[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2022-07-24 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

I woke up to rain hitting the roof.  Then I looked out the window
and found dense fog.  It was fog rain condensing from the trees.  The
sun came out and it got hot (85F).  Then I heard reports from MI, IA,
CA, and TX.  Texas beat California by a few degrees.  However, the
lowest reading was also in California where Brian was still in the fog.
I remember how Midwest corn would curl up tight in August when there was
no rain in sight. Hopefully, there is a break in their drought soon.

I have not seen the Rufous Hummingbirds since the Anna's moved in.
I will keep a watch for them.  The propagation was as predicted.  QSB on
most everyone from a medium rate to a fast flutter.  But signals were
strong enough to read on the peaks. Losing a verb is easier to repair
than losing a noun.  You know what got done but not to whom.  Context
normally provides a clue.

  On 14050.5 kHz at 2200z:

NO8V - John - MI

K4TO - Dave - KY

K6XK - Roy - IA

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

W8OV - Dave - TX

  On 7047.5 kHz at z:

KG7V - Marv - WA

WM5F - Dwight - ID

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

K6PJV - Dale - CA

   Until next week 73,

  Kevin.  KD5ONS

Re: [Elecraft] 20M Elecraft Net July 24, 2022

2022-07-24 Thread Brian Maynard
I wanted to add one relay in today’s 20M net: K6WDE, Dave, Utah, KX3, #4599
(thanks NS7P, Phil, for the relay)

Also I had a few queries on the net days and times. All the nets meet on
Sunday. The 20M net meets at 1800Z on 14.3035 MHz (Eric WB9JNZ Net Control).
The 40M net meets at 1900Z on 7.280 MHz with Steve, WM6P Net Control. The CW
nets are at 2300Z on 14.050 MHz and 0030Z (Monday) on 7.047 MHz.

[Elecraft] Switchbox for KX3

2022-07-24 Thread Zbigniew Tyrlik

> 3. switchbox KX3 to signalink/mike+headphones (her...@comcast.net)

I did something like that few times using analogue mixer, with 2 separate
stereo buses.

One bus is for audio from the rig(s) - first K3, FTDX5000, Yaesu 7900 into the
computers with headphone monitoring;
One bus is for mics ( in my case CM-500 & Heil 781) and line out from computer,
into the rigs.

It was Behringer, I think 1824 mixer.

Second generation used Motu M4 with KX3, for 781 & line out of computer -> KX3,
and KX3-> computer + headphone monitoring. After setting levels in both
directions, it worked nicely. No signalink needed.

Re: [Elecraft] switchbox KX3 to signalink/mike+headphones

2022-07-24 Thread Walter Underwood
It might work to split it into two problems.

MFJ makes some boxes to switch microphones and rigs, 2:1, 1:2, and 2:2. Maybe
more.

https://mfjenterprises.com/products/mfj-1260

There are also simple 2- and 4-channel mixers that would do it.

I use a simple splitter for the headphones and drive everything all the time.

https://smile.amazon.com/Belkin-RockStar-5-Jack-Headphone-Splitter/dp/B00904WS2K/

This is a headphone distribution amp (build with op-amps), so you can adjust
gain for each output. $29.

https://smile.amazon.com/Behringer-HA400-Ultra-Compact-4-Channel-Headphone/dp/B000KIPT30/

Rigblaster makes some nice stuff, though I’m not that familiar with it. I think
they have boxes that would replace the Signalink and do the switching.

I respect that this could be whipped up.

But

I wanted to take advantage of the user community to see if there were slick

I made something similar: I wanted to breakout the mic PTT line from my
IC9700 to control a sequencer (which was already wired to control preamps,
TR relays and amplifier PTT's).

I found 8-pin connectors on Amazon that would mate to the IC9700 mic jack,
used RG-174 for shielded cable for the mic audio jumper inside a small
aluminum box and used cat-5e for mic cable jumper from radio to switch box
and added a clamp-on ferrite bead at the radio end (for ac hum/noise
rejection).

I used 4-pin mic connectors to route the PTT to/from the sequencer (and
using more cat-5e for that jumper). I added a toggle switch to defeat radio
PTT if I was running my K3 with the sequencer to avoid accidental keying of
the IC9700 by the sequencer.
http://www.kl7uw.com/IC9700_Hints

For interfacing KX3 mic/signal link, you will need a four conductor mini
phone jack to mate into the radio. They can be found with a little
searching.

I made a computer interface for my KX3 using a West Mountain Rigblaster
Nohmic:
http://www.kl7uw.com/KX3_Computer_Interface.htm

These are NOT hard to do projects. No surface-mount soldering of computer
components, involved,

So true, Robert!

My K2 got soaked in a giant rainstorm in Virginia a few Field Days ago in one
of those fine, fulminating downpours-at-midnight with lightning and general
spookiness. We had to run for our lives into the truck and forgot all about the
poor rig sitting stoically on the picnic table.

In the morning, the damage was assessed: transistors standing in pools;
resistors barely keeping their chins above water. And no power-up. We tried
everything to dry it out. Leaving it in the sun on the dash of the truck.
Q-Tips. But as FD approached it was clear that it wasn't going to dry in time.
My sons and I were way bummed out and I felt very stupid.

So how's this for good luck: it so happened that another ham was in the same
campground, noticed us, and *brought over his wife's blow dryer* to help us
out. We got the K2 on the air just in time, but when I went to invite that ham
to operate with us later on, he'd already left. I'll never forget what he did
for us.

I'll bet that's the closest anyone on this reflector has come to killing his
K2... but K2's evidently Die Hard.

This year the K2 again showed no ill effects from its near-drowning and
performed flawlessly and continues to amaze me. It's simple enough to operate
and no simpler, making understanding and using it within the reach of even my
youngest son.

We and our K2 have been through far too much together to part ways. K2 forever,
baby.

Re: [Elecraft] Stacking K3-line: variation on recent thread

2022-07-24 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
The K3/K3S does not have the extra support that is but into the KAT500. I would
not want to stack the KPA500’s weight on top of it.

In my case, I built nice wood racks for each of my K3(s)/KPA500/KAT500s. The
units sit, from bottom to top in the order:
K3, P3, KPA500, KAT500, and K3S, P3, KPA500, KAT500.
This order allows me to cable the units together nicely and has the antenna
cables coming out the top of the stack where they can easily be managed to the
switch boxes and antenna control system. One big advantage of this setup is the
ability to pull the cabinets forward and to the side to easily connect things
to the rear of the units. I _wish_ I had the space for the desk to be out from
the wall (like the big contesters), but that isn’t the space I have.

Re: [Elecraft] switchbox KX3 to signalink/mike+headphones

2022-07-24 Thread w1az
I built a switchbox for this a few years ago.  I found 6pdt toggle
switch on Mouser (Mouser part number 229-ET610N13-Z).  I used 3 poles
for the mic connection including PTT.  I didn't include a capacitor as
someone else suggested.  I had been using the signalink cable, which
doesn't include a cap, with no problem.  I only used two poles for the
speaker connection as signalink has a monaural input.  I suppose I could
have connected both speaker signal lines to the analog output but it has
worked fine as it is.  I built in a plastic box(aluminum faceplate) I
bought at Radioshack (which gives you some idea of how long ago I built it).

Re: [Elecraft] switchbox KX3 to signalink/mike+headphones

2022-07-24 Thread Louandzip via Elecraft
I built something like that using two 2 pole 4 position wafer switches to
switch between 4 radios.  One switch is for the input, and the the other for
the audio output.  I also put a 2 pole 2 throw toggle switch in the audio
output to switch between phones and a small audio amplifier driving a spkr. You
can see it in my QRZ.com photo mounted under the shelf below the Daiwa meter.

It would take a four pole double throw (mic, PTT, L Audio, R Audio)
or two DPDT switches.
