Dave, With that IC running at the slow rate of 4800 baud, there should be no problem with using a socket for it. If you also have the switch for the KBT2 option installed, there will be a tighter fit, but it should clear with a low profile socket. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/17/2019 1:30 PM, Dave

I am building the KI02 RS 232 interface module for the K2 transceiver. Is there any reason why I can't use a low profile IC socket for this part? The reason I am building this one is to replace the old one in my K2. The old one died and I suspect it is the IC Max1406. Your thoughts, please.

Due to a solder bridge on pins 2 and 3 of P2 on the control board of my K2, I let the smoke out of U6, U7, and U8. U6 is mounted in an IC socket. Is there any reason other than the cost, for not putting U7 and U8 in sockets when I replace them? Thanks Scott N5SM

Scott, Sockets are not recommended - in the RF paths, they do create additional impedances that should be avoided, and they do reduce reliability unless they are air-tight (machine pin type) sockets due to slow oxidation of the metals. If you prefer to take your chances, go ahead, but use good
