjustable except by surgery ) and the spacing is kinda tricky (
wound up having it wider than I like ). I also like a slightly wider paddle
footprint ( someone suggested gluing/sticking something on
Since you're using N1MM, type the desired frequency into the call entry
logging window and press enter.

In CQWW CW it was common to find a pileup that was a big mess, or the DX
at the bottom of it was hard to ID for some reason. Time to move on and
return later. The frequency
Same deal here a few weeks ago. K6RB is exactly correct. The purpose of the
washers and nut is to provide extra support so that the bottom panel wouldn't
suffer any warpage during rough handling. ( There's a plate underneath anyway)
I can assure all that it works fine without them. I have no
running XP with service pack 3; using a serial port ( no usb converter ). There
were no other COM ports or USB ports or other programs in use at the time.
Never having had a com port issue, and using the new Utility, then getting a
failure, then seeing someone else having the same problem
Stan:
I had a firmware download failure last night using the latest Utility. Started
out OK, but totally disappeared about half way thru MCU 4.39. Got the blank
screen of Death on the K3. The utility had started hunting for the com port it
was already using. Eventually got the force-fed
I have not heard of many incidents with diode damage with the K3, but
with the K2, we hear of this problem frequently. I do not know why the
K3 has escaped damage to the wattmeter diodes, since its power control
mechanism is similar to the K2. from W3FPR
Not quite. My early K3 developed
There is a certain value in learning to use a straight key. Requires no power
or batteries, is immune to RF, and passable CW can be generated with just
about any type of contacts. I recall using gum wrappers taped to my fingers
when I was a kid ( just fer fun).
I still have one hooked up. I
Some smart guy could figure out a PTT mechanism keyed by dropping your head a
bit ... sort of like a nod. Mercury switch?

Help:
Sounds like my next mobile radio I've used the K3 mobile many times and
just wished it wasn't quite so big as it is. Hoping there might be some
generosity in connecting cables between rig and amp/atu.

The 1.5-pound radio itself puts out 10 watts+. We'll also be

Royal Caribbean specifically forbids the use of ham radio on their cruises.
Next time ( if there is a next time) (I'd rather have ordered the KPA500), I
pick the cruise line instead of the XYL.

Exactly my thoughts. I found the initial beta release with APF to be excellent.
After further improvements, more miss than hit, despite trying all the
tricks. Just my two cents worth...
Now back to the extensive QRP/QRO thread, and it's tenuous connection to the
KPA500...

I'm reminded of a Field Day a few years ago where tested , tried and true
antennas suddenly didn't work anymore ... bad SWR's all over the place, goofy
noises, etc. etc.
Re-tested with different analyzers and dummy loads ... they checked out fine...
so what's going on when connecting extra coax
