Gents,
Looks like I forgot to share the outcome of this story.
In the end, I got new MAX534 and replaced it, and everything
is now fine. I can't tell you whether the chip was deffective
from the beginning, or it was damaged by EMC during my
soldering. Anyway, things are OK for quite some time.
Hi Phil,
I've seen similar approaches for regulating the heater voltage a vintage
Russian military tube receiver. There's a series resistor in the circuit that's
connected when the batteries are fresh-charged, and this resistor is bypassed
with a switch when the battery voltage falls inside
Generally it depends on what you're doing in your radio hobby. Practically all
types of connectors can be (and have been) used for our amateur radio purposes
with more than acceptable results. When it comes to RF measurements that need
to be done repeatedly with high precision (especially
Don,
You're absolutely right. The only limitation with such approach will be
that you can't use KAT2 as internal auto-tuner, and you'll have to bring
the KAT100 external tuner to the portable setup (adding more weight and
power consumption).
I'm in a similar cross-road with my K2. I finally
Hi John,
These peaks could be nonlinearities from your scope amplifier.

Season's Greetings Elecrafters:
This weekend I had a QSO with a West coast station that related that he was

The real ADC resolution - the one specified as ENoB (Effective Number of Bits)

always less than the theoretical one (written with big letters in first
datasheet page).
IMHO there are a bunch of parameters more interesting than this theoretical one,
like ADC linearity monotonicity, SFDR,
Dear Elecraft Team,
Is it possible to publish the KX3 phase noise measurements on this link:

Thanks in advance. Regards,

Thanks Wayne,
I'm not in hurry at all, just wondered what are the measurements of
the youngest Elecraft family member (not that I listen at measurements
from my speaker, but just of pure curiosity).
(And guys, don't smile/laugh - everyone of us is just looking for a good
excuse to say ...OK,
Dave,
I totally agree - there's some unexplainable magic to me that when being
converted from US to EU,
prices somehow keep their numerical values (while at the same time currency is
changed). This is
valid for whole EU, not just UK.
And just because I don't like the reseller prices (and I
Gents,
I think it's ESD, not EMP. When the latter occurs, people have more troubles
than usually...

Gents,
Today I got my replacement MAX534 from Digikey. PCB rework went
fine, but this time I decided to put a high-quality DIP16 socket. If
things go well for a while, I can solder the IC to the socket to avoid
contact problems...
All tests went well - the transceiver power can now be fine
Hi Gary,
I have built only 1 K2, but mine has the same power consumption (240mA)
during RX. So I think your current consumption is OK. You can have some
deviations of your consumption because of LCD backlight mode (day/night),
S-meter mode (bar vs dot), post-mixer amp Q22 biasing so don't worry
George,
Thanks for reminding that we should keep those sweet K2s alive and in good
health. Typically, if you have your antenna attached to the K2 ANT connector,
the DC path through R67 R68 (RF Board) won't allow a static built-up. But as
you already shared, the question is what happens when the
Hi everyone,
I have an issue with my K2 internal power amplifier. After completing the
kit assembly I went on to pass through the transmit test procedures with
a good dummy load, but I got the famous HiCur over-current warning
message when using the TUNE button (any band, any POWER setting).
Hi Don,
Thanks for your suggestions. I disconnected pin 2 of MAX534 and
applied external control voltage there (simulating a healthy channel
A of the DAC). Fortunately, now I can control the power output from
the transceiver from 0 to MAX. The sine wave looks undistorted and
exactly on the
Hello fellow hams,
One more K2 (#7293) was born this week in Europe - thanks to the Elecraft team
for designing this kit and making it available for the ham crowd.
The radio is now assembled, but I have small issues with the testing. During
the initial testing on 40m reception the radio was
Hi Don,
Thanks for your answer. The output of the 8V voltage regulator is just
perfect (for a 10% device) - 7.98V. I was wondering why I get 500mV
voltage drop across Q1 Q2, but if you say that's OK, then I'm fine.
Slightly offtopic - I had also another failure of 2N7000 - again in Control
