Re: [Elecraft] KPA500/K3 AUX bus specification
Bill, The Y-BOX v2.1 and single $20 25ft M/F "HD15" cable could let you remote the KPA1500 or KPA500 to the garage quite nicely, including remote power power on/off via a K3 macro. I haven't tested a cable that long, but know of no reason that it won't work as long as the voltage drop isn't significant. Maybe a pair of these high quality cables in series would work too (50 ft)? Marv, You are quite welcome. If any of you do not know what we are referring to, go to my website www.w3fpr.com and in the left column, click on the "Noisy K3" article. Re: [Elecraft] CW AGC settings
Don, I just read your article to see what the hubbub was about with AGC. I live in a rural area in the woods so noise is really not a problem. I was taught a long time ago to keep the AGC off for weak signal reception and it stuck with me. Those were the S line days. And in your article you mention ops that can copy into the noise and that certainly describes me, hi. Its kind of an ESP thing. Thanks for all your valuable info here on the reflector. Try that and see whether it shows the same as the display. There are 2 pieces to the SWR - there is the sensor part and then there is the display part. There is a possibility that the sensor is doing OK, but the display end of things may be what is causing the problem. KPA1500 Utility uses a different path (but the same sensor) for its display of SWR than the front panel display. In either case, it does seem (by my first guess) that there is a solder or cable connection in the KPA1500 that is heat sensitive. How high does the SWR go? If it stays below 1.5, it will cause no problem despite your concern for that behavior. Unless I am mistaken, the SWR indication on the K3 shows only the SWR of what is connected to the K3, which is the amplifier input 73, Don W3FPR On 4/29/2018 2:25 PM, Mike Crownover wrote: > Don, > > Thanks for the comment. Re: [Elecraft] KPA3 removal
Hi Martin; No need to remove the KPA3 to test the LPA, just set KPA3 to "not inSt" in the config menu. Then you can go to 12W and go thru the bands and see how it does. Also you can run the 5W TX gain cal using the K3 Utility (or TUNE at exactly 5.0W on all bands) to see what happens. The resulting "TXGN LP" numbers are typically below 60, higher numbers indicate something wrong, or you may get an ERR TXG. Go to config menu item "TXGN LP", then step thru the bands to see each one. Or just get the results using the K3 Utility. On the older LPAs like yours, R18 is for Q2, the _*D*_*_river._* It is a different device than the two finals, Q5 (R19) and Q4 (R24). I believe the Bias increase is 300ma for each device, please contact support@elecraft for the procedure on this older LPA. Hi Steve; Your FPF, Front Panel Flash, is corrupt. Confirm by going to Config Menu "XV1 ON", then tap 1 thru 9 and you will probably see a transverter (usually 9) set to "YES" when you have none. In fact, it seems unreasonable to NOT put it in the manual RS232, for example, is runs UN-terminated, and the limit on distance is the capacitance of the cable, not it's physical length. Many years ago, the RS232 spec was note that capacitance was the limitation. The way to think about this is that UN-terminated circuits are analyzed as "lumped parameter" systems, where bandwidth limits boil down to degradation of rise time by RC time constants. The source Z is low, the receiving Z is high. TERMINATED systems function as transmission lines, and everything we know about traansmission lines applies. Andy, You'll find the band outputs on the KPA500 aux connector (BAND0-3) are quite reliable and fast when it comes to detecting band change outputs. They appear to be flipped/set quite early in the band change sequence/exchange between the K3 and amp, certainly before RF is applied (yay !). At least I've not caught my K3/KPA500(s) doing anything silly in this regard yet. My only gripe with the BAND outputs is that 60m was encoded as and not on this 4-bit interface, which means telling the difference between the amp being physically OFF and/or on 60m requires a separate monitoring circuit... >:| 73 Matthew VK5ZM On 30 April 2018 at 09:07, ANDY DURBINwrote: > Don, > > > Thanks for the reply. > > > I'm familiar with the PC interface and have, in the hope of tracking down > a problem, built a logger that uses that bus to interrogate the KPA500 at > 10 Hz.
