Cliff, The KX1 has no fuses inside, one should always fuse the power cord. The board removes quite easily, but yes, the paddle jack does catch a bit on one side of the enclosure top. Just grasp the paddle jack and pull that side of the board out of the enclosure first, the rest will follow.

As Don said, you just need to bend the case out a little to clear the keyer connector.  You didn't mention it, but I assume you removed the tuning knob. I  had a similar failure to turn on a while ago and found that the switch wasn't working.   I just sprayed it with contact cleaner and worked
