Re: [Elecraft] K3 to KAT500
The internal 100 Watt ATU is really a fine piece of work. It is quiet and fast - displaying no bad habits. I cannot say that about the KAT500! The latter has a habit of retuning in the middle of a QSO. It is disconcerting, making noises and flashing various lights and sometimes kicking the KPA500 into standby. Even placing the tuner in MAN does not keep it quiet. I would recommend waiting on that purchase until the bugs have been worked out. Elecraft is currently working on the problem - in the interim I have some very exensive paper weights. [Elecraft] KXPA100 Kit problem, need help !!!
Hi, I just received my KXPA100 + KXAT100 yesterday. After a careful building session. I did a few tests. Frist of all, I use a 300W dummy into my Elecraft W2 power meter for power accuracy reading, so no antenna at this point, no PC cable, only the basic connection. The parameters in the KX3 : PA MODE = ON. when set to OFF, the KXPA100 is acting as it should. The TUN PWR = normal. The KX3 show the TEMP of the KXPA100 = OK. I put the KX3 at 5W, hit the TUNE button on the KX3 = 5W, SWR reading OK. Power meter W2 reading OK. So, the antenna tune seems to act as normal without any doubt. The worst part.. Now put SSB, if I push the PTT without talking, I get a steady 5W power reading on the W2 yes in SSB without talking !! Northing could be heard on my receiving K2 that is beside the KX3. If I put the KX3 at 10W, hit the TUNE button I get a result of 8-9W. But again,in SSB !!! And the worst part, if I set 11W on the KX3, all the same tests give me a result of a steady 80W output, no matter if I set 11W thru 100W it stills at 80W !!! Even if the mode is SSB or CW. I monitored myself in my good old K2. If I use only the KX3, everything works as it should. But immediately when and I turn on the PA in the KX3 menu and I try to transmit, I cannot hear anything in my K2, no matter the power I choose, even with less than 5W or 3W. the KX3 cannot be heard in my K2. The only way to hear myself is when the KXPA100 is disengaged in the menu or switched off. All basic tests to showed me good communication between the KX3 and KXPA100, all went good. Another important thing, the receive RX part when antennas are connected thru the KXPA100 is OK. the reception RX with or without the KXPA100 engaged (ON or OFF) is OK. The strange problem seems to be only in TX. I really need help on this one. Thanks in advance. 73 J-F VA2SS -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KXPA100-Kit-problem-need-help-tp7583286.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Push To Talk
Another solution for this, at least for CW, is to get a WinKeyerUSB. Those have two outputs, a PTT and a Key line. There is a variable, programmable, delay between when PTT is activated and when the Key line becomes active. I use the PTT to key my amp and 30 mS later key the K2. The delay can be made very long, up to at least 990 mS, in 10 mS increments. 73 de dave ab9ca/4 On 1/24/14 11:43 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: Lloyd, If you don't like my fix for this situation, you can use a footswitch to activate your amp and switch your preamp off-line before hitting the paddles - just don't make any mistakes and get things in the wrong order. [Elecraft] Question about knobs
I have a question about the knobs on the K3. I have my knobs on the Shift-Width position. When I just push the Width knob one time it says HI 3.50 next time I press the same knob again it says BW 4.00 on the display. I have the FC at *1.50. Why don’t both times I press the knob say the same thing? I think from monitoring my signal on Spectra Plus, that I am transmitting at about 4K but receiving at 3.50 or so. Are my assumptions correct? Or why can I not have both the BWs at 4K? I can move the FC to 2.0 and transmit and receive at 4K, but when I try to record using my DVR, the bottom end of those I record shifts up and I lose the bottom 200 to 300 Hz. Not what I want to do on a faithful recording. Strange but probably cockpit problems by me. Re: [Elecraft] 2 dB better reception in JT65 mode
Peter, EME is all about detecting the weakest signal (e.g. MDS) so I would attribute this to the low-phase noise of the K3 LO. In fact one of the determining factors for my to chose it as my eme IF radio. Dynamic range would be more important in HF where very strong signals are present at adjacent frequencies; something all eme'rs would love to hear! The other attributes that make the K3 ideal as eme IF are: 1) Excellent transverter interface, KVX3 2) Excellent frequency stability with the EXREF option 3) Design for CW 4) Design for soundcard interface for data modes. I just restored my 16-foot dish for 1296 reception so will be looking for weak signals from the Moon with my K3/10 + 1296/28 transverter. enjoy the extra dB! 73, Ed - KL7UW - Subject: [Elecraft] 2 dB better reception in JT65 mode Message-ID: 000d01cf194f$ceafc410$6c0f4c30$@pa2v.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii I have compared my brand new K3 against my IC756pro2 in JT65b mode while doing EME on 432 MHz. I just wonder, is this because the famous low noise architecture or just the clean audio of the K3? The K3 is connected via the line-out to a Delta44 soundcard at the PC. Re: [Elecraft] Question about knobs
OZ, The knob function changes from Width to Hi-Cut when you push it. Turning the knob changes the receive passband width when in the WIDTH position (look at the LED to determine the current state) or will change the Audio High Frequency end of the bandpass when in the Hi-Cut position. That knob and the one to its left Shift/Lo-Cut work in tandem. When set for Shift and Width, the SHIFT knob controls the center frequency and the WIDTH knob controls the width. When in LO-CUT/HI-CUT the left knob controls the lower frequency edge of the passband and the right knob controls the high frequency edge of the passband. In this case, there is no use of the center frequency (it is the midpoint of the low and high frequencies. These knobs do not change the transmit bandpass, only receive. You will likely find it easier to use the LO-CUT/HI-CUT on voice modes and the SHIFT/WIDTH for CW. For voice communications, you can only cut a little from the low frequency end while maintaining intelligibility, but you can cut the high end substantially to reduce QRM. If you use SHIFT/WIDTH in voice modes, you will find that you have to adjust the center frequency with the SHIFT knob as you adjust the WIDTH to maintain an intelligible response. Using the LO/HI CUT knobs for voice may help you with your recordings too because you can set the low and high ends as you choose. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/25/2014 12:23 PM, Larry Wassmann wrote: I have a question about the knobs on the K3. Re: [Elecraft] Question about knobs
Larry, If you look closely, what happens when you tap the Width knob is that it changes from Shift-Width to Hi-Lo, and displays the high frequency limit momentarily. When you tap it again, it changes back to Shift-Width, and displays the width momentarily. I think I've got this next part right: The upper and lower frequencies are calculated from FC +/- BW/2. When the center frequency is set to 1.5 kHz and the bandwidth is 4.0 kHz, the calculated upper frequency is 3.5 kHz and the calculated lower frequency is -0.5 kHz (i.e. the other side of zero beat). The K3's DSP imposes a low-frequency cutoff at 200 Hz, so although the Lo frequency may read 0.0 (it won't go negative), the actual lowest frequency that is passed is 0.2 kHz. Therefore, despite your Width setting, the actual bandwidth you hear with this combination is 3.3 kHz (3.5 - 0.2). What gets transmitted in turn may be different, depending on which roofing filter is enabled as your transmit filter (e.g. if it's a 2.7 kHz filter, that's an upper limit on the transmitted bandpass regardless of what the DSP is set to). If, on the other hand, you use the Hi/Lo Cut settings, you can set the Lo to 0.2 (no point in going lower, because lower frequencies are not passed through the DSP anyway), and then adjust the Hi to 4.2 (that's as high as it will go - the DSP imposes an upper cutoff frequency of 4.2 kHz). If you check the FC and BW by tapping those controls, you will see that they correspond to FC = 2.2 and BW = 4.0, exactly as the formulas would predict (FC = (LO+HI)/2, BW = HI-LO). 73, Rich VE3KI W3OZ wrote: I have a question about the knobs on the K3. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Push To Talk
Lloyd One option for the K2/transverter hot switching problem on CW is to build a sequencer which breaks the TX IF line, like this one: http://www.qsl.net/ve3sma/3OutputSequencerForK2.pdf This only works, however, if you are running very low IF power from the K60XV (or at least run the 10W TX IF through an attenuator so the K2 PA sees a decent match at all times). 73, Steve VE3SMA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] 2 dB better reception in JT65 mode
There is a lot of Just use any old soundcard, even a dongle type of advice about digital modes. I went from nearly 100% CW to nearly 100% JT65 and JT9 on HF so I've tried a few things. I could decode down to about -18 or so with the built in sound card. I got an EMU 0204 for use with an LP-PAN and decided to try it for JT65/9. I could decode down to -23 and occasionally lower. I tried a SignaLink USB and can usually decode down to -21 and sometimes -22. ANY sound card will work for sound card modes, just like ANY piece of wirewill work for an antenna. But there is a difference in sound cards for digital modes and there is a reason I use a TH7 at 60' instead of a mag loop antenna despite the fact that they both work. John, The 18 MHz crystal is low profile but the 4 MHz crystal is not in the standard KPA100 kit. Yes, a low profile 4 MHz crystal should work OK in the KPA100, it is only used for the clock to the MCU. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/25/2014 3:50 PM, John Cooper wrote: Are both the 4mhz and 18mhz crystals low profile in kpa100? Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] RE: [K3] RX Audio/AGC
I my be wrong Mike, but I don't think the AF Limiter is active *IF* the AGC is active my understanding is it is only active if AGC is *OFF* Quote from pg 15 of K3 owners manual D10.pdf: AGC off/on (when off, an AF limiter is available; see CONFIG:AF LIM) also pg 53: AF LIM NOR (Advanced.) Adjustable AF output limiter for use when AGC is turned off. This can protect your ears if a large signal appears. Signals or noise above the threshold will sound highly distorted due to the limiting action, reminding you to back down the AF or RF gain. Typical settings for those who often turn AGC off are 17 to 23; some experimentation will be required. On 1/25/2014 6:35 PM, mikerodgerske5...@yahoo.com wrote: Hi Knut, Sorry I cannot. I don't have that capability. I might be able to record it on my iPhone. I'm going to try to remedy it with EQ. I think it's bumping the AF limiter providing the limiter is in the circuit with AGC on. It just seemed to me that since rf gain cured it, AGC should too, so I wouldn't have to turn RF down for one station and up for others. Gets old after a while. And not talking about s9 signals either. Thanks Mike R RIP- Mr 500. STP's Andy Granatelli from racing fans everywhere. It's very difficult to help with just a verbal description of the problem. I have never heard any pops or clicks from the K3 AGC. I know what it sounds like. I use HDSDR with slow AGC setting with my Afedri SDR and it's terrible on strong signals. The person currently in charge of HDSDR has promised to look at it. On USB it seems high voices will pop/crack just like if AGC was off and hitting the AF limiter. Reducing RF Gain clears it up. Turning agc threshold down has no effect. Is there a agc setting that might correct this? [Elecraft] K3 - No Power Out
I was working stations on and off today. Came back into the shack this evening and tried to work a VK on 15m and I had no output power. I turned the power dial and it was at 0 watts, no problem just turn it up. Normally I would progress a 1/10 of a watt at a time up to 12 watts then it would increase at 1 watt intervals. This time it started at 0 and incremented at 1 watt intervals immediately, strange. After setting the output to 100 watts and then depressing the transmit button for a second it would transmit at 0 watts as displayed in the vfo b and vfo A would display --. I've disconnected the external devices to the acc connection (microham mkII in this case along with a KAT500) as well as the rs-232 connection to be sure an outside source was not controlling the rig. I have the KPA3 installed and the rig has been back to Elecraft to have the gold pins installed. Any ideas? [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, The week has been filled with the sounds of many trucks going up and down the mountain. All this traffic has made the previously soggy gravel road quite smooth and hard. The local motorcycle folks are buzzing up and down where the larger trucks had improved the conditions. I was repotting my lilac bushes when they passed. A minute later I smelled a scent which I hadn't sensed in a number of years: Castrol. Then a flood of memories came back; many, many hours at the track. Conditions have been pretty good this week. Today I was scanning 10 meters where I heard many signals. I also heard some very slow digital mode; a variety of tones of a second or longer each. A little further up the band I recognized RTTY and even further up I found the CW folks. This is inverted to what happens on the lower bands but there was no one below 28,100 kHz. Please join us tomorrow. 14050 kHz at 2300z Sunday (3 PM PST Sunday) 7045 kHz at 0200z Monday (6 PM PST Sunday) 73, Kevin.
