I am just finishing my 76th K2. Let me build your Elecraft kit. My prices are
reasonable (I just love building the kits) and the results are a finished
radio, fully aligned and is ready to enjoy.

Is the Binocular core used in the BL1 balun the same grade as the
binocular core used in the K2's TX strip?

I have both the Alinco and MFJ switcher and they both work FB, I have not been
bothered by hash with either. The Alinco is nice with meter and adjustable
output. Tim W4YN

Like others, I have been using the Alinco 330 switching supply for a couple
of years now, and no detectible RF interference.

I have used the Alinco 330MV for a few years in my shack with no detectable
noise until last year. Operating portable with the 330 sitting on top of my
K2/100, I did get a little hash on 17m and 20m. It wasn't bad, but with a twist
of the noise offset knob, it was shifted away. Also, if I moved
Hi Mike,
I'm not sure what you mean by grade but the core in the BL1 is type 43
ferrite which is the same as used in the K2 transmitter. The BL1 core is,
of course, much larger in size.

If you have access to any kind of tape recorder, practice sending while
recording. Then listen to your cw from the tape. By now you have
an idea of what decent cw should sound like. This way you can be your
own coach. Go back for another session and work on the imperfections
you heard on
Paul,
There is a good series of articles on the G5RV at http://www.cebik.com
-- reading those would probably help a lot with the balun questions. A
classic G5RV should have low SWR and exhibit gain on 20m but requires a
tuner for other bands. Perhaps yours is double length?
Try my LP-Rotor freeware program at www.telepostinc.com/n8lp.html
It works with Hy-Gain DCU-1, and Rotorcard and Rotor-EZ from Idiom Press. It
works standalone, and it also can accept DDE commands from TRX-Manager. There
is a help file on the website that you can read through before downloading
I have recently retired and can't suppress the urge to build so I'm going to
part with my K2 #2260 so I can build another Elecraft K2.
2260 was built by me, its only owner, an experienced (retired) Electronics
Technician.

Paul,
If your impedance matching ladder line is of the correct length, the
impedance looking into it can be close to 50 ohms on ONE band! That may
well be 40 meters in your particular case.
Your 'double balun' idea MAY work, but you will still be running the coax at
a high SWR and that can
I have a KX1 that has worked flawlessly until now.
(Just got my 1000 miles/watt award. Cool!)
I run it off batteries and listen to it at night before bed. I fell
asleep and
forgot to turn it off. A day later, I discovered it just sitting there
with
very nearly dead batteries and the left-most

Good grief, guys. Paul has the solution already. A G5RV is simply a
dipole with some magic consisting of a combination of balanced and coax
line which makes it look like 50 ohms on certain frequencies.
But Paul has a really nice balanced tuner. Now if it were me, I would
eliminate the
I'll add this to Jack's excellent summary: The open wire feed line on a G5RV
is never balanced, since it's an off-center fed wire. That's good, because
that feed line contributes a lot by providing vertical, low angle radiation
on the lower frequencies. A horizontal wire needs to be up near 100

You are SO RIGHT, Brian!
I was reading G5RV and thinking Windom.
Thanks!

This may be a bias on my part, but I remember the first switching supplies
that came out. They were full of hash which gave them a bad name. Switchers
are no doubt better now, but they still are capable of putting out hash
(depending on your shack and antenna environment). I personally like
I'm not sure I understand the K2's SSB C r firmware command or if I am
using it properly.
Am I correct in stating that it's main purpose is to use a different
compression (usually 1-1 ) than that which is set by SSB C ?
I use my K2 to run PSK 31 (mostly on 20 meters) and would like to avoid
Tom,
You are correct that the RTTY ('r' indicator) mode gives you a compression
setting that is independent of the SSB mode (USB or LSB) - when RTTY mode is
selected, if one enters the menu and selects SSBC, it will display SSBCr to
let you know that this is the setting for RTTY mode as
I am at the point where the first check of the front and control panels check
out OK and all seems good but I was wondering how others attached the minature
coax to the banana plugs for the RF Probe construction. It looks as if one
would destroy the plug as the hole where I think you solder is
