Hi Joe!
I was under the impression that you had to switch to LineIn mic input to be
able to use the LineIn. Regardless of what is connected to it: actual mic audio
or sound card.
Am i wrong? That's how i've been using my Signalink anyway...

The K3 has three external audio inputs: the front panel microphone jack,
the rear panel microphone jack, and the rear panel Line In jack. You can
use configuration settings to select among microphone input only (line
input muted), line input only (microphone inputs muted), or both

For that very reason I tend to not share much of the things I have developed,
modified, invented etc.
I've gotten to the point my time is more valuable than trying to explain it.
I'll just be quiet about the rest of the fun stuff I have working here ;)

Is this a good gen purpose soldering station? Good or bad?

In the WTCPT If you want to change the temperature you will have to
change the tip. I have been using the WESD51 which has a knob
adjustable temperature setting. During the build of my K3 being able to
adjust the temp based on what I was soldering was very handy. I have

Bill,
Absolutely bulletproof... I have owned one for over fifteen years and
have built
three K2's with it. Superb for its price point - ~$140-$150.
It is ESD safe, has over 35 different tips in the 600, 700, and 800
degree heat-range,
a quick disconnect plug for the iron on the power unit,
I'm using a WESD51 station as well and like it.
Turn the knob to change the temp is nice.
Also huge number of tips available...

My WTCPT wore out (base cracked, etc.) after 15-20
years; still usable but ... . I looked around and
ended up replacing it with the WESD51 for the
reasons cited below. As I recall the price was
about the same because the WTCPT is now out of
production.

I just looked in my K3 and this is what i have:
i'm using a Signalink USB box for DATA A mode and i set the MIC to be LineIn.
The MIC+LIN option in that case displays Not Applicable.
When i switch to USB - the Mic input is switched to whatever i had it set to
(rP.L in my case).
So it does
I few day ago someone had posted how the plugged in the power cord wrong (moved
over 1 position)
on his K3 and wound up damaging the connector when the shorted the + Supply to
the Neg PowerPole.
Note: It's a good Idea to fuse the power cord so that the fuse will blow if
this happens.

The problem with this model is the lack of a temperature control.
I much prefer the Hakko brand.

Hi Bill,
No financial interest but one of the best bargains and accessories
for a K3 owner is the KE7X book. What you want is in Appendix C. Has a chart
of PER'S; band, mode, ant, RX VFO.

Hi all
Like most here, we have never had the option with temperature control.
Personally, you don't really require it. I think my current station (I
have a few) is at 400 and I just touch it.
I've soldered everything from SMT to PL259s with the same iron WTCPT.
Sometimes I even think to

Heck, it is an even better plan to just turn off the power supply
before making any such connection, whether it is a computer, radio, or

But, shoot, this could happen to anyone in a hurry or in a moment's
distraction. My most frequent connectivity faux pas is to confuse the

Higher temps when doing through hole soldering can allow one to get off the

might occur when dwelling with a cooler tip. At least that's been the jist or

Hi Jim,
I have a K3 that developed a similar problem:
My K3 was build by Elecraft in 2011 with the only extras added by myself
later being the KXV3A transverter interface, some CW filter and the KDVR3

You guys got me thinking that I bought my Hakko 936 in 2004 to build a
newly purchased K2. So, I have had it for ten years. It has been in the

projects as well as a bunch of bench work. It has performed well, while
I did a photo log of my assembly of the K3 (S/N 8312) this last month. I sure
