Hi Folks
HNY from ZL,
Just a quick post about small minor parts for my K3.
Now nearly 10 years old and has broken audio/rf
knobs. No big deal been like this for a while.
Checked today to replacewith shipping to ZL
it's a lost cause. Guess this relates to
inventory and stock control.
possible long shot check status of D19 Alignment and Test

Hi folks
A follow up KX-3 4092.
Thankyou to the off-list emails and advice.
It's not looking flash. Suspect the fault is a low level
issue on the early 12volt lines or one of the dc-dc converters.
At this stage it's a non-viable repair here so will put it on the

Hi folks
Havn't used the kx-3 for months.
Think it could be seriously broken...
when power +12v is plugged in the lcd lights and thats about all.
This happens without the usual power up buttons.
Nothing looks out of place under the hood and the flexible pcb is
pushed in correctly.

A while ago updated a k3 using my laptop and usb to serial. The RS232 won't
fit
properly to the K3 so used a linking CAT-5E cable a couple of meters long.
The update failed several times, not sure of exact cause, possible x-talk
across the
tx/rx pairs or unused wires.
Hello again folks
Thanks to all for the suggestions and hints to what this problem could be.
Tests have been done at 2 locations; my own home station and here at another
property ( work in progress as we
politely say..) about 125km south of Auckland.

Hi Folks
I have owned a KX-3 for a couple of years, have fitted the filter
board and auto-tuner and a set of internal batteries and charger.
Certainly a tidy package.
Something I like using is a small light headset aka cheap and cheerful
pc gaming type hardware. i use these on my K2 and K3
K2 here was built several years ago and later added the external 100w pa and
tuner.
For quite a while got reports of slightly ragged sideband but certainly not
a show stopper.
A few weeks ago finally took a look and found the bias on the K2 finals just
slightly
on the low side; according to the

Hi folks
thanks to historic user postings regarding the KPA100 amp
loosing power control
D17 shorted.
Havn't got spares on hand so replaced D16 and D17 with
stock 1N4148 which have a higher forward turn on voltage.
Output checks seem ok and RF indication on the K2 looks
normal.

Hi folks
K2 here has what appears to be an odd issue with strongs sigs
around 7175Khz
Tuning approx 5 Khz higher the same signal can be heard several s-points
down.
Best guess seems to be centred around the 7175 - 7180 range.
I have a distant memory reading about this many years ago at build,
Hi again folks
Update on K2 40 meter audio images around 7175;
Serial number of build is 6534 with most options installed.
Dummy load on Antenna RX 40 meters.
Test signals received on 7170 approx 50uVolt, S9 on the K2.
Tune to approx 7175 an image is heard. It is not inverted or
reversed
Hi Folks
Owned a KX3 for a while but never used portable until recently.
Antenna is a 40m dipole, coax fed. Nothing exotic.
For some reason the KX3 tuner has a problem getting a good match.
It settles on something like 1.8/1 which is not big deal except other
transcievers show near perfect
Hi folks
Latest firmware for KX-3 now has stacks of mic gain using
cheap and cheerful computer type headsets.
PTT is not used here, all VOX on SSB.
Disable PTT and microphone bias.
Appox 2.5 volts from the PTT line will power the
element ok.
There is very low level audio noise from the PTT
Hi folks
K3 here owned for about 4 years.
Latest firmware.
Last couple of days at power up the PA Temp is unstable.
LCD flicks between 27 and 40 degs C.
TX and RX same reading.
Noticed the rear fans starting and stopping
Reloaded firmware no change.

Interesting to see this thread..
the K2 and K3 owned here have bags of
audio transmit gain. This allows the heavy
bass vowel sounds to be rolled off below about
300 hz. The KX3 seems to be slightly lacking in
TX audio; the not-so-great fix here has been to
construct a very small outboard single
Interested in this thread..
the KX-3 seems a tad low on TX audio gain.
I use the same mic/headsets on my K2 and K3 with

Hello folks
KX-3 latest firmware.
Don't seem to be able to get fast AGC

high local noise.
Slow AGC is very smooth, seems like the fast

Using earphones no problem
Hi folks
K3 here has developed a slight problem with the PA temp sensing..
it is flicking between normal and +40 several times per minute.
noticed the fans starting in a very cold shack RX only running.
This may have been happening for a while, but never noticed until
the cooler mornings.
Hello folks
Owned my k3 for about 3 years, performance
is spot on, just one very minor operator feature
that I've never quite got comfortable with;
The K3 notch filter appears to be after the IF system?

Hello folks,
The K3 here is sometimes powered
from DC AGM battery supply.
Voltage can drop in the evenings on load
to approx 12.0VDC.
At 100W carrier a DVM reading at the anderson connectors shows
close to 12 vdc; there is a small drop in the heavy
power feed cable.
The K3 LCD voltage

The MH2 mic PTT may be getting caught in the
rubber surround. It is easy to undo the cover.
Note that the PTT button only fits one-way, there
is a cut away slide which fits onto the switch.
For my own use the mic insert had a tad
to much bass, it has been slightly modded here to
suit.

Good morning folks
Noticed the odd pitch change a while ago, it is
on strong sigs over s9.
It is heard on some signals more
than others. The only thing I have found is
CW with moderate to bad key clicks seem to have this
odd tonal shift, compared to clean CW at the same
received level.

Hi Jim
Thanks for the info :-)
Excellent, that is exactly what I want to put together.
for the record, some background to this project...

I havn't done anything remotely serious for over 20 years !

Hello folks
Need a bit of input hereI have a K2 with auto tuner fitted.
I would like to add the 100watt amp and external tuner.
Can these be put together in one single unit, using an Elecraft
box ?
Not sure how the amplifier is linked to the K2, normally it has
a harness internally.
Hi folks
This was a thread a week or two back.
Very slight kinda' pitch change when listening to
strong CW sigs.
I posted a while ago relating this to the hardware AGC action, seems to
occur
when sigs over about 70 uV
Had another listen this evening; think it occurs when the CW siganls have
Hello folks
Just to follow up on this thread...listening to quite strong CW sigs
with Slow AGC setting is not too flash. I would guess sigs over
75 uV or so which is well into the 9+ region.
It is hard to exactly describe but sounds like the Hardware AGC
loop is pumping. It is fine on SSB or

great thread !
similar story here, young teenage years using a Heathkit HR-10 reciever, and

The HR-10 was less than stellar for sideband, it had more drift than a
Japanese fishing fleet !
Very early on I was given a battery tube AM / CW
3dB accross the combiner using both recievers, for low band use not an
issue.
The digi audio recorder is great. On air play-back is excellent.

Hi Mike
The K1 cover is the original supplied with the kit.
Smaller speaker volume is quite a bit lower, but I use a headset so
it's not a big issue for my style of use.
The bracket which the batts/speaker sit in can be slightly
modified to sit lower in the chassis, this allows the kit cover
Hello folks
Recently completed a K1, all works well.
A mod here which I know is nqr ( not quite right )
is fitting a simple internal charger circuit so the batt pack
can be left in situ.
The original cover is also used, with the smaller speaker.
Fit is what could be politely called snug

Hi folks
Interested to read the thead on electric fences.
They are very common here around New Zealand,
even in semi rural areas. The trick apparently is not the
actual voltage which hurts, it's a gradual rise time which
causes muscle contraction. I suspect this is why some
fences are hard
Hi folks
K3 going perfectly fine here.
Just curious about an odd audio buzz
in the rear of the chassis under heavy
SSB modulation. It sounds like
transformer or frame slightly loose,
nothing appears loose or un-done.
Noticed when using the M1 audio

hear it

Although I have to agree that everything in my rig also seems very secure to
