I have done a lot of this ... used an inverted L for 20 meters (tacked along

(slightly elongated) a 20 meter helically wound vertical, and one of my
favorites, a 2 element helically wound 10 meter beam (elements were

I have modeled this too on my old K6sti software ... need to get a windows
replacement. Make that a horizontal 20 DEZ (86') and not only is that
antenna lots of fun on 20 but it is lots of fun on 10 with a very nice
cloverleaf pattern (can't remember the gain).
Hi Jim,
I use exactly that here in Tampa. My antenna is a stealth 43' of green 18
gauge wire up a tree and 43' of the same horizontal hidden in the bushes. I
am in an apartment. The feed point is about 10' above ground. I feed it with
open wire line from a 4:1 balun on the back of my K3 with
I have a Collins 30L-1 I use with my K3. BUT several years ago (before I got
the K3) I installed a Soft-Key kit from ... I think Harbach. Works fine
and solved that problems

A new product I would love to see would be a 500 watt mobile/12 VDC amp ...
although that would be a very small niche
in ham radio and probably low sales. Just thinking out loud here.

Also check the external cable to the radio. When I replaced my FT1000 with a
K3 (best move in the ham shack ever ... but I gotta say the FT1000 served me
well for 20 years), the the short section of cable from the external rx
antenna switch box to the K3 went bad. I took the K3 apart first
Did anybody use those quality plugs with double RG-174? Or
with some other type of cable that makes it easy to split the channels at
the other end? Or is there a ready-made Y cable available like the one I
have, but very reliable when used for K3 stereo speaker connection?
I use a spare set of

Mike,
It would be good if you post that to the Elecraft reflector just for
general information.

My bet will be on a bad connection someplace after the amp. With power
something is shorting ... could be in coax connector, antenna, etc ... been
through that. Once had found an elevated radial on 160 inverted L had
dropped and touching a tree limb was the problem.

If you happen to have a 5/8 wavelength 2 meter antenna, they work pretty
good on 6 meters.

fine. I used the stock settings in the K3. Someday I will try tweaking the

Good Morning Ya’ll
This morning my Astron SS-30M (used regularly for 15 years) went south in a
puff of smoke and voltage on the meter was fluctuating around 10VDC. No damage
to the K3. WHEW! I pulled out my Astron VS-50M (haven’t used in 15 years) and
its voltage was also fluctuating a bit
Those Astrons ... The SS-30M, I took the cover off and went, YUK! It is a
switching power supply and my first thought is to treat it like I treat
computer power supplies I liked it because it small and light weight

As for the VS-50M,
Anyone remember CO2BB? One always knew who that was without hearing the call
