Re: [Elecraft] OT: Kidde smoke detectors

2020-10-24 Thread Mooneer Salem
FWIW, we use a Nest Protect here (hardwired into A/C, too) and haven't had
problems with RFI. I imagine it'd be a different story if it didn't use
Wi-Fi, though.

Speaking of Wi-Fi, our Ubiquiti access point required at least four
Ethernet chokes, a third party PoE injector and CAT7 shielded cable to get
the RFI down to an acceptable level. That was a fairly surprising thing to
have happen but I guess PoE in general is well known to be really bad for
RFI (and the limited antenna possibilities at the QTH I'm sure didn't help
either).

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Kidde smoke detectors

2020-10-24 Thread Mark Goldberg
I have an older wired alarm system that uses serial data, and it is
indeed awful. The serial data is quite slow but it has no filtering. I
added an LC filter that works well enough to keep the RFI out of my
station, at least down to the level of what comes from my neighbors
and keeps my station from setting off the alarm system (most of the
time).

At my son's house, he and neighbors have some SimpliSafe and other
wireless alarm systems and the HF Ham bands are wiped out by the RFI.
I have no idea what nominal frequency range or signalling they use. I
would expect for battery life they would not transmit often, but
whatever they do to create the RFI is continuous.

I also have a hard wired smoke alarm from Kidde. That uses a DC
interconnect between units. I believe any unit that goes off pulls a
line up to about 9 V and they all go off. They are kind of cagey as to
exactly what the interconnect signal is though, so I may be a little
off. I have not detected any issues with RFI or susceptibility. Those
may indeed work for you.

I do have a Spectrum Analyzer and multiple types of clamp on probes
and antennas but have not taken the time to do any quantitative
measurements of any of these.

Having to tell the Fire Department that the fire alarm is false is not
a good thing.

That might be the wrong thing to do. We had a number of wired
interconnected units in our house, but the one closest to the shack and
antennas started alarming every time I transmitted on 40m with more than
100 W, and because they were interconnected, the alarm was heard everywhere
in the house. I replaced that one detector with a battery-only,
non-interconnected unit and the problem went away - the non-interconnected
unit has no RFI problem, and neither does the interconnected part of the
system elsewhere in the house.

I would expect wireless interconnected units to be less of a problem than
wired ones. If one of them did have an RFI problem, it would be easy to
replace it with a no-interconnected unit at the vulnerable location to see
if that fixed the problem.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2020-10-24 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

It was a cool, gray week.  I'm sure the last hummingbird has left.
A front moved through and the temperature is dropping.  I think it rose
to 42 today.   Tomorrow night should drop to 23 degrees, with snow by
morning.  The plants are in the house.  One good thing is the freezing
weather makes wood easier to split. The daily frost heaves work into the
ends, expanding any cracks present.

The sun has fewer spots than last weekend.  The solar wind is
higher, with solar flux at 72.  Signals will be weaker than last week
with higher noise.  I expect the QSB to be varied and interesting.  On
Monday I had an advertisement land in my in box. Normally I can
withstand good deals on high tech toys but this one has a strong force.
https://system76.com/desktops/thelio-mega While it is not Tony Stark's
computer it would do very nicely. 128 cores driving four GPUs would keep
me busy writing code. Vacuform the World's Fair?  Piece of cake.

Please join us on (or near):

but before committing to anything, chat up engineers at the company

[Elecraft] OT: Kidde smoke detectors

2020-10-24 Thread Harlan Sherriff via Elecraft
Heads up!

Keeping with the suggested 10 year smoke detector replacement, and wanting to
add a couple more and have them all alarm if one alarms, I bought Kidde
wireless interconnected detectors.
Well, start installation, read the manual. Under Locations To Avoid: Near
amateur radios or other devices known to transmit an RF signal.

So, guess I’ll send these back and get some hardwired interconnected units.

The KPA1500 PF1 and PF2 buttons are programmed from the KPA1500 Utility.
Choose the Configuration tab, and the PF Keys tab.

Enter the macros for PF1 and PF2, then "APPLY" or "OK".

The macros might be something this for PF1:  ^DTRADIO TYPE K3;^XI0;

And this for PF2:^DTFLEX SERIAL;^XI3;

The ^DT text shows on the LCD screen when you hold the PF button to remind
you what it was intended to do.

I am trying to write macros for the PF 1 & 2 keys for the KPA 1500.

My objective is:
Have the PF1 button switch the Input to the K3s with the command ^PF1^XI0;
Have the PF2 button change the input type to serial (for Flex) with the

Neither one is working, where am I going wrong?

I assume that after I have these working with the command tested in the

To elaborate, the ^PF0 and ^PF1 are not valid commands. If you want to
string multiple commands on a button, each command must be followed by a
semicolon with no spaces.

Use the KPA1500 Utility program. In the PF box for PF1 just put ^XI0;
In the PF2 box put ^XI3;

No need to put PF1 and PF2 in front.

[Elecraft] Training the KPA-1500

2020-10-24 Thread Andy Durbin
"How do I know what the tuner has finished tuning for a particular band?"

You can't train for a "band". You have to train (establish a tuning solution
for) each "bin" within each band. For each bin you have to chose whether you
want to chose the upper edge, lower edge, center, or some commonly used
frequency within that bin 's range. Each bin tune needs to handled as a
complete autotune sequence. Lots of manual steps that could be automated
(except for reservations about the legality).

All comments based on experience with KAT500 not KPA1500.

I have read and attempted to follow the instructions in the manual for training
the ATU in the KPA-1500, however I am not sure that I am doing it correctly.
For instance, what mode should I use to produce a signal into the amplifier?
Should I provide the signal continuously while the amplifier is tuning? How do
I know what the tuner has finished tuning for a particular band? It appears
that I have tuned my Cushcraft R7 for both 20 and 17 meters, but would like
someone to give me detailed step by step instructions for the process.
Thank you.

[Elecraft] K3/0 direct connect to K3s within a Jeep (no Internet, no RemoteRIG). Is it feasible?

2020-10-24 Thread PAUL GACEK via Elecraft
I have been operating from within my Jeep and primarily from the passenger
seat. I spent a lot of effort perfecting a KX3/PX3 system where two of these
are mounted on my dash.
https://nomadic.blog/2019/10/22/suitcase-dxpedition-so2r-why-drive-a-boring-bmw-m-series-when-you-can-have-a-ferrari/
Works great but as an SSB guy I’d like a little more oomph and hence a KPA500
enters the picture.

My question is whether its possible/feasible to direct connect a K3s to a K3/0
mini. The use case is to leave the K3s/KPA500 in the back of the Jeep and have
a K3/0 mounted on the dash. I really don’t want to use the RemoteRig boxes and
wondered if its feasible to do this?

[Elecraft] KDVR3 + N1MM Help Needed

2020-10-24 Thread Eric Norris
I'm using macros inside N1MM logger function keys (wicked cool), to play M1
memory from the KDVR3, but no matter how I record my call on the KDVR3,
when played on an N1MM function call, I get something that sounds almost
like a squelch tail. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Thanks!
